- Student whose chrolly?????
- Student What is the spiracle on the stinkbug?
Bugscope Team that is a breathing hole. kind of like a nostril to us
- Student Hola mi llamo anna
- 2:05pm
- Bugscope Team this is the surface of the stink gland on the stinkbug's thorax
- Student whose chrolly?
- Student hi1
- Bugscope Team this is the mosquito eye scott
- Teacher chrolly is christine and holly, here in the computerlab with you! hola me llamo awesome!
- Student no.

- Student comin out your mouth with ur blah blah blah
- Student this is soooo cool lol
- Student WHAT?
- Student mean. scott yell at her!!!
- Student will someone answer me plzzzz?????
Bugscope Team Cate said -- that is a breathing hole, kind of like a nostril to us.
- Student who is '''''MUSHROOM''''' still no answer
- Bugscope Team spiracles are what insects breathe through
- Student are those eyes?
- Student Are thise two bulges on his head his eyes?
Bugscope Team yes that's right!
- Student me!!! mrs. debe's daughter. in the corner... by the other two girls.
- Student why cant we get the spirial
Bugscope Team hit refresh. but now you should see the stinkbug's head
- Student yay i wuz rite!!!!
- Student are those two buldges his eys?
- Student are the golf ball thingys the eyes
Bugscope Team yes they are!
- Student mushroom??? really????
- Student what makes it so resistent to most pesticides?
- Teacher are they compound eyes?
- Student eeewww
- Student yes
- Bugscope Team down the center of the head, where we looking now, is the proboscis -- the sucking mouthparts
- Student lolololol
- Student ewwwwwww....
- Student roflmfao
- Student iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiyyyyyyyyyyyyyyjyfjdvhjsdhfjSGuhjicgweahbvd
- Student are those compund eyes?
- Student thats gross christine
- Teacher Do stink bugs really have breathing holes in there glutious maximus, aka the butt.
Bugscope Team in a way they do, but all insects do. the gluteus maximus in this case is the abdomen, and there are spiracles on each side of each segment
- 2:10pm
- Student yes they do fly
- Student yes.
- Student do they fly
Bugscope Team they can fly, but they seem generally to fly only for short hops
- Student eeewwww
- Student sometimes.
- Student i dont know.
- Teacher thankyou for the answer scott!
- Student head

- Student what happened to the picture?
- Student uhh awwwwwwwwsssssssssssssssssooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmeeeeeee

- Student what are those leg like things where the eyes should be??
- Student why am i seeing the leafhopper head???

- Student gross. what is that? what are those legs?
- Bugscope Team the eyes were on the sides of the head. There are thousands of ommatidia, or facets, of the compound eye
- Student ROLY POLY!!!!!!
- Bugscope Team this is a roly poly now
- Teacher how many legs does the Rolypoly have?
- Student i caught like 20 of these last sunday
- Student kaos are you there???? SEM??? who are YOU guys?
Bugscope Team they are a couple of logins at the machines that help run bugscope, there's no one at them right now

- Student the legs are for what i mean.

- Student is this a slide show or something????
- Student how many legs are there?
Bugscope Team roly polys have 7 sets of legs. they are not an insect they are crustaceans- like a crab or lobster
- Bugscope Team here is the spiracle- breathing hole
- Student What makes them smell
Bugscope Team stinkbugs have glands that are supposed to be on the thorax between the 2nd and 3rd set of legs on the ventral side -- the underside of the body
- Student what are the dots
- Bugscope Team and those are the stink glands
- Student yours

- Student *are
- Student what are those hairs in it?
Bugscope Team those are like nose hairs- they keep bigger particles out
- Bugscope Team they dom't sneeze though
- Bugscope Team dont*
- 2:16pm
- Student what is the thing hanging down? i think it is for...i dont know. im asking.
Bugscope Team hard to tell; it may be a piece of a plant or some waxy materials

- Student what are those pimple-like things?
- Student what sare those things beside the breathing hole?
Bugscope Team they look kind of like pollen, but they may just be dirt

- Teacher can we see the glands?
Bugscope Team yes!
- Student oh. waxy material or plant. i can see that. thanks!
- Student what are these?

