- 10:29am
- Teacher I am logging computers on now for students to use during the session. We are so excited to partake in the project!

- Bugscope Team Cool! Welcome to Bugscope!
- Bugscope Team we're making the presets

- Bugscope Team This is Scot. Scot = Kaos right now
- Bugscope Team Cate is on the SEM, making the presets

- 10:34am
- Teacher I will be bring in the first class around 11:50 ... I have five computers up and I think we'll have some parents joining in as well as guests.

- Teacher Welcome Mrs. P ... students are still at recess, but we will be getting started soon.

- Guest Great
- Guest Can't wait
- 10:40am

- Guest hi

- 10:45am
- Guest hello

- Bugscope Team Hello! Welcome to Bugscope!
- Bugscope Team We are remaking some of the presets.
- Guest hiiii!!!

- Bugscope Team we had a glitch in which they were not moving to the saved position on the 'scope
- Guest hi
- Guest HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Team so we may have to 'drive' the 'scope for you
- Guest lol
- Guest Great
- Guest WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- Guest Sophie waz here
- Guest LOL
- Guest HAPPY!

- Guest wazup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Guest lol
- Teacher As you can see we are here and ready to go

- Guest can u show us a stimk bug
- Guest stink srry

- Guest what'
- Bugscope Team d'oh cannot spell
- Guest s the name of the huge bug
- Guest cool 8-)
- Guest sorry
- Bugscope Team There are two nice ones you sent us.

- Bugscope Team this is the center of the proboscis
- Guest when will it be ready?
- Bugscope Team and now you can see the head
- Guest This is cool
- Bugscope Team the eyes are slightly hidden under the legs
- 10:51am
- Guest ghghgh

- Bugscope Team these are floret-shaped setae on the side of the head

- Guest do you cut the big bug in half?
Bugscope Team no we just mount them on a stub, usually on the dorsal side, so the ventral side shows
- Teacher Which specimen is this?
Bugscope Team this is the sintkbug, one of them
- Bugscope Team heh stinkbug!
- Guest what is the name of the big bug
- Bugscope Team that was the stink gland
- Guest can we see the antennae?

- Bugscope Team we will be able to go back later -- Cate wants to try to re-do the presets
- Guest ours has LAG
- Bugscope Team oh the big bug, sorry -- that is a male Dobsonfly

- Guest oh that is super cool

- Teacher What would this gland do?
Bugscope Team if you pester a stinkbug it produces a chemical that stings and also can burn your skin
- Guest What is a Dobsonfly?
- Guest wow what i sdat
- Bugscope Team this is a super tiny beetle

- Guest what is that
- Guest DOHNUTS
- Bugscope Team and now we are looking at the compound eye facets -- the ommatida -- of the mosquito

- Guest is that the antenae
- 10:56am
- Guest cool
- Guest that look sharp
- Bugscope Team we're making it so that your teacher will be able to select those places we're going by so quickly, and actually take the time to look at them
- Guest what is that
- Bugscope Team this is the other stinkbug

- Guest Can you tell us the pictures that you post?
- Bugscope Team its eyes are much easier to see
- Teacher So this was the very small insect we sent???
Bugscope Team the very small insect was the silverfish
- Guest r screen is messedc up
- Guest those r big eyes
- Bugscope Team a very nice-looking silverfish
- Guest wow
- Bugscope Team silverfish have scales, like moths and butterflies and mosquitoes
- Guest what is this part?
- Guest spikey???

- Guest is that the skin?
- Bugscope Team sorry we are moving so quickly just now
- Guest wow is that the head?
Bugscope Team this now is the wasp's antenna

- Guest it looks like hair
Bugscope Team they are called 'setae,' but yes they look just like hair
- Guest yah it does look liker hair
- Guest are thoes sharp
Bugscope Team they are sharp but flexible, mostly

- Guest whoa whats that?
Bugscope Team wasp!
- Guest THAT LOOKED COOL
- Guest is that the face?
Bugscope Team yes that was the face of the wasp
- Guest Thats probably the coolest
- Guest those look like tusks
- Bugscope Team Mrs Jones you may drive now.
- Guest what is it
- Guest cool
- Guest what is that part?

