- Guest Nate Why would that be a snake
- Guest hey nate
- Bugscope Team it is especially cool here to see the eye through the center of the proboscis
- Guest why is it swirly
Bugscope Team when the proboscis isn't in use it's curled up. When it wants to drink something hemolymph (bug blood) filled the proboscis and it unfurls like a new years noise maker
- Guest how much does the micro scope cost
- Guest what is that
- Guest how much does a eletrone microscope cost
- Guest idk good question
- Guest moth something
Bugscope Team the proboscis is the mouthpart, like a straw

- Guest is that a fly??
- Guest cool
- Guest so cool
- Guest is that a fly??
- Guest that is cool what is it
- Guest fly?

- Guest What do they use those hairs for
Bugscope Team they need those hairs to feel what's going on around them. They have an exoskeleton that is like a suit of armor to us. If we wore a suit of armor we wouldn't feel anything touch our skin. The hairs they have are connected to nerves underneath the exoskeleton allowing them to feel, taste/smell, among other things
- Guest what is this thing?!
- Guest how many times can it like zoom in?
Bugscope Team it can go above 200,000x but that is about the limit for publishable images
- Guest LIKE THOSE LARGE WORMS UNDERGOUND

- Guest cool
- Guest go Cheyenne
- Guest thats right

- Guest cool
- Guest yea man thats awsome
- Guest do microscopes have color, so u can see the color of the bug in magnifacation?
Bugscope Team electron microscopes work a little differently than light microscopes. They use electrons, which can see much finer details (as small as 2 nanometers with this microscope) and the detector collects a signal. So it's black and white
- Guest wow!
- Guest :)
- Bugscope Team whoa gnarly this is the head of the cricket
- Guest niiiiiiiiiiiiice
- Guest nate
- Bugscope Team you can false color electron images though

- Guest thats so cool
- Guest click on a picture that has more detail pleassee

- Guest that is cool scot
- Guest is that big thing in the middle its nose??

- Guest nice awsome cool
- Guest yes go with olivia please
- Guest what is that bump on its nose?
Bugscope Team not sure why it is a bump, but likely that shape gives it some strength
- Guest how big is the microscope
- Guest what is that
- Guest oh
- Guest are these arms
- Guest its a raceway
- Guest y does it look like it has hairs coming outta his sides and horns?
- Guest is that a BUG

- Guest what are those oval looking things on the misqueto?
- Guest how long is this
- Guest what is this thing
Bugscope Team to the far right is where the antenna comes out. to the left some scales can be seen

- Bugscope Team if you fly into a spider web, the scales will stick but you might be able to leave them behind and get out
- Guest its u sara
- Guest wow this microscope is realy powerful, how many times does this multiply the mosquito's size

- Guest what is this

- Guest what in the world is this
Bugscope Team it's a diatom -- a silica shelled water crreature
- Guest wow
- Guest looks like a rino
- Guest wow!!!!!!!
- Guest why is it not in color
Bugscope Team we are imaging using electrons instead of light and when the detector gathers the electrons, it reads a signal that outputs an image to us. We can use false coloring but that is only after we have already taken the image and start processing it
- Guest what is that
- Guest what is tha thing
- Guest wow

- Guest cool
- Guest what
- Guest its a cricket face
- Guest IT LOOKS LIKE A SPEAR HEAD

- Guest cccccccccccccooooooooolllllll
- Guest what is that

- Guest what is that
- Guest werid

- Guest it looks like a messed up mouth
- Guest so its sense of tuch is realy developed?
- Guest is that its hand
- Guest what is that
- Guest it looks like a tick up close
- Bugscope Team insects have an exoskeleton, which is kind of like wearing armor, and the setae stick through that armor so that the insect can sense its environment

- Guest do you get bugs every day to look at from other people
- Guest so the people that writing in the green r u teachers or students
- Guest so like i woundn't have a reason to have aracknaphobia because spiders don't have germs... like house spiders or whatever you call them...? haha i feel so dumb
Bugscope Team no it was a good question, and we didn't know better until we got to see them up close

- 9:08am

- Guest ALSEB has to leave the room.
- Guest a dead snake with it skin falling off
- Guest can i drive\
- Guest is it a moth
Bugscope Team this is part of the moth -- the strawlike proboscis
- Guest ALSEB has control, right?
- Bugscope Team Riley has control now.
- Guest What part is this of the moth?
- Guest It looks like a long snake
- Guest what is it?
- Guest so this moth is dirty I guess!?!
Bugscope Team it cannot help being dirty after it dies; it's probably sat around somewhere for a little while
- Guest who is driving
- 9:25am
- Guest Odd, just lagged out
- Guest what part of the mouth is this
Bugscope Team it's the tube through which the moth feeds
- Guest What part is this of the moth?