- Student ohhhh cool
- Student aww it went back
Bugscope Team if it is still black try refreshing

- Student why does it have "stems" extending from the "bases"
- Student back, not black

- Student tbut are the flower thingys glands
Bugscope Team that is the surface of the area where the glands are
- Teacher which part gives off the smell?
Bugscope Team there is a thing that looks like a vent, but it is covered by the legs

- Student can we see the vents? or is it to small?
- Student where are the glands???????????????????
- Student what are the stringy things that are between the glands???
Bugscope Team those are softer areas of the exoskeleton that can expand out if needed. They are wrinkled right now
- Student where are dey

- 2:21pm

- Student woahhhhhhhhh
- Student they multiplying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Student whats that crusty stuff on the glands?
Bugscope Team those are things that don't belong- like dust or dirt most likely
- Student are the glands where the chemicals are stored??
- Student does the lacewing claw pich you?
Bugscope Team they are very small, it probably wouldn't hurt very much
- Bugscope Team stinkbugs are said not to like the smell they produce any more than any other insect or animal
- Student oh, thnx cate!
- Teacher how long have stinkbugs existed?
Bugscope Team they have only been in the US since the late 90's
- Bugscope Team so stinkbugs have absorbent material that sucks up the smell so they don't have to smell it
- Student can someone answer my qestion please???
- Student *question
- Student someone PLEASE answer me
Bugscope Team sorry we missed your question, Anna
- Student do stinkbugs fart??
- Student is this where the chemicals are stored?
Bugscope Team this is thought to be where the stink bug soaks up the stink to keep it away from itself. The stink bug doesnt like its own smell.
- Teacher what type of plants are stink bugs attracted to?
- Student what are the strings connecting each gland??
Bugscope Team we don't know, but we can see that it is wrinkled like a deflated balloon, so this may be the place where the absorption of the stink goes on -- as Cate just beat me to saying...

- Student What are stinkbugs attracted to?
- Bugscope Team in the upper right you see it looks like there is some substance over them, that is probably the stuff it oozes
- 2:26pm
- Student why do we find stinkbugs in our homes? to they like the heat, or humidity?
- Student *do

- Student ?
- Student forgot the questionmark... srry.
- Student What are stinkbugs attracted to?
- Student how longs is the stinkbugs lifespan
Bugscope Team they live for around a year
- Student do stinkbugs have predators?
- Bugscope Team some stinkbugs like other bugs and caterpillars
- Student can we look at the proboscis?
- Student can someone answer my question plz?????????
- Student what do stinkbugs eat for food? insects or plants or...
Bugscope Team they like plants- they are a considered a pest
Bugscope Team there are a couple species that do prey on other insects like caterpillars, and these are thought to be the good guys
- Student can we please see a close-up of the proboscis?
- Student Are there any known predators from Asia that also live in America?
Bugscope Team predators of the stinkbug?
- Student how long do they liiiiivveee
- 2:31pm
- Student how long do they live for?
Bugscope Team they live usually a few months, maybe as many as 7, but it depends. some can live for a few years, depending also on where they live
- Student what is tht clump of glands in the top left corner?
- Student where would they go to live longer???

- Student Where would they live longer?????
Bugscope Team in the Tropics where there is no real winter

- Student what are those legs that are where the eyes should be?
Bugscope Team those are antenna!
Bugscope Team the antennae actually are curling around where the eyes are
- Student why do they have leg hair?
Bugscope Team they have that hair to help them sense/feel what is going on around it in it's environment. The hairs help them feel like how our skin can feel things
- Student and if you want me to repeat it :Are there any known predators from Asia that also live in America?
Bugscope Team the asian ladybug would be a big one
Bugscope Team there are parasitic wasps that attack the brown marmorated stinkbug but they live in Asia, and there is discussion of whether those wasps should be brought over -- but you do not always know what the consequences of something like that will be.
- Student how did they get here?
Bugscope Team the stinkbugs? they could have arrived on a fruit shipment, or on plants imported to the US
- Student *!
- Student what is the fur on the legs???
Bugscope Team those are little spines or setae that are often mechano- or touch - sensory
- Student What is their weakness???
- 2:37pm
- Teacher what types of plants are stink bugs attracted to?
Bugscope Team I get the idea that they are not too particular but like typical garden plants
- Student what is their weakness
Bugscope Team well one weakness could be parasitic wasps that will sting them and lay their eggs in their bodies
- Student or a milllepeed
- Student can a centipeed be shown peasle
Bugscope Team TYTY we do not have any centipedes in the 'scope today -- I am sorry