- Guest drive what?
- Guest can we change
- Guest wow

- Teacher A question about the eye ... if it's a compound eye how many "eyes" are there usually?
Bugscope Team that depends on how much it relies on its sight
Bugscope Team it really depends -- there may be 5000 facets in the eye of a large wasp, but 10 or 12 in some ants
- Guest what it that?
- Guest woah BIG!
- Guest that was a face of a wasp?
Bugscope Team yes it was!
- Guest magniy it more
- Guest is that the wasps claw?
- Guest what is inside the claw?
- 11:01am
- Guest i don
- Guest i think this is thw wasps claw
- Bugscope Team Mrs Jones now has the ability to drive the 'scope, so she should be able to change the mag, select from the presets on the left, etc.
- Guest i knew it!!
- Guest awesome
- Teacher Can you tell us what specimen this is?
Bugscope Team this is the wasp's claw

- Bugscope Team if you take the mag down you can see more of the body

- Guest is there a wasp?
- Guest can we see the stinger?

- Guest what bug is that from

- Guest looks like it
- Bugscope Team the folded thing between the claws is what helps the wasp cling to surfaces

- Guest thats creepy
- Guest weird wasp!
- Guest yea i wanna see stinger
Bugscope Team the abdomen was broken off, I am sorry. But the stinger was not visible in this case
- Guest that's so gross
- Guest okay, thats creepy
- Guest it looks like its smiling
- Guest awww
- Guest looks like it is smileing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
- Guest yeah right
- Guest is that hair on it?
Bugscope Team the things that look like hair are called 'setae,' and they are sensory

- Guest Can we see the wing?
- Bugscope Team this is a parasitic wasp
- Guest what are those doughnut things
- Guest wow
- Bugscope Team some setae are chemosensory, some are mechanosensory, and some are thermosensory
- Guest that looks cool
- Guest cool
- Guest can we see a close up of the wings?
- Bugscope Team so smell or taste, touch or wind, and hot/cold sensing
- Bugscope Team the wasp is sitting on carbon tape, which appears to have little holes in it
- Guest what does that mean?
- Guest lives on something
- Guest what does parasitic mean?
Bugscope Team it lays eggs in other insects, like caterpillars. Then the eggs hatch and eat their host
- Bugscope Team we had an entomologist here a couple of weeks ago who studied parasitic wasps
- Guest *does it
- Bugscope Team they don't do it to humans

- Guest So does this live on something

- Guest doesit bite?
Bugscope Team it can with it's mandibles, but they are very tiny, we wouldn't feel much pain, if any
- Bugscope Team the entomologist told us that there is a parasitic wasp for nearly every insect
- 11:06am

- Guest where is the stinger/
Bugscope Team the stinger was inside the abdomen, and you could not see it -- I checked this morning, early
- Guest what is the spot?
- Guest gross
- Bugscope Team Mrs Jones you should be able to select a new preset, from the choices on the left screen
- Bugscope Team when you wish
- Guest how did it get in there

- Guest is that a bug?
- Guest or a wart
- Guest tht is such a cool wing
Bugscope Team yes they are. They usually have little hooks, called hamuli, that hook the fore- and hindwings together, but today I couldn't find them
- Bugscope Team the presets are areas we have found for you, but when you click on the preset the 'scope really does drive to that place
- Guest it looks ripped
- Guest ( the spot in the middle of the wing)
Bugscope Team it was where a piece of dirt was sitting, and then got blown away at some point
- Guest hmmm very cool
- Guest oh gross
- Guest r computer is super slow

- Guest Sorry that was miles
- Teacher The wing looks transparent ... do you know what the dark spot is?
Bugscope Team the electrons pass through very thin things like that. usually we cannot see through anything with this microscope
- Guest so the wing is transparent?
Bugscope Team they are, but the electrons don't see that. They bounce right off giving us a topographical view
- Guest What is that
Bugscope Team this is the head of the tiny insect you sent. I thought at first it was a baby roach, but it is a silverfish
- Guest that looks like a crab or something
- Bugscope Team here's a silverfish, often found in bathrooms
- Guest Danielle and Patrick are fighting
- Guest wow what is this?
- Guest wow what is this?
- Guest What's a silverfish
- Guest cool silver fish
- Guest never mind
- 11:11am

