- Teacherthanx babe
- Studentthis picture isn't live is it
- Studenthow do you zoom in
- Studentwhat are the little hairs on the bug
- Studentwhats the difference between moths and butterflies?
Bugscope TeamThe differences are that moths typically fly at night and butterflies during the day. Moths can fold their wings down over their back and butterflies usually can't. Moths have filamentous antennae, and butterflies have a club on the end of their antennae.
- Studenthey scott, what is that bug
- StudentWelcome i need help what are we doing

- StudentScott how do you move the scope
- Studento
- Studentwhat are the hairs on it head used for
- Bugscope Teamnow you are zooming in on the mouthparts
- Studentwhat is this
- Studenty does the bug have hairs
Bugscope TeamThe caterpillar has hairs that help it to sense its environment: to smell, feel, and taste. The hairs on some caterpillars also have a defensive function--they rub off and irritated the skin and respiratory systems of potential predators.
- Studenthow do you zoom
- Bugscope Teamone of the longest bugs is a walking stick
- Teacherhi scott
- Studentwow
- Studentthis is awsome
- Bugscope Teamwalking sticks can get to be 15 inches long

- Bugscope Teamenvironment, that is
- Studentwhat kind of mouth parts does it have?
- Studentcan caterpillars be poisonus?
Bugscope TeamSome caterpillars have hairs that contain a fluid that causes rashes and burns if you pick them up. The regular hairs can also cause allergic reactions. There are also some caterpillars that are poisonous, but only if you eat them.
- Studenttravis dont ask for strangers cell phone number
- StudentCOME ON SCOT
- Studentkatie hi its krissy

- StudentScott what am i looken at
- Studentquit asking stupid questions
- Bugscope Teamthe caterpillar has a few very small eyes
- Studentwhy don't butterflies eat your clothes
Bugscope TeamThey don't have the right kind of mouthparts...adult butterflies and moths have a long tube for a mouth...they can't really chew.
- Studentdoes the cattipillar have eyes
Bugscope TeamYes..but we will have to focus on the head to see them.
- Teacherwhy is it so big
- StudentWAT R WE LOOKIN AT????

- Bugscope Teamthe caterpillar may not be poisonous, but often they can ooze chemicals that are distasteful to ants, for example
- Studenthey Cate do catapillars have Hypognathous
Bugscope TeamI can answer that...yes, caterpillars generally have hypognathous mouthparts
- Studenthf nbjdfhgjknghisodhg

- Studentare we supost to do this worksheet?
- Student9726764
- Studenthi lance
- Studenthas a caterpillar killed a person?
Bugscope TeamProbably not directly...maybe in some strange way...like a person slipped on a caterpillar and fell and hurt him or herself in a disastrous way. If you had a bad enough allergic reaction, you might die because of a caterpillar.
- Studentyes
- Bugscope Teamwhere is Hailey?
- Bugscope Teamso between 11-12 inches in their wingspan
- Studentnice striped shirt Corey

- Studenthow many simple eys do they have
- Studentalicia did you read it??????? its toward the bottom
- Studenteveryone cares
- StudentCATE TELL ME ABOUT BUGS?
Bugscope Teambugs, or true bugs, comprise only a small part in the world of insects. Not all insects are bugs. A butterfly is not a bug. Does that help? A stinkbug is a bug
- Studenthay brandon
- Studenthey people
- Studentnot really dj
- Studentyah joey no one cares
- StudentJoey says to Dj, It is Okay
- StudentHow big can they get
- Studenthey brandon
- StudentYesd really
- Studenthow long can mettamorphis take for a butterflie
Bugscope TeamIt depends on temperature, food availability etc. And it depends on the butterfly. Most butterflies will complete metamorphosis in about a month or so. Some take longer, some shorter.
- StudentTELL ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Studentis this the water boatman head?
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mosquito
- Bugscope TeamI just moved us to the water boatman head
- Student?
- Studentwhat is a water boatmen?
Bugscope TeamA waterboatman is a true bug in the family Corixidae...they live in ponds and lakes and they eat little algae and protists.
- 10:22 am
- Student? i am talkin to Scott
- Studentno u arnt
- StudentHey!:) how u doin?
- Bugscope TeamCJ the male mosquitos don't have much to do after they mate, and they don't need to eat much