- Student why do they lay eggs in the bodies(of the stinkbugs)? is it a "nursery" sort of?
- Student its ok
- Student are those all pupils?
Bugscope Team they dont have eyes like we do. They have compound eyes that are made up of many facets, which each act like one of our eyes. And with the mosquito eye there are even smaller parts to the facets
- Student If we brought some Asian ladybugs to control the stinkbugs how would they effect the envirment
Bugscope Team ladybugs don't go after stink bugs, I don't think. They are too big for them. Ladybugs meal of choice are aphids. if they were to eat stink bugs, then I believe there would be an even bigger ladybug population and maybe a non-existent stink bug one
Bugscope Team Cate is not too happy about those Asian ladybugs as it is.
- Student your face
- Student wow that's impressive. does that mean mosquito can see things humans cant?
- Student previously you said that the asian lady bug was a predator....
- Bugscope Team praying mantises, assassin bugs, flickers (birds like woodpeckers), and ants will also attack and feed on stinkbugs
- 2:42pm
- Student what do those eyes see in all those facets
Bugscope Team well mosquitos can see infrared, but other insects will see light like we do, or only certain lightwaves
Bugscope Team those are individual sensors in a single ommatidium, so they help collect just one image
- Student t-man your buttttttttt!!!!
- Student are all those eyes facets
- Teacher can we look at the stinkbug proboscis please?
- Student do stinkbugs and most insects have organs somewhat similar to ours?? like kidneys and hearts?
Bugscope Team they have organs that are different from ours but serve similar purposes. the Malpighian tubules might be like kidneys, and the hearts are quite different -- they have an open circulatory system. no veins and arteries
- Student weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

- Student my aunt found several stinkbugs in her house and her house is normally cold. i am unsure why they were atracted to her house and not another or something. or if they didnt come at all.
Bugscope Team most likely, if they are anything like the ladybugs that come in my house, they like houses that have little openings or cracks that they can get into. Some other houses don't have such easy openings
- Student if we got all of those things would stingbugs possible become exstinct, or endangered?
Bugscope Team no likely since we have all those things here in the US
Bugscope Team if an area that had a higher population of stunk bugs didn't have one of those things, then maybe one of the animals could be imported and help take care of the stink bugs
- 2:47pm
- Student we would like that. kayla is mushroom.
- Student it went blank
Bugscope Team hit refresh
- Teacher can we look at the stinkbug proboscis please?
- Student why does it look like a horse's hoof? and if u look closely above the two things at the bottom if you go a little higher u can kind of see things that look like scales? what are those?

- 2:53pm
- Student um what are those things in the background?
Bugscope Team right now this is a little foot pad on a leafhopper, in the background there were some hairs on the leg and maybe some crusty stuff

- Teacher can we look at the stinkbug proboscis please?

- Student what is the proboscis used for
- Bugscope Team this is the piercing part of the proboscis
- Student what is the proboscis used for?
Bugscope Team they are used to pierce either plants or insects to drink the juices
- Student what is the hair up close? is it just in the way?
Bugscope Team yeah it's just in the way- most likely from a leg
- Student what is the stuff that looks like it "leaked" out?
- 2:58pm
- Student where is the proboscis located
Bugscope Team it comes out of the head, and it is long, so it is stored against the thorax when it is not being poked into a branch or leaf or stem or another insect
- Student where is the proboscis located?
Bugscope Team it is a mouthpart, and it originates at the head
- Student what is the stuff that looked like it "leaked" out?
Bugscope Team it's probably plant sap
- Student what is it piercing in the picture??
Bugscope Team it's not piercing anything right now. There is some stuff around it- some sort of dried liquid, maybe plant sap
- Student can we look at the lacewing claw
Bugscope Team Chrolly should be able to drive, or click, to reach it. Please let us know if for some reason that is not working.
- Student oh. i though it was juices that came back out.
- Bugscope Team there are parasitic wasps for every kind of insect, and often for different life stages of insects as well
- Student do the parasitic wasps also sting people/
Bugscope Team they would likely not care about people -- usually they are specific to a certain kind of insect

- Teacher what are we doing to control the stinkbug problem?
Bugscope Team presently they are discussing importing parasitic wasps that attack the brown marmorated stinkbugs; that would kill them
Bugscope Team but then there would be an increase in population to parasitic wasps :)
- Bugscope Team parasitic wasps are often very small, like gnats; they are generally not large like some wasps you would think of

- 3:03pm
- Student what are those things that look like balls?? are those the compound eyes?
Bugscope Team the brochosomes on the leafhopper are nanoparticles
- Teacher that thing looks like the face of a baby bird!
- Student from a distance it looks cute. like a baby.
Bugscope Team and then when you get close it is a scary baby
- Student what are those hair like things?

- Student and what are brochosomes?
- Student what are nanoparticles??
Bugscope Team they are little particles in the nano-scale. The brochosomes are something that only leafhoppers produce
- Teacher Dear Cate and Scott, We enjoyed our session immensely, unfortunately we have to catch the bus. Thank you so much, The MAMS Science and Environmental Clubs