- Teacher The students want to know what the hole is ... is this part of the antennae
Bugscope Team yeah that's where an antenna broke off. Both of them are broken. Limbs and antennae can fall off easily when insects die and dry out
- Guest looks like a hairy frog
Bugscope Team yeah like a jim henson creation
- Guest cool
- Guest ewwwwww
- Guest Whats on it?
- Bugscope Team this is the eye of the mosquito. It's a male mosquito
- Bugscope Team it doesn't normally have all those wormy things on it. I think that happened sometime during the drying process we put it through
- Guest looks like mildew

- Guest what do u think happend?
- Bugscope Team but if you look beyond the white stuff, you will see even smaller bumps, and those are like the cones in eyes
- Guest it looks 2 d
- Guest is it different from a female mosquite eye?
Bugscope Team no, but their mouthparts and antennae are different
Bugscope Team males have more showy looking antennae
- Guest This is Miles. He said it looks like ravioli
- Guest What is that giant bump
Bugscope Team the bump is the dobsonfly eye
- Bugscope Team the hole is another broken antenna
- Bugscope Team and the part going off to the right is where the mandible is

- Guest Ewww
- Guest How'd it get in thier
- Guest does the female have bigger inteni?
Bugscope Team for mosquitos? No not necessarily, they just don't have the extra fronds that the males have
- Guest is it mold?
- Guest wow this is MOLD
Bugscope Team yes it is, found in the mouth of a beetle
- Guest how does the mold develope?
- Guest i think the bumps are the mold...
- Guest how fast does the mold grow? Is it dangerous to the insect[
- Guest what are the bumps?
Bugscope Team I'm not sure what the small bumps are for, but the segments are so that the mold and break off and grow somewhere else. That's why mold is so pesky
- 11:16am
- Teacher Would the insect get the mold from eating food?
Bugscope Team it probably happened after it died. Mold likes damp, decaying things
- Guest ooooooh okay

- Guest What is that wierd thing

- Guest a seedbug?
- Guest What bug is this
Bugscope Team a little beetle. I think it is some sort of seedbug
Bugscope Team a leaf beetle would be more accurate
- Guest Huh
- Guest it looks cute!
- Guest Is this the silverfish
- Guest looks like a WEIRD frog
- Guest how does the mold form in the mouth?
Bugscope Team all the juicy stuff is inside the insect
- Guest umm... not sure it looks cute
- Guest WHo wrote thats
- Guest gross!
- Guest what is that?????????????
Bugscope Team this is the silverfish again. If this happened while trying to click on another preset, then that preset is broken- sorry
- Guest is this the best microscope that you have in your lab?

- Guest it is nit cute miranda

- Guest How is that cute????????????//
- Bugscope Team let us know if we need to drive the microscope -- it looks like it is stuck again
Bugscope Team no i just hadnt gotten rid of all the broken ones
- Guest it looks scaly
- Guest Why is it called a sliver fish?
Bugscope Team light reflects silver off their scales, giving them a silver appearance
- Guest is it frowning?
- Guest cool
- Guest Was that a joke Miranda
- Bugscope Team they like to appear in bathrooms
- Guest do*

- Guest doi bugs have a big enough brain to have emotion?
Bugscope Team I'm not sure. I don't think they can really show emotion, but some people keep the bigger insects as pets, like certain stag beetles
- Guest oh

- Teacher doesn't appear that the moth scale and it's not coming up
- Guest Is it a bug or some other animal
- Guest is that hair
Bugscope Team the things that look like hair are setae, which insects and comparable arthropods use to help sense their environment
- 11:21am
- Guest What order is this
Bugscope Team silverfish belong to the order thysanura
- Guest oh
- Guest how many insects are in your lab?
Bugscope Team we have a few hundred, probably. they get depleted over the winter
- Guest Bye
- Guest anini
- Guest thanks, my class is leaving now!
- Teacher Be back in a few minutes
- Bugscope Team ok great!
- Bugscope Team Thank You!

