- Bugscope Team just starting setup for today's session

- 9:57am

- Teacher No worries...getting the kids settled. Did you understand the samples?

- Bugscope Team yes thanks for labeling the bags :)
- 10:02am

- 10:14am
- Teacher Did the samples match up correctly?
- Bugscope Team they seem to be perfect
- Bugscope Team perfetto
- Bugscope Team please let us know if you have an preferences for today
- Bugscope Team this is the crime scene evidence
- Teacher Sweet! They are chomping at the bit!
- 10:22am
- Teacher If you will start with the crime scene that would be super. They are filling out evidence collection forms and then a form to sketch a sample of each suspect.
- Teacher I am going to start geting them to the computers...is that ok?
- Bugscope Team yes go right ahead!
- Bugscope Team cool!
- Teacher Do the kids login as 'guest'?
- Bugscope Team they can
- Bugscope Team or Students if that is available
- Bugscope Team it doesn't matter if they are on as guest or student
- Bugscope Team sometimes, for some reason, the Student option is not available
- Teacher I don't see it in the drop down.
- Bugscope Team yeah so Guest, which is presumably there...
- 10:27am
- Teacher We refreshed and the student option appeared. :)
- Bugscope Team hi everybody!
- Student Hello
- Student Hello
- Bugscope Team sweet
- Student Hello Cate! Good Morning
- Student Hello
- Student Hello
- Bugscope Team Hello Everyone!
- Student hello
- Bugscope Team this is the crime scene evidence sample at relatively low magnification
- Bugscope Team these are all live images from the samples that are in the microscope
- Student Is this the pictureof the shoelace
Bugscope Team yes! you can see the way the fabric is woven
- Student whats that stuff that looks like dots
Bugscope Team someone on your side can investigate, take the magnification up, to see what those dots might be
- Student Is that dirt?
Bugscope Team there might be some dirt on there, but most of those specks are pollen grains

- Student oh
- Bugscope Team looks like the perp was walking through a garden or something
- Student Those pollen grains may have gotten into the shoe because The evidence may be from the two jocks, Thugston and Jockette
- Bugscope Team is Jockette a woman?

- Student Yes.
- Student yes she is

- Student He was hiding in a bush, kind of like a garden
Bugscope Team wow that could be helpful

- Student yes she is.

- 10:33am

- Student Inever realized how big pollen was

- Student Wow! 592x magnified!
- Student Is this the pollen up closer in bigger magnification?
- Student Are those strings thread from the shoelace?
- Student IOn the form it says that a woman called a complaint of someone stomping her garden. that mught be the pollen
- Bugscope Team they are still realyl small. You don't get this magnified with standard light microscopes
- Student in the evidence one of the witnesses said her flowers were trampled, so that could be the reason for pollen on the shoelace
- Student so what are thoes things that look like dotes on the pollon.
Bugscope Team maybe you could take the magnification up to see
- Student They're pollen grains

- Student what is that?
- Student is this still the shoelace

- Student What is this?
Bugscope Team the flattened basketballs are pollen grains found on suspect A
- Student really?

- Student Is this like crumbs that fell and landed on the shoelace?

- Student It looks like a rock
- Student oh, this is the pollen grain!
- Student So this is a gumdrop or a basketball
- Student its the pollen
- Student wait, the the big thing in the middle is pollen ?
- Student Oh
- Student so
- Student yes
- Bugscope Team we can see that the pollen grains are inside those two larger pieces of vegetation
- Student so

- Student whats that big wall looking thing.
Bugscope Team the strings are parts of the shoeslace. the big parts are part of the plant that the pollen came from
- Bugscope Team I think those are anthers.
- Student So it's part of a plant?
- Student What are anthers?
- Student What are anthers?
- Student whats an anther?
- 10:38am
- Student so its the plant stuck in the shoelace
- Bugscope Team anthers are the parts that stick up in the middle of the flower and often have lobes on them -- they are full of pollen
- Student Ooh, because whoever's shoelace this is was in the woman's garden, & thats why there is pollen & vegetation on it
- Bugscope Team if you walk through grass even you could get pollen on you
- Student Very fascinating
- Teacher I believe there should be grass pollen &/or seeds on all samples. Remember you are looking for something different that would match the crime scene to one of the suspect samples.
- Bugscope Team your teacher is right
- Bugscope Team there are different pollens on the samples. you have to try to match up what suspect sample seems to match the crime scene evidence
- Student is this part of the shoe lace or is this another piece of pollon because it looks like there is less pollon on it than the shoe lace.
- Student so this explains about the women complaing about her garden, this is the anther of her flowers.
- Student oh makes sence now.
- Student okay, so it doesnt matter what sample it is because they all have pollen because they were all found in the dit?