- Studentyup
- Studentwhat is next?
- Bugscope TeamThey are also extremely cute.
- Bugscope TeamHi Abby Ann Carlee.
- Bugscope TeamMonica Erin what is confusing you?
- Studenthow are you so good at this stuff scott?
- Bugscope TeamIf you cannot see the images from the electron microscope hit F5.
- Studentdoes he have wings? If so, are they able to be seen?
Bugscope TeamWaterboatmen do have wings and they fly fairly regularly. They are often found in temporary ponds, so they need to be able to fly around when their pond dries up.
Bugscope TeamAnd, no we can't really see the wings from this angle. Sorry
- Studenteverything
- StudentDOES IT HAVE WINGS? I KILE CAPITAL LETTERS
Bugscope Teamit does have wings
- Bugscope TeamI have been practicing this for a long time.
- Studentabby and carlee u to are the crazy ones

- Studenthiiiiiiiii
- Bugscope TeamKatie and Kurt you are driving a scanning electron microscope from your classroom. And today we have insects in the microscope that you can image.
- Studentis it a male or female
Bugscope TeamHmmm...it is hard to tell..
- Studentdoes it have compound eyes? We're a bit confused. . .
Bugscope TeamIt does have compound eyes.
- Studenthey whats up
- Studenthow many compound eyes does it have?
Bugscope Teamit has two on the sides of its head
Bugscope TeamIt has two...sorry I didn't answer the question!
- StudentHey ABby ann CArlle how it Goin???!!!!???:)
- Studenthow confusing!
- Studentare you by yourselfs?
- Bugscope TeamKatie and Kurt this is all done from the Beckman Institute building on the University of Illinois campus.
- Studentwhat are we supposed to be doing?
Bugscope TeamYou can ask questions about what we are seeing on the screen...:)
- Studenthi scott
- Studentcoolio i wonder how many eyes this things has if any. Scott, does hav any eyes
- Studenthey scott hows it going?
- Studenthow many simple eyes
Bugscope TeamI am not sure if it has simple eyes...usually insect have three simple eyes....
- StudentWhy is it missing a leg????|
Bugscope TeamWhen insects die, their connective tissue on the inside of the exoskeleton dries up and the legs get brittle...and they break.
- StudentHELP
- 10:27 am
- StudentIs this still a water boatman?
Bugscope Teamyes
- Bugscope TeamHi Broc and Dan!
- Studentno mell
- Bugscope Teamthis is still the water boatman