- Guest Thank You
- Guest thank you so much for showing us therse great pictures. Have a great afternoon! THANK YOU

- Guest some people do not like hurting animals because they think they have emtion
Bugscope Team scott used to have some fish as pets and thought they had emotion, so who knows
Bugscope Team some fish are smarter than dogs. my fish were for sure smarter than Afgans.
- Guest haha

- Guest I loved this
- Bugscope Team this is the eye and the base of the antenna of the Dobsonfly
- Guest haha
- Guest thanks!!!
- Bugscope Team the Dobsonfly is a male, and we can tell because it has those huge mandibles

- Bugscope Team Thank You!

- Bugscope Team Dobsonflies spend most of their lives in another form --- as hellgrammites, which live underwater

- Bugscope Team now we can see three ocelli -- simple eyes -- on the top of the Dobsonfly's head.

- Bugscope Team they are the larvae form

- Bugscope Team here we see the other compound eye

- 11:26am

- Bugscope Team this is a tiny piece of the wing of the Dobsonfly

- Teacher Hello from Mrs . Russell's class we are excited to join in ...

- Bugscope Team ok you can take over then

- Bugscope Team I just selected a preset from the left of the silverfish scales
- 11:32am

- Teacher Thanks, we're going to look at the mosquito claw

- Guest can we se the bi
- Guest What r the small points???
Bugscope Team this is the mosquito claw. It appears to have small spines coming off from the main claw parts, like antlers
- Guest R those hairs?
Bugscope Team yes that's right! Insects are covered in them. We call them setae (pronounced see-tee). They allow the insect to do many things like feel or taste or sense temperature changes.

- Teacher Did you do anything with the large "beetle" that we sent? Are there any presets of that organism?
Bugscope Team I'm not sure, we do have 2 stink bugs on here, a rather large dobsonfly, silverfish that I think all came from you. Maybe if scot gets back on, he'll say what he did with the beetle
- Bugscope Team scot made the sample
- Guest how and what does it eat?
- Guest Are the round cups the eyes?

- Guest what does the mosquito use its claws for?
Bugscope Team insects have claws to grab on things, like for support or to hold on to their meals
- Guest where are the eyes? are they those little cylinders
- Guest are those slalks on the head eye sockets
Bugscope Team those are where the antennae broke off. Here is another hole from a broken antenna
- 11:37am

- Guest OMG! what is that tube?
Bugscope Team that is where the antenna used to be, but it broke off sometime after it died
- Guest does it have a pupil?
- Guest What are those hair things?
- Bugscope Team this is a mosquito compound eye. the wormy things aren't supposed to be there. They happened sometime during the drying process we put the mosquito through
- Guest what are the white thing hanging of it
- Bugscope Team if you look beyond the white things you can see the cones on the facets
- Guest Is that dirt?
Bugscope Team it might be wax. Not sure where it came from though
- Guest does the bug see one image through the compound eye, or like one million tiny pictures?
Bugscope Team they are thought to see many tiny parts of images that they put together like a jigsaw puzzle in their brain. Flying insects have such big eyes that they can see almost 360 degrees around themselves

- Guest Are these compound eyes?
Bugscope Team yes those were the individual facets of a compound eye
- Guest cool!
- Guest what bug is this claw from??
- Guest about how big is that?
Bugscope Team the whole compound eye was maybe around a millimeter big
- Guest what is the bent thing inside the two claws

- Bugscope Team here are some other claws
- Guest are those claws used to hook onto something?
- Teacher Can the claws be used as weapons against other insects?
- Guest What are the hairs used for?
- Guest more hairZ!!!!!
Bugscope Team that's right! They have pretty much a suit of armor on, and without those hairs they wouldn't know what's going on around it. But those hairs are connected to nerves beneath the exoskeleton, giving them a similar sensation to what we get with our skin
- Teacher What is the upside "u" shaped material between the claw
- 11:42am
- Guest are the hairs the same as the hair on humans?
Bugscope Team our hairs aren't the same. Ours were originally to keep us warm. Their hairs are similar to our skin though
- Guest R those things hairs r more stingers?
- Guest what is the claw for?
Bugscope Team to grab onto things
- Guest What is the claw holding??
- Guest do you have any qwue
- Guest what is the bent thing inside the two claws
Bugscope Team that is a pad, kind of like what dogs and cats have