- Guest What is a Proboscis? It's part of a moth right?
Bugscope Team it's a feeding tube for this moth where it drink nectar through it
- Guest whos drivving
Bugscope Team John just this sec I gave you control.
- Guest ohh so is that chuncky stuff food?

- Guest is the chukcky suff food?

- Guest What is this??
- Guest dead fly

- Guest What is it?

- Guest is that a miskito

- Guest Male Mosquito!
Bugscope Team that's right

- Guest Yes, yes it is. I am always right!

Bugscope Team they are dome-like so the mosquito can see in all directions
- Guest oh thank you
- Guest Sickk
- Guest thanks for leting me drive, but can i drive agian?????????????????

- Guest What is underneath the Mosquito, whats the background?
- Guest how long do you work on this
Bugscope Team this has been running (Bugscope) for 11+ years
- Guest do you do this full time or do you switch out with people
- Bugscope Team you can tell it's male when it has really fuzzy/frilly antennae
- Guest No, we all want a chance.

- Guest This is very cool
Bugscope Team I just gave you control. Gabrielle.
- Guest is that a fly if iming right?
- Guest What kind of bug is this?
- Guest what are the prickles?
- Guest how many dots do they approximently have/
Bugscope Team the dots are the facets of the eye, and mosquitos have hundreds of them. The more facets there are, the better eyesight they have
- Guest a bug leg

- Guest is this the same bug but just from a differrent view?
Bugscope Team this is the tip of the abdomen of the mosquito
- Guest how many things have u looked at under this microscope?

- Guest what is that?
- Guest I cant see it good it is a blare
- Guest is this an electron microscope?
Bugscope Team you are using a scanning electron microscope yes

- Guest what are we looking at now
Bugscope Team this is one of the gills, or what we think are gills
- Guest How do you pick the driver?
- Guest It looks like a bed sheet
- Guest eye
- Guest cool
- Guest from what animal did this skin come from
- Guest I can only imaghine the size of that microscope...
- Guest Wow this os cool it is snake skin?
Bugscope Team this is a compound eye
- Guest this is like snake skin
- Guest An eye of a cricket
Bugscope Team yeah we are looking at the compound eye
- Guest bed bugs
- Guest how long have u used this microscope?
Bugscope Team almost 12 years
- Guest What eye of what bug?
- Guest how big is this microscope
- Guest How do you choose the driver?
- Guest Is this Microscope hooked up to the computer or is this Microscope programmed into the computer?
- Guest Thats a really long time
- Guest is this an eye? And if it is whos eye is it?
- Guest How does the microscope work
Bugscope Team we beam electrons at the samples in the vacuum chamber, and secondary electrons come back from the surfaces of the samples, and they are collected as signal
- Guest Of course, I'm always right/

- Guest How do you choose the driver?!
- Guest who has controll??
- 9:36am
- Guest can i drive
- Guest woah
- Guest how big is this microscope?
Bugscope Team there are 2 main components to the microscope. The body of it is about as big as a fridge, and the computer part takes up the space of a large desk
- Guest a bug shell
- Guest Can you pick a different driver please?
- Guest Is this a skin sample os srots?
- Guest Can we have a different driver, I want a chance. How do you choose drivers?
- Bugscope Team Ali I just gave you control
- Guest is that skin

- Guest IS there only one you microspe you can use?
Bugscope Team we only have this microscope for bugscope, but we have many microscopes in the lab
- Guest how many electrons does it take to view the object
Bugscope Team millions upon millions; it is scanning constantly

- Guest how big is this microscope
- Guest me to sometimes

- Guest What are the sharp things?
- Guest Ignore J for the most part
- Guest Ugh, the chat interface is driving me nuts
Bugscope Team sorry dude
- Guest parasite

- Guest what are the prickle things

- Guest how big is this microscpope?!?

- Guest what are the sharp things?

