- Bugscope Team hi wagueststudent
- Bugscope Team welcome to Bugscope!
- 10:24am
- Bugscope Team let us know when you have questions about what you are seeing
- Bugscope Team this is a brand new interface for Bugscope
- Bugscope Team we are getting used to it and also checking for 'bugs'
- 10:29am

- Guest hi

- Bugscope Team whoa that was fast
- Guest how do you get the pictures so detailed?
Bugscope Team we are using a scanning electron microscope, not a regular light microscope. Electrons are smaller and are able to resolve much finer details
- Guest Why are the pictures in black and white?
- Bugscope Team note that we see only in black and white
- 10:35am
- Bugscope Team that is because the images are actually signal, from the electrons that are knocked out of the sample; they don't come from light
- Guest oh wow, that's interesting. what do you coat the insects with again? and what does that do?
Bugscope Team they're coated with several nanometers of gold-palladium alloy
- Teacher HI. I just got on! Yay. My students will be here shortly. The images and new look on Bugscope are great! What insects do you have for us?
Bugscope Team we have a crane fly, spider, a couple beetles, a wasp, a moth, a whirligig beetle, and a praying mantis
- Teacher They look awesome. Perfect for what we are studying. We just learned about the "joined" wings of the order Hymenoptera....glad to see the hooks for kids to see.
Bugscope Team that is exciting!
- Guest what does the gold coating do? does that have something to do with making them hard, or does it have to do with zooming them in?
- Bugscope Team the gold-palladium makes the samples conductive. when we beam electrons at the samples, those high-energy electrons knock what are then called secondary electrons out of the surface of the sample, and if the surface of the sample has a super thin film of gold-palladium on it, the sample does not charge up with electrons, and the images look good

- Guest awesome, that is interesting, thanks!
- Bugscope Team ll check
- Bugscope Team Mrs Yenny if you have your cursor over the image, do you see a plus sign and get a message asking you to click in the image to move towards that spot?
- 10:40am
- Teacher Ok - it will take a few moments for my students to come in and get logged on. Yes, I see a plus sign and have been clicking per the message.
- Bugscope Team this is the first time we have operated using this new interface, so we are working things out.

- Bugscope Team Mrs Yenny can you click on one of the presets -- are things still not working?

- Bugscope Team Yay!
- Teacher Now kids are here and I'm going to show them how to log on. thanks for your patience.
- 10:46am
- Bugscope Team everything going ok?
- Bugscope Team i think the server is hanging maybe
- Bugscope Team ..
- Teacher Ok, thanks for your patience, I'm getting kids logged on. Our computer lab is having a few issues, but we are getting there.

- Guest the kids are going to be able to ask questions themselves? that's awesome. what grade is your class?
- Guest the kids are going to be able to ask questions themselves? that's awesome. what grade is your class?
- 10:56am

- Student how many facets are in a ePr
- Teacher Ok, we are in, but our computers are a bit slow - maybe because we have so many on the same site at one time. Kids are all here. They are 7th graders. The first quesion has to do with the number of facets in one compound eye.

- Bugscope Team praying mantis eye!
- Student sorry we mean ePr

- 11:05am
- Student helPr
- Student yePr
- Bugscope Team there are lots of facets in the praying mantis eye, too many to count
- Bugscope Team I think we had a server issue here that was making a problem
- Teacher slow connections - we are adjusting......we'd like to know more about the computndound eyes. What colors might a a preying mantis see?
Bugscope Team we assume praying mantises can see green and brown, and likely red and yellow, but we are not sure
- Student o. ok thanks%Pr
- Bugscope Team one of the ommatidia will still have a huge number of atoms in it
- Student Were here we got in Pr
- Student o. that is really coPr
- Student hi cole!Pr
- Student this is awesome we finally got it to woPr
Bugscope Team there was a problem coming from the computer bugscope runs off of. Sorry :)
- Teacher How many molecules are in one eye of the praying mantis?
Bugscope Team probably a few hundred thousand, at least
Bugscope Team A very large number. Even with the high magnification of an SEM we can't begin to see molecules. Some TEMs, another type of electron microscope, have been able to image atoms though
- Student how far is this zoomed in%Pr
Bugscope Team this is about 168x right now
- 11:10am
- Student ok why is their pr at the end of everything %Pr
- Student What color do prey mantis see%Pr
Bugscope Team likely, because they are predators, they see most of the colors we see as well. I don't think they see in UV.
- Student idk%Pr
- Bugscope Team there should be a button called "More info" in the upper right where you can get all the information coming from the microscope

Bugscope Team if you had a compound eye like that, with so many facets, you would have very good peripheral vision; you would also have the ability -- this is important -- to see changes in the visual field occur very quickly
- Student do you like scienPr
- Student what are the hairs fPr
- Teacher Are we looking at the mouthparts of the beetle? Are they called palps?
Bugscope Team there are some palps sticking up that you can see. One is clearly see sticking up over the head in the middle
- Student wow very interesting!! Pr

- Student he means live Pr

- Student what do you like about scienPr
Bugscope Team we really like having the ability to ask a question and then use the microscopes to help answer that questions

- Teacher Can you tell us about insect "hearing"?
Bugscope Team many insects listen using some of those same 'hairs,' or setae, that we have been talking about. they sense sound as vibration, which of course it is. praying mantises are said to have one large 'ear' on the thorax, however.
- Student what is the biggest insect on earth%Pr

- Student what do u call those haiPr
- Student what do you call these hooPr
- Teacher Do all insects in this order have these hooks?
- Student what is the most dangerous beetle in the world Pr
Bugscope Team that is a good question -- it would likely be one that is poisonous if you eat it, unless you consider danger the ability to kill trees, which would also make sense
- Student wow never thought it would look like thPr
- Student that Pr
- Student does an ant hear through ears or antennas%Pr
Bugscope Team through its antennae! good question!
- Student hooks sorry Pr

Bugscope Team they use those hairs to feel around what is going on around them. They can't feel through their exoskeleton very well (like we can feel things through our skin). There are nerves connected to the hairs underneath their "shell"
- Student why would that be a myth if you step on a daddy long leg ou can smell the poisPr
Bugscope Team they are said to be extremely poisonous but have mouthparts that are too small to bite you; there are a number of places on the Web that say that is not true, and I am not sure what the truth is there.