- Guest can the claws hurt humans??
Bugscope Team if it was from a big enough insect they could pinch us hard enough, but those claws were very tiny- we wouldnt feel them
- Guest What is the stink bug's main defense??
Bugscope Team it's stink! And it doesn't even like it's own stink so it has special areas to soak up the smell from it
- Guest is that a nose?
- Guest what are the circles/holes there for?
Bugscope Team those are where special hairs are
- Guest is the large thing in the center a proposis
Bugscope Team yes that's right!
- Guest do you have any queen bees?
Bugscope Team no sorry, but bees are fun to look at, especially honey bees

- Guest does dat have a stinger?
Bugscope Team no but the proboscis is used to jab into plants or other insects to drink the liquids from them. The stink bug is a plant eater

- Guest Are those craters in the wings?
Bugscope Team no, the wings are hiding under it's elytra on its back (like a ladybug). The little pits do have hairs that look similar to mini wings
- Guest Is that a tooth or a claw?
Bugscope Team this is the tip of the dobsonfly mandible. Only the males have such large mandibles
- Guest do you have scorpions or trantulas?
Bugscope Team no sorry
- 11:47am

- Guest what are the holes in the picture
Bugscope Team the samples are all sitting on carbon tape, which have little holes in it. Maybe you were talking about that?
- Guest how does the stinkbug excrete the smell??
Bugscope Team the smell comes from glands on the sides of the stinkbug
- Guest Is dat used 2 attack or defend?
Bugscope Team defend. it doesn't attack other insects
- Guest is a silverfish related to a fish
Bugscope Team no, it's called that because it kind of wiggles around when it moves (grosses me out when i find one). They are called silver because light reflects off their scales with a silver color
- Guest Is a silverfish related to a goldfish
Bugscope Team nope
- Guest do you have any bombbader bettles?
Bugscope Team no what kind of beetle is that
- Guest why do the scales have ridges

- Guest what are those little lines on the scales
Bugscope Team those give the scales structure and also give the scales color for when the light refracts off them
- Guest did the mold form while the bug was alive or did it form after the bug died?
Bugscope Team it forms most likely after it died. Mold likes moist decaying areas
- Guest do you have scorpions or trantulas?
- Guest Is the silverfish as big as a pencil sharpener
- Guest how long dose the silverfish live
Bugscope Team they live between 2-8 years
- Bugscope Team scales can also act as a defense mechanism. Say a silverfish or some moth got caught in a web, it can shake some loose and get away
- Guest what type of mold is it
- Guest is that mold?
- Guest what are the circles?
Bugscope Team those are the individual mold spores. They form in strands and then can break away and make more in other areas
- Guest is that pollenjik
Bugscope Team no but pollen is similar in size
- 11:53am
- Guest what are the circles for??

- Guest whats that blob on the right hand side?
Bugscope Team looks like a piece of dirt or dust

- Guest what insect is this on
Bugscope Team this is a small beetle, most likely a leaf beetle

- Guest do you have any bombader beetles
Bugscope Team no but they don't sound like a fun beetle to come in contact with
- Guest gross
- Guest What r da lines?
Bugscope Team those are the main ridges of the wing to give it support
- Guest Are those holes??
Bugscope Team yes, areas where the wing tore
- Guest It looks like a leaf
- Guest ., are the little dimmples on the wing cells
Bugscope Team no, the wing is very bumpy. It is also made of chitin- the same stuff our fingernails are made of