- Student It looks like there is alot of pollen on this sample

- Bugscope Team this was on suspect b
- Student this shoelace looks smoother than the last
- Bugscope Team they have football shaped pollen grains
- Student Is that normal?
- Bugscope Team it could be, but I would focus more on the kinds of pollen you see
- 10:44am
- Student they must have ran though the bush because they have more pollen
- Student and its football shaped!

- Student yes i beleive so

- Student it looks like hair\
- Student There is alot of pollen.
- Student The pollen on here looks different from suspect a .
- Student do they come in different sizes and shapes
Bugscope Team yes they do! Some are football shaped like here. Some may look more like deflated basketballs. And some may look spikey (which is what ragweed looks like)
- Bugscope Team we've seen pollen like those football-shaped ones before
- Student The pollen is very numerous here
- Student is this suspect b
- Student This looks more oval-Shaped and less pointed tip than suspect b and a
- Student There is a numerous amount of pollen
- Student so does that mean that they were walking on differentplaces/

- Student what plant dfo they come from is it on most plants
- Student What is this?
- Student This looks like a cell?
- Student Is this a peice of pollen?
- Bugscope Team this is a pollen grain trapped in the shoelace
- Student cool
- Bugscope Team pollen comes in different shapes and sizes
- Student Interesting
- Student it looks like a pea in a fork

- Student The pollen from sample A and C look similar
Bugscope Team i think you are right.

- Student Sample B is the only one that is distinctively different from the others.

- Student The woven parts of sample B and the crime scene evidence look similar
- Student what about there color
Bugscope Team we could see the color before we put these samples in the sputter coater and coated them with gold-palladium
- 10:49am

- Student So now we know that it is probably not suspect a.

- Student The shoelace's length is about 2mm, is that correct?
Bugscope Team all of the shoelace samples were closer to 9 or 10 millimeters, but we actually cut some of them smaller so they would fit on the stub

- Student okay, thanks
- Student its fabric
- Student What is that stringy looking stuff?
Bugscope Team those are the fibers of the threads that the shoelace is woven from
- Student oh so do they come in different colors and sizes?
Bugscope Team pollen can be different colors and sizes. We can only tell sizes in this microscope, though, because everything is in black and white
- Student This looks similar to sample B
- Student What are the things that look like is ripping off paper like
- Student This sample looks a lot like sample B
- Student Thank you!
- Teacher We are switching now.
- Student Thanks!
- Student Are the fibers on the shoelace torn ?
Bugscope Team the fibers were cut; if we were to look at the ends, we would see that they have been crushed by a blade, like scissors, and that seems to indicate that they may be some kind of polymer
- Student Thank you have a very nicce day~
Bugscope Team Thank You!
- Teacher 8th Period begins
- 10:54am
- Bugscope Team 8th Period? Goodness, what time did you start school today?
- Teacher They are all here...this is just how they are grouped.
- Bugscope Team super cool!
- Bugscope Team are Thugston and Jockette there too?
- Teacher I can't get suspect A...
- Bugscope Team we can't get it either -- Cate is driving directly there

- Bugscope Team i think it all works now
- Teacher Ok. That looks good. They are ready to sketch now.
- Bugscope Team this, now, is Suspect A sample, high mag
- Student it looks like teeth
Bugscope Team yes like teeth!
- Student Why do the circle things have dents
- 11:00am
- Student is it cells or something?
Bugscope Team these are pollen grains on suspect a's shoelace
- Student dirt or pollen?
- Teacher Remember we are looking at a piece of shoelace. What might you find on your shoes, other than poop?
Bugscope Team bits of food from messy eating?
- Student Dirt?
- Student Are the things that look like blood cells pollen?
Bugscope Team yes they are! pollen comes in different shapes and sizes
- Student Is there alot of pollen in the shoelace?
- Student it looks like corn
- Student At first i thought they were red blood cells.
Bugscope Team they look a lot like red blood cells, which are biconcave discs about 8 to 14 microns in diameter

- Student are we looking in between the fabric?
Bugscope Team there is a piece of the plant these pollen grains are sitting in and then the long stringy things here are the shoelace fabric fibers
- Bugscope Team human red blood cells do not have nuclei, but those of birds do

- Student what is in this?
- Student pollen?
Bugscope Team yes! more pollen!
- Student So for suspect b, the pollen is stuck in the fabric?
- Student why does it look diferent than the last one if they are both the same material?
- Student What are the smaller particles?
Bugscope Team juju and perhaps other types of pollen
- Student what are the pore like things?
- Bugscope Team lily pollen looks a lot like the football-shaped pollen grains we see now
- 11:05am
- Student they look like they are floating