- Studentscott how are youu????
- Studentidkkkk. cause we saiad soo
- Studentdoes it have simple eyes
- StudentAnnie r u good at science
Bugscope TeamI hope so. I am working on my PhD.
- Bugscope Teamif we go to higher mag on the head we should be able to see the eyes, which are compound eyes, composed of many facets
- Studenthi broc
- StudentHi Annie
- Bugscope Teamthe eyes are streamlined into the head, making them look very smooth
- StudentHiya danner
- Studentdoes a catipillar have coumpound eyes
Bugscope TeamNot really..they have a ring of small bumps...but they aren't really compound eyes like you see in adult insects
- Bugscope TeamAbby Ann Carlee I am doing great, Thank You.
- Studenthi how are u today
- Studentam douing very fibe
- Studentdoing fine
- Studentfine
- Bugscope TeamNow you can see tiny setae (hairs) on the top of the head.
- Studentyour welcome. scott. :)
- StudentWater boatmans live in water correct i figure that's where they get da name
Bugscope TeamYes. They live in ponds, lakes, and standing water. But they can fly.
- StudentHEy SOph ann BRi!!!:) HOws it goin 4 ya??
- Studentheyyy katie sophie ann bri!!!
- Studentscott. are you smart?
- Studenteh.... ok i guess? hheyyyyyy abby an carlee
- Studentany antennae
Bugscope TeamThey have small bristle-like antennae.
- Studenthaa. whats up brriiiii
- Bugscope Teamaccording to wikipedia: "Water boatmen are considered a delicacy to people in many parts of Mexico, where they are harvested and eaten in large numbers. They are also used and exported as pet food. They have also been known to provide endless pleasure for children in Africa where competitions are held between siblings and friends to catch the most water boatmen (in glass bottles) from their local ponds and swimming pools."
- StudentHEY buddies!!! I don't no wat ?'s to ask????!!!!
- Studentparty
- Bugscope TeamSometimes I think I am smart, but you know that is not a good idea.
- Studentwhat type of legs does it have
- Student \m/ \m/ \m/ ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!
- StudentWhat kind of mouthpart do they have?
- StudentWhat is not a good idea scott?
- Studentoh, just trying to figure this out. u?
- Studentwhat about mouth parts
Bugscope TeamThey have small sucking mouthparts, like all "true" bugs. They are opisthognathous (uhhh, I think that is how you spell that--projecting backwards)
- Bugscope Teamthat was the eye. I had moved the microscope so we could try to see the ommatidia, but they are so smooth it is hard to see them
- StudentHey Annie! is this one of ur classes or do u get 2 skip classes?
Bugscope TeamHa ha, I was finished with classes several years ago. Now I am working on writing up my dissertation...which is harder than taking classes (I think!)
- Studentwhat type of antennae
Bugscope TeamThey have setaceous antennae.
- StudentHi mrs. Damery
- 10:32 am
- Bugscope Teamif you think you are smart you are bound to goof up and not feel so smart, Abby Ann Carlee
- Studentdo they have flagellum anntenae
- StudentARE THESE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES?
Bugscope Teamnope
- Studentlegs?
Bugscope Teamthey have natatorial legs...legs modified for swimming!
- StudentOh. Haa. Well you seem pretty smart ann cool mann. Scott:)
- Bugscope TeamMonica Erin the water boatman has very small antennae we do not see now.
- Bugscope TeamThank You.
- Studenthi scott
- Studentthanx scott
- Studentwhich bug is this now?
Bugscope Teamthis is still the water boatman
- StudentYuour welcome. SCOT
- Studentis it dead
Bugscope Teamyes all the insects you see today are dead
- Studenti know
- Studentijkolplokijuhygtfrdesw
- StudentI mean Scott.
- Studentok thanks:)
- Bugscope Teamthis is cool!
- StudentScott how old are you
- StudentSo BRi its just you hhhhhmmmm...............................................:):)
- Bugscope Teamthis is the mosquito
- Studentscott are u in school?
- Bugscope Teamand we can see some of the mouthparts
- Studenthow many wings do mosquitoes hav
Bugscope Teamthey are one of the exceptions. Flies (of which a mosquito is one) have only TWO wings: one pair.
- Bugscope Teamit would be hard to put a live insect in the microscope because we have to pump it to vacuum, so it would take a long time for it to pump to vacuum because it is so juicy, and the insect would die because of the lack of air
- Studenthow many pairs of wings do theyhave
Bugscope Teamthey have one pair
- StudentWhere can you find a waterboatman, SCott???????
- StudentHI Cate!!!!!
- Bugscope TeamI am not in school; I work here, and I think this is a super fun job.
- Studentis this mosquito male or female?
Bugscope Teamthis one is female, it is the kind that will eat your blood
- StudentIN THE WATER?
- Studentwhat type of wings are they
- Bugscope TeamWater boatmen you can find in small ponds, along the sides of lakes, in the summertime.
- Studenti bet it is. do you talk to a lot of people? ann is this all u do scott?
- StudentYour job does not look fun to me. do you get paid Scott??
- Studentclose up
- Studenthow do u tell the difference between male and female mosquitoes
Bugscope TeamThe easiest way to tell them apart is behavioral: male mosquitos do not bite you and they do not buzz around you. Morphologically: male mosquitos have extremely plumose antennae, and female mosquitoes have more flagellate antennae.
- Bugscope Teamsetaceous means they are sort of hairlike, small and slender
- StudentWHY IS IT'S ANTENNAE COMING OUT OF IT'S EYE?
- Studenthary
- Studentewwww
- Studentwhat type of antennae
- Studentthat was phares
- Studentidk
- Studentweeeeeeeeee
- Studentso was that
- Bugscope TeamCJ we can tell usually by how ornate the antennae are. Males often have fancy antenne.
- Studentdane and phares are silly!
- Bugscope Teamantennae sorry
- Studentwat kind of eyes
- Studentscott???
- Studentsetaceos is its antennas
Bugscope TeamWaterboatmen have setaceous antennae...not mosquitoes
- Studentlegs? :)
- Studentdo they have compound eyes
Bugscope Teamthey have 2 compound eyes.