- Teacher Can you tell us what a spiracle is?
Bugscope Team it is a breathing hole. They are connected to a trachea that runs along the body, supplying the body with oxygen. Kind of like our nostrils
- Guest ? is the tube?
- Guest Y does it look like a leaf?
Bugscope Team they are very thin, and to us they are frail.
- Guest What are the pionting things in the hole??
- Guest what happens if those holes get clgged
- Guest it doesn't look like a leaf!
- Teacher Very cool ... looks like there are hair to filter foreign material
Bugscope Team yes that's right!
- Guest how long does the silverfish live
- Guest What are the dots?
Bugscope Team those are oils that dried on the exoskeleton. Maybe stink bug juices
- 11:58am
- Guest wow this is amazing i never thought a bug could be so complex
Bugscope Team some bugs like roaches aren't very complex. They haven't changed since prehistoric times!
- Guest what is dat
- Guest wow...
- Guest re those goose bumps
- Guest what happens if the hole gets clogged
Bugscope Team it wouldn't be able to breath well out of it, but they have a hole in each segment of their abdomen. You can kind of see another one in the lower right
Bugscope Team they have a hole on each side,. in each segment
- Guest 'what bug is this?
- Guest what are mosquitos' claws used for?
Bugscope Team to grab onto things like our skin when it is about to bite us
- Guest it looks like armor

- Guest what r those lines???????????
Bugscope Team those are the segments in the stink bug. They have multiple segments so they can bend a little
- Guest Yaaaay
- Bugscope Team these are ocelli on the dobsonfly. They are simple eyes that are used to help it navigate using light
- Teacher Can you explain what ocelli are?\
Bugscope Team they can triangulate the position of the sun to help it navigate where it needs to go, which is why there are 3 of them
- Guest r those things wrinkles?
- Guest Are those wrinkles?
Bugscope Team those are patterns in the exoskeleton. Not sure what their purpose is
- Guest What are those dome thingys
Bugscope Team those domes are the ocelli- simple eyes
- 12:03pm
- Guest R those things wrinkles?
Bugscope Team they are called crenelations. On some insects a certain way they are positioned will allow them to seem shiny. Don't know what these do
- Guest This was so much fun! Thankyou so much Cate! Hope kids next year will love as much as this year!
- Guest is there life just trying to stay alive?
- Bugscope Team ants have them, which is why some black ants look kind of shiny
- Teacher Thank you for the great answers!
- Guest I LOVE HOW U R SO SMART!!!
- Guest thanks i loved it
- Guest THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Guest why do they hav bumps
Bugscope Team the ocelli are mainly found on flying insects like fruit flies
- Guest thanks!
- Guest T
- Bugscope Team thanks, hope you all had fun
- Bugscope Team thanks for using bugscope today!
- Guest YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME111
- Guest THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Guest thank you for making me want to do this again!!!
- Guest YO PEACE OUT HOME DOG
- Guest THANK U FOR ALL THE INFORMATION U GAVE ME!!!!!!!!!
- Guest THANK YOU sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssSooooooooooooooooooooooooo MUCH
- Guest u rox i like the yankees
- Guest Good Bye Cate! Thankyou so much for giving us great answers! We had so much fun!
- Guest I LOVE U
- Guest thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!thanks
- Teacher The next class will start around 1:25 ... thanks for doing this three times in a row. Each class is soooo energized!
- 12:20pm

- Bugscope Team just checking but is that 1:25 your times?

- Teacher give us about 5 minutes and we'll be back with you

- Bugscope Team ok I'll be here

- 12:25pm

- Guest WHAT ARE THE HORNS ON THAT STICK THINGGY
Bugscope Team this is the dobsonfly claw. the horns are the claw parts and the stick is the leg
- Teacher Hi everyone, we're back. This is Mrs. Jones' class.
- Guest what is that beak-like thing?

- Guest they look like a mustache
Bugscope Team yeah they kind of do. Claws are used to grab onto other things. Like food or just to help keep the insect stable
- 12:30pm
- Bugscope Team this is a silverfish head. The Stalks at the top of the head are where the antennae fell off
- Guest Is that it's face??
- Guest why is it called a silver fish?
- Guest Those holes look like eyes!

