Bugscope Team electron microscopes work a little differently than light microscopes. They use electrons, which can see much finer details (as small as 2 nanometers with this microscope) and the detector collects a signal. So it's black and white

Bugscope Team those would be hairs, called setae (pronounced see-tee). They let the insects feel what's going on through their exoskeleton

Bugscope Team when we use electrons to image, they are smaller than light, which is why we can see better than you can with a light microscope, but the image shows up as signal, in levels from white to black