- Student Does that mean that the suspect could have run through some kind plant

- Student corn agian?
- Student looks similar to b
- Student is that hair in the back?
- Student That looks like the pollen we saw in suspect a's sample
- Student the object toward the bottom, What is that?
Bugscope Team there are fibers that make up the threads, and there is one tiny gumdrop-like pollen grain that also resembles a mold spore, and there are football-shaped pollen grains
- Student what are those lines coming off the hair
- Student Im guessing the little sphere looking object is more pollen.
Bugscope Team yes it is pollen
- Bugscope Team pollen can look different on different plants
- Student why does the pollen look totally different under the microscope?
- Student does the lack of pollen symbolize less physical activity than the other suspects?
- Bugscope Team some can be spikey, some can be football shaped, and some can be like deflated basketballs, for instance

- Student it's hair and polin
- Bugscope Team so this pollen looks more like a football
- Student some of the strands have stuff coming off of it like on the far right what is that stuff?
Bugscope Team that was, I believe, smaller bits of the polymer the threads are made of, as thin as spider silk

- Bugscope Team the hair is really fibers on the shoelace
- Student oh, ok

- Student that looks kind of like suspect b
- Student this looks like a mixture of all of the types of pollen we've seen so far
- 11:10am
- Student The little objects on the strands, is that some kind of pollen?
Bugscope Team the oval shaped things are the pollen. There is some dirt and other plant fibers here too
- Student the cells on the pollen is very distinct]
- Student have a great day, Bye.
- Student have a good day bye
- Student It looks like B
- Bugscope Team hope you had fun!
- Bugscope Team oh no where are you going?

- Bugscope Team where's Thugston and Jockette?
- Bugscope Team okay Bye!
- Teacher 5th period

- Bugscope Team so on these different samples you might see different shaped pollen grains
- Student hello
Bugscope Team Hello Group 7E!
- Student hi
- Bugscope Team not all pollen grains will look alike
- Student Hello!
Bugscope Team Hello!
- 11:15am
- Student what are those things in the middle?
- Student The corn shaped things are pollen grains?

- Student So this is A shoe string?
Bugscope Team this is on the A shoestring
- Bugscope Team the deflated balls are the pollens
- Student What type of pollen?
- Bugscope Team they are actually sitting in a little bit of a piece of plant right now, and the plant is sitting on the shoestring
- Student how come the clumps in between are seperated?
Bugscope Team if you took the magnification down lower it might make more sense
- Student Is that dirt in between the fibers?
- Student what is the crevasse to the left of the pollen
- Student Pollens, so does that mean the suspect this is from could have been near plants?
- Student What is that cave looking thing on the left?
Bugscope Team it's part of the anther
- Student Whats an anther?
- Bugscope Team now you can see what we are looking at
- Student i cant even tell what is
- Bugscope Team the strings are the fibers of the shoestring
- Student Ist that still the shoe lace?
- Student what is this rough looking thing
Bugscope Team that is the anther that the pollen grains are sitting on
- Student Is this Shoe String "B"?
Bugscope Team we are on A
- Student What is the fibers around it?
- Bugscope Team an anther is the part of the flower that sticks up in the middle
- Student so the rough looking thing is the pollen right?
- Student what are those speggetti type things?
Bugscope Team those are the fibers the threads are made of
- Teacher Moving to Suspect B

- Student what is in the middle of the strings
Bugscope Team we can see that the two things resting among the fibers are plant material
- Student whoa
- Student these are also pollen right?
- Student what are the dots
- Student is that also pollen?
- Student Are those bug eggs?
Bugscope Team those are pollen grains, but I have seen fruitfly eggs that looked similar to these
- Student Is this hair?
Bugscope Team no it's the fibers that make up the individual threads in the shoelace

- Student Are those little specks by the pollen dust? Or more pollen?
- Student Oh, okay Cate.

- 11:21am
- Student What are the round things?
Bugscope Team those are pollen grains that look like lily pollen
- Student is there dirt in between the shoe strings?
Bugscope Team yes there is some dirt there
- Student is that the shoelace?
- Bugscope Team fruitflies like rotting fruit
- Student In one of the pollen grains, it looks as if one is opening? what is it?
- Student how come some of the pollen grains are open?
- Student Why do the pollen grains look scaley?
- Student Do fruitflies hang out near little bushes or flowers?
Bugscope Team not unless they are in warm areas and the bushes or flowers produce fruit that would attract the fruitflies
- Student how come the pollen is rough looking
Bugscope Team likely it helps the grains maintain their shape and also helps them stick to things
- Student how did the pollen get in the shoe lace?
Bugscope Team someone must have been walking on flowers? or they work at a florist
- Student Where does the pollen come from?
- Student the bush or flower