- Guest do they grow back
Bugscope Team if the insect has another molt it can regrow lost limbs. The silverfish lives for up to 8 years, so the longer an insect lives the more molts it probably gets.
- Bugscope Team Something that has a short adult life like the dobsonfly wouldn't have another molt
- Guest what are those pore like things?
- Guest interesting where are its eyes?
Bugscope Team if it had eyes they would have been on the very sides of the head. Almost towards the back. Some insects don't have eyes because they like dark places anyway

- Guest Do you know how many eyes are in the compound eye?
Bugscope Team it depends on how big the insect is. Something like the dobsonfly could have thousands of facets in the compound eye
- Teacher The exoskeleton looks like it has dimples on it ... is the surface rough?

- Guest IT has a BIG HOLE!
- Bugscope Team what we see here is part of the antenna, where it broke, and the long part jutting off to the right is the start of the mandible for the dobsonfly
- Bugscope Team the dome is the compound eye
- Guest what is it111

- Bugscope Team this is a mosquito claw, but we were just looking at only part of the dobsonfly head before
- Bugscope Team the mosquito claw is the v shape with the little antler protrusions
- 12:35pm
- Guest Is the claw as spikey as it looks?
- Guest How do the claws on a misquito attach?
Bugscope Team they have a tendon they are attached to beneath the exoskeleton that the insect can pull or loosen when it wants to grab or let go of things. I don't know if you have ever eaten crab legs before but they have a similar attachment in them
- Guest /how does it eat and what does it eat
- Guest IS THat the way it bites
Bugscope Team no no no. They have a proboscis that has different mouth parts in it. Some of the parts cut into the skin, then there is a tube that injects an anticoagulant in our blood and sucks out the blood
- Guest why does a mosqutio give you red bumps and what part of the its body does that
Bugscope Team the anticoagulant it injects us with before it feeds makes us itchy as well
- Guest is that claw sharp??? wILL IT HURT ME???!!!!!
Bugscope Team no it is very tiny- we most likely won't feel it
- Guest The claw looks like it has feathures. well sort of.
- Guest can we see the part that gives you the bite
Bugscope Team this mosquito is actually a male but it has a proboscis that it uses to drink nectar from

- Guest what type of necter?
- Bugscope Team only the females bite us. They need the blood to have the energy to lay their eggs
- Guest wat r those feather like thingys o it
Bugscope Team those are scales, the mosquito is covered in them
- Guest what makes stink buugs stinky when you kill them and my friend calls them frankies is that the sceintific name of is that a nickname

- Bugscope Team it is very leggy but between the eyes is the proboscis

- Bugscope Team the proboscis kind of looks like a leg
- Guest can we see the thorax
Bugscope Team sure the thorax is the part where the legs are attached
- Guest Is that the inside or outside of its body?
- Guest can we see thewasp head ?
- Bugscope Team the eyes are the bumpy squished part in the middle of the screen
- Bugscope Team and the proboscis goes up to the upper left
- 12:40pm
- Guest can we see the moskito eye?
- Guest what r those large bumpy things
- Bugscope Team sure the driver can take you there when ready

- Guest are those things sticking out its legs?
Bugscope Team most of them are. It has very long legs and a long proboscis
- Bugscope Team here is a spiracle on a stink bug
- Guest WHAT IS THAT?????
- Bugscope Team it is a hole used for breathing. They are connected to a long tube that runs along the body called a trachea. They don't breathe through their mouths like we can, and they dont have noses. These are similar to nostrils since they have little "nose hairs"
- Guest thanks
- Guest What are the bumps right around the spiracle?
Bugscope Team those are dried juices, like oils maybe from the stink it produces
- Guest how big are those hairs in thast hole?
Bugscope Team right now the scalebar is about the size of a human hair, so they are much smaller
- Guest can we see the wasp head?
- Guest can we see the wasp claw

- Guest Where is that hole with trhe hair located?
- Guest where is that hole located?
Bugscope Team it is on the abdomen of the stink bug. There are multiple segments on the abdomen that make it so the abdomen is more flexible, and here there are 2 spiracles on each segment- one on either side
- Bugscope Team this is the stink gland area
- 12:46pm
- Bugscope Team The little matrix above the hairs we think helps soak up some of the smell so the stink bug doesn't have to smell its own stink

