Title The wonders of the SEM
Insects doesn't matter really
Description This is a simple introduction to the biology class on electron microscopy. I want them to experience the wonder and capability of an electron microscope. Previously, we studied a compound light microscope and discussed how SEM and TEM works but I'd like for them to experience it firsthand. I will be grouping my students into groups of 2 per computer. I have a wide range of students, in terms of ability. I have 15% African American, 5% Asian, 2% Hispanic and the rest are Caucasian. The students will be asked to make observations, come up with questions, and choose one of their questions to design an experiment. Then, they will write a summary of what they learned from the experience. This write-up should reinforce their ideas about scientific method. It will not be a formal nor a very technical write-up because this is freshmen biology course.