- Teacher Lily pollen? Can you speculate what type of pollen the other sample was?
Bugscope Team that is not something we have seen before
- Bugscope Team you can get pollen on you from just walking in grass or plants sometimes
- Student what is that
- Student is the shoe lace torn
- Student What pollen is that?
- Student what is that big chunk
- Student is that dried pollen
- Student why is it all tangled up

- Bugscope Team this is a big pole of pollen and plant fibers
- Student Is the shoelace tangled or something?
- Student what is theplant looking stuff
- Student looks like seeds? between the strings
- Bugscope Team pile*

- Bugscope Team this is a clump of fibrous plant material that has pollen in it
- Student does moisture keep the fibres and pollen together?
- Teacher We are now on Suspect C
- Student What type of plant pollen is that?
- Student What's a fibrous plant?

- Student how would pollen collect like that?
- Student What type of plant fibers?
Bugscope Team because the pollen is in it, those fibers may be part of the anthers of whatever kind of flower that is

- 11:26am
- Student this means they were near flowes?
- Student what are those lottle dots bettwen the strings
- Bugscope Team i don't know what plant this came from
- Student what kind of plant is this pollen from
- Bugscope Team the pollens looks like squishy balls
- Student Is the pollen sticky?
- Student so it could be any plant. right?
- Student Indeed

- Student What are anthers?
Bugscope Team anthers are the tip top part of the stamens that produce pollen in a flower
- Student is this crushed?
- Student are these strings that keep the pollen stuck to it
Bugscope Team these are the shoelace fabric fibers

- Bugscope Team you can see how the pollen grains can easily get tangled in it

- Student looks like b
- Student What are the specs?
Bugscope Team the specks are pollen grains
- Student Is this pollen to?

- Student how did they get in between the threads?
- Student Can fibers trap everthing?
Bugscope Team it's easy for something this small to get stuck in it

- Student how would fiber stick to thing easily or would it only react to types of fabric?
- Student it seems like there is more pollen
- Student is this still the same pollen?

- Bugscope Team this is pollen found at the crime scene
- Student It looks like it is trying to come out of the thread
- Student The pollen here looks like the pollen on B. Is it the same type?
- Student do the indents in the pollen help it to stay in one place?
- Student how come some of the pollin has stuff sticking out
- Student can this pollen be felt by our hands
- Student This looks the most like B, hmmmmm...
- Student Is this the same pollen as the one in sample b?
- Student looks like b. Is that the same type of pollen from suspect B?
- Student What type of pollen?
Bugscope Team we do not know for sure what type of pollen this is, but it looks very much, to us, like pollen that comes from lilies
- Bugscope Team we are on the crime scene shoelace. If it looks like B, then maybe that tells you something
- 11:31am
- Student it looks very similar to the lace on "b"
- Student is there an area that would have more pollen than another?
Bugscope Team the anthers will have more pollen than any other flower part
- Student if the srings get riped will the polen be able to get out
- Student Lillies are plants right?
Bugscope Team yes they are plants with cool-looking flowers
- Student will the pollen always get stuck there, or will it get blown away?
Bugscope Team it could get blown away
- Teacher Remember we had numerous pieces of evidence. You must consider the hair samples, the circumstantial evidence at the crime scene, the handwritng samples, and the statement from the librarian. We must also not forget motive.
- Student like whatkinds of flowers
- Student it loks like some ofthe fibers are torn
- Student this was found outside right?
Bugscope Team it seems likely it was found outside
- Student Do some pollen grow?
- Teacher Thank you always Bugscope team! I believe we now have the information we need to solve our crime.
- Student it looks like the fiber is torn
- Student thank you!
- Student thank you so much have a nice day
- Student Thank you!
- Student thank you
- Student thank you so much
- Student Bye and Thank you very much!
- Bugscope Team we have our own ideas now
- Student goodbye
- Student thank you very for your time
- Student Thanks scot for ansering my questions!
- Student Thank You goodbye!
- Bugscope Team it does look torn
- Student Thank you for your awsomeness!
- Student Thank you bugscope team, I would love to do this some other time!
- Student thank you for your help
- Student Goodbye, and thank you!
- Bugscope Team this was fun for us!
- Student Thank you so much, you where very helpful. I think I know who the criminal is now. You're awsome!
- Student us too
- Student it was fun for us to!
- Bugscope Team Good bye, everyone!
- Student Goodbye!
- Student farewell!
- Student Arerevaderci
- Bugscope Team Bye!