- Guest are the circles cells??
Bugscope Team they are made up of multiple cells that we can't see
- Guest wow
- Guest What is that webbed stuff? It looks like it is a cobweb.
Bugscope Team we think those help soak up the stink smell. The little wrinkles are soft area that can expand a little possibly. Not sure how it works exactly
- Guest why does it have the grid pattern?
- Guest what are those tree like things? on the bottom?
Bugscope Team those are little hairs, like what we saw in the spiracle. The stink might come out of that area, or it could be a different type of spiracle. There is also a hole you can see at a lower mag that the stink might come out
- Guest Was that a girl or boy bug?
Bugscope Team not sure if this is a girl or boy sorry

- Guest so the webed stuff is like a sponge
- Bugscope Team stink bugs didnt even show up in the us until the 1990's.
- Guest Are there any possible ways to tell?
- Guest what are the little horns?
Bugscope Team those were hairs
- Guest what is that/
- Guest how do they mate
- Bugscope Team see that little slit nearer the leg could be the stink hole
- Bugscope Team the long stick in the middle of the bug is the proboscis
- Guest where did stinkbugs come from?
Bugscope Team asia, like those fun asian ladybugs we have
- Guest why do the legs look hairy?
- Guest I MEAN WHAT DO THOSE HAIR THINGS DO?
- Guest how do they mate

- 12:51pm
- Guest What are those little hairs that I THINK ARE ON HIS LEGS
Bugscope Team they are hairs. Hairs help the insect to sense what is going on around it, like feel or taste or temperature changes. Most you see on the body are for feeling
- Guest what are the circles in the backround?

- Guest What are the bumps next to the body
Bugscope Team that is the carbon tape that we stick the insects on
- Bugscope Team the carbon tape has lots of little bumps in it
- Guest how do they mate ,really we want to know.
- Guest What are those shapes around the centerz?

- Guest what is the silverfish sceintific name?
Bugscope Team silverfish are in the genus lepisma in the order thysanura.
- Guest what is that??????????????

- Guest do you have a asian ladybug
Bugscope Team no sorry. Our stock is very low after the winter. We hope to start replenishing it soon
- Guest wat does an asian ladybug look like
Bugscope Team it looks like a normal ladybug
- Guest please do!!!
- Guest how does it mate
- Guest is any of that hair???
Bugscope Team yes there is some hair there and scales
- Guest About how long is a stinkbugs life?
Bugscope Team stink bugs live for about a year.
- Guest how do they mate?
Bugscope Team the stink bugs meet up abdomen to abdomen
- Guest what?

- Bugscope Team same for mosquitos
- Bugscope Team they look like they are facing away from each other when they are mating
- Guest how do you tell if a bug is a boy or girl
Bugscope Team sometimes they will have a telling feature on them, like the antennae of a male mosquito are more frilly than a females. Sometimes you won't be able to tell until you open them up
- 12:56pm
- Guest y do stink bugs invade your house

- Guest Do you know how large the largest stinkbug is?
Bugscope Team they can get to be around a half an inch long
- Guest what is that? it looks weird
Bugscope Team this is the mosquito compound eye. The white wormy things are probably wax from the drying method we put the mosquito through
- Guest what are those lumps?
Bugscope Team they wouldn't normally be on the eye but that is what wax looks like
- Guest how do the bugs use those parts

- Guest what do you look for when you open up the bug?
Bugscope Team genitalia
- Guest \
- Guest oooops
- Guest what is that
Bugscope Team these are simple eyes found on the top of the head on the dobsonfly. The simple eyes are used to triangulate the direction of the sun so it knows where to fly. That's why there are three. This is why sometimes at night insects are attracted to light
- Guest when sicateas mate there is like a powdery stuff, what is it?
- Guest how long do bugs carry there babys in there stomach
Bugscope Team in the case of the roach, they can be pregnant their entire lives- they just keep popping out babies

- 1:01pm
- Guest what are those scales????????????
- Guest on that anima;ls back it looks like it has scales
Bugscope Team this is a silverfish and it is covered in them
- Bugscope Team the silverfish gets its name from the way it wiggles around when it moves and the light that reflects off their scales (makes them look silver)
