- Bugscope Team We are ready to roll.
- 12:08pm
- Bugscope Team Welcome to Bugscope, Mrs. H-T and Mrs. P!
- Bugscope Team Ms. Drake and Mrs. Balliet! Welcome to Busgcope!
- 12:14pm
- Teacher Thank you, we are excited to be here!
- Bugscope Team Great!
- Bugscope Team Let us know when you have questions -- about anything.
- Teacher Thank you!
- Teacher Will do....getting set up!
- Bugscope Team presently Mrs. H-T has control of the 'scope, but we can confer it to anyone who wants it, one person at a time.
- Teacher Sounds good.
- Bugscope Team this is a caterpillar, and you can see what other presets we made -- locations on the sample stub -- on the screen to the left
- Bugscope Team the person with control of the 'scope can click on one of the presets and the 'scope will drive to that place
- Teacher Okay, I'm back. I will start changing the image as soon as we get all of the kids logged on.
- Bugscope Team totally cool
- Bugscope Team ok great :)
- 12:20pm
- Bugscope Team the kids may have to log on as guests if the student notation is not available
- Bugscope Team this is a brand-new interface that still has a few glitches...
- Guest Hi
- Guest Hi
- Bugscope Team hi there
- Teacher Hi
- Bugscope Team Hello! Welcome to Bugscope!
- Guest Hello
- Guest HI
- Guest hi
- Guest hi
- Guest Hi
- Guest hello scot can i ask you a question
Bugscope Team you bet!
- Guest Hello
- Guest Scot I have a Q.
- Bugscope Team let us know when any of you have questions
- Guest How old is Bug Scope?
- Guest How long does it take to make a scanning electron microsope?
- Guest About how many different bugs do you look at per week?\
- Guest WHATS YOUR FAVORITE BUG TO EXAMINE?
- Guest ok why do scaning electron microscopes youse electrons instead of protons
Bugscope Team I think it's because it's much easier to work with electrons, compared to protons
- Guest WHATS YOUR FAVORITE BUG TO EXAMINE?
Bugscope Team i like wasps and bees because you can sometimes see their stingers and they usually have some cool looking pollen on them
- Guest ok
- Guest cate can i ask you some questions
Bugscope Team sure
- Guest scot, whats your favorite part about being a scientist?
- Guest why do so many scientists look at bugas
- Guest Why aren't the legs part of the 3 body parts
Bugscope Team the legs are part of the thorax, one of the three body part

Bugscope Team four or 5 minutes, usually
- 12:25pm

- Guest why do so many scientists look at bugs
- Guest hi what makes a scanning electron microscope better than a light microscope?
Bugscope Team the electron microscope uses electrons instead of light. Electrons are much smaller which means we can resolve much smaller things (as small as 2 nanometers with this microscope)
- Guest HOW FAST DOES LITE TRAVLE
- Guest How many bugs have you looked at this month?
Bugscope Team 30 or 40 or more

- Guest joe
- Guest scot can i ask a question?

- Guest WHY DO U LIKE EXAMINING BUGS?
- Guest What was the most interesting specimen you have ever looked at?
- Guest Why is the electron microscope so big
- Guest Is the electron microscope easy or hard to use?
Bugscope Team I think this microscope is pretty easy to use. We have shown this microscope to little kids before and they were able to drive around pretty well in under 5 minutes

- Guest Is your job dangerous in any way?
Bugscope Team sometimes we work with bad chemicals, but we have fume hoods and gloves
- Guest About how many different bugs do you look at in one week?

- Guest HOW FAST DOES LITE TRAVLE
Bugscope Team 186, 300 mps

- Guest How long does it take to make a scanning electron microscope?
Bugscope Team it seems like a few months
- Guest Hello do you have to have certain size bugs?
Bugscope Team Yes, they can't be too big. Usually the smaller the better because those small insects usually have a lot of cool features to look at

- Guest CATE
- Guest who invented the SEM?
- Guest How long does it take to prepare a specimen?
Bugscope Team after it is dry, only a few minutes to coat with gold-palladium
- Guest Cate, is it hard to prepare a slide?
Bugscope Team No. I first take an aluminum disc and put double stick carbon tape on it. From there I pick out what insects I want to use, unless the school sent some in, and then wherever I want to lay down an insect, I dab a little silver paint to help glue the insect to the tape and also to help make the sample more grounded. The hardest part is not crushing the sample as I pick it up. Insects get very brittle after they die and dry out.
- Guest thank you scot
- Guest is it hard to prepare a slide
Bugscope Team it is easy
- Guest is it hard to prepare a specimen
- Guest what are we looking at
- Guest thanks cate! What are the coolest things you've seen under a microscope?

- Teacher Scot, why did they change the format of the controls?
Bugscope Team we wanted to improve it, using what we have learned, and at the same time provide for more people to be able to get on at one time. this was a big test today.
- Teacher I had trouble centering and maneuvering more this year than last.
- 1:21pm
- Bugscope Team in a way Chas wanted to make changes just for something different, and I am sorry - we had some lag this year in being able to control, and also to get to questions
- Teacher I like the format of the chat better, but not the controls.
Bugscope Team we are still working the kinks out, hopefully the next time you use it, we will have everything under control better
- Bugscope Team fill out the feedback and let us know how you want it changed so we know!