- Guest Are these slides just pictures or are they fixed slides???
Bugscope Team this is all live. the bugs are in the microscope and we are actively imaging them

- Guest how do you know how to work the electron microscope
- Guest oh cool! ; )
- Guest How big is the microscope
Bugscope Team it is about the size of a large desk
- Guest What is your favorite part about this assinment
- Guest how many times dose the scope magnify
- Guest What is this that we are focused on, I know it's a fruitfluy compound eye, but what is this circular thing.
- Guest Really, I expected it to be much larger than that
- Guest comment
- Guest how do u get this slide
Bugscope Team Cate mounts the samples on doublestick carbon tape on a stub 1.75 in. in diamter.
- Guest that ant that big
- Guest Sick

- Guest claw
- Bugscope Team and we coat the samples with a fine layer of gold-palladium

- Guest this looks sort of 3D
- Guest Looks a bit like a lobster claw
- Guest a junebug claw

- Guest Do you have to have propper trasining to work the microscope?
Bugscope Team yes. We train people to use it.

- Guest who is driving???
- Guest Do you have to have propper training to work the scope??

- Guest is that a wing
- 9:41am
- Guest earwirth back
- Guest so how many images of bugs do you have?
Bugscope Team in the Bugscope database there are thousands. but this is live imaging, so you're making new images as you control the 'scope

- Guest Cricket face!

- Guest Can quest come in real life and use the scope?
Bugscope Team sure!
- Guest so does the microscope like move over there when we control it?
- Guest Cricket face... looks, well, messed up
- Guest tick face

- Guest It looks like a face
- Guest so do you guys study bugs for a living?
Bugscope Team no we train people to do their own research using this and a bunch of other microscopes

- Guest A head of a cricket

- Guest IS this a fun job to have?
- Guest is it a face?

- Guest how big is a leg of a cricket

- Guest What are those hair things on its legs?
- Bugscope Team so the 'scope is like a large desk but has a 6-foot-tall column on one end. and it has its own water, air, electricity, nitrogen. it has its own room.
- Guest Cricket hear through there legs! Thanks you for anwseriong my question by the way.
- Guest do you guys know how many times this scope can magnify
- Guest the side of a bug?
- Guest how do crickets hear/
- Guest 6 feet tall, wow!
- Guest Is that a bug on that bug's legs?
Bugscope Team Dude I think it is a broken-off limb, but we do see other insects/mites sometimes

- Guest Either way, it sounds painful

- Guest this site is a interesting way for schools to use microscopes without having to buy microscopes!

- Guest how does the electron work
- Guest are those lines hair
- Bugscope Team Sorry I keep hitting a combination of keys that close the software down for me.

- Guest HE'S WATCHING YOU
- Guest Its a fly by the looks
- Guest the microscope is kind of like a person with its own water and room and all ha ha
Bugscope Team that is right -- a $600,000 person
- Guest Can you change the driver, I believe somebody else should get a turn, like TaylorD
- Guest what are those hair things on the bug legs?
Bugscope Team those would be hairs, called setae (pronounced see-tee). They let the insects feel what's going on through their exoskeleton
- Guest Can bugs see like we can?
- 9:46am

- Guest that is alot of money for that machine
- Guest im confused???????? cumputer to slow just seeing randomly wierd blobs of magnified bugs.
Bugscope Team was that a question? we do this so people can see a world they normally cannot.
- Guest eggs

- Guest How much does it weigh?

- Guest how much does the microscopes weigh
- Guest wow it almost looks like some sort of underwater coral or something

- Guest hair on a bug
- Guest what is that?
Bugscope Team I think the things that look like thick-legged spiders are gills
- Guest Almost looks like some type of moss growing off of a bug
- Guest im so confused
Bugscope Team sorry let us know if we can help
- Guest how many times can this microwscope magnify??
Bugscope Team it can magnify a few hundred thousand, but for insects, we don't usually see much beyond 40,000x
- Guest What is all the stuff around the bugs??
Bugscope Team a lot of it is debris from being in the water
- Guest is this legs?
- Guest Thank you for lettting Taylor be the driver.
Bugscope Team np dude

- Guest are those legs?
Bugscope Team they're gills that collect oxygen from the water
- Guest leg hair?
- Guest Haha.
- Guest thats a lot of magnifyiong'
- Guest can i drive please//
- Guest can it be shown in color?
Bugscope Team only after it has been false colored, but our software doesn't do that
- Guest ??
- Guest why is its alwasys black and wite?
- Guest why is it all in black and white?
Bugscope Team when we use electrons to image, they are smaller than light, which is why we can see better than you can with a light microscope, but the image shows up as signal, in levels from white to black

- Guest Are we able to see these bugs in color?
- Guest how does it pick people to drive
Bugscope Team scot or I can pick out who to have drive
