- Bugscope Team almost done with presets

- 9:00am

- Bugscope Team good morning, Dory!
- Bugscope Team We are just about ready
- Teacher Good morning. Glad you are here. Need to test my ability to do this.

- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Team ok, we want to get one more preset, then we'll unlock it for ya

- Bugscope Team ok, we are done with presets
- 9:05am
- Bugscope Team i unlocked the session
- Teacher I have about 25 students in the class coming in. Is that too many computers to chat? Should I put them in groups of 2?
Bugscope Team probably best to do 2 to a computer
- Bugscope Team you should see controls on the right
- Bugscope Team 25 questions all at once might be too many... :)
- Bugscope Team but 12-13, we can handle that
- Bugscope Team you can click on a preset and it'll take you there
- Bugscope Team or you can use the controls on the upper right: mag, nav, focus and adjust
- Bugscope Team when using navigation, click to center is much easier than click to drive
- Bugscope Team and of course if you have any questions, please just ask us
- Teacher Are we ready yet?
Bugscope Team yes, can you see my chat?
- Bugscope Team go for it! start driving around or click on a preset to change what insect you are looking at
- Bugscope Team dory, can you see this chat here?
- Teacher How do I work the mag?
Bugscope Team well, just click on the + or the - to change it... give it a try
- Bugscope Team i'm worried dory is running at a low res and can't see the chat
- Teacher yes. can see your chat.

- Bugscope Team okay cool, try click on the + in the magnification

- Bugscope Team there ya go, nice
- 9:10am
- Bugscope Team i would suggest ONLY using click to center, don't use click to drive

- Bugscope Team and you can click on any preset and it'll take you to that preset

- Bugscope Team this is the mouth
- Bugscope Team the sponging mouthparts
- Teacher i am waiting for my class. I think I ;am ok. Good suggestion.
- Bugscope Team cool, we are ready anytime

- Bugscope Team Cool! Just let us know if you have any problems or questions.
- Bugscope Team we can also give control of the scope to students once they login. just let us know if you want us to switch control
- 9:20am
- Teacher kids are here and logging on. can't wait!
- Bugscope Team coolness
- Bugscope Team hey welcome to bugscope!
- Student wat is your name
- Student what is your name????????
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope!
- Student Hello
- Student hi
- Student hey
- Bugscope Team welcome to Bugscope!
- Bugscope Team this is a fruit fly
- Student hey cj!
- Student hey
- Bugscope Team you can see its compound eye, on the lower edge of the head
- Bugscope Team and you can see its antennae
- Student really?
- 9:25am
- Student no really
- Student how many antennae does it have
Bugscope Team two antennae, and they are each composed of two parts
- Student hi
- Student hi

- Bugscope Team fruit flies kind of look like they are wearing gas masks
- Student how many compound eyes does it have
Bugscope Team Two compound eyes
- Teacher perhaps you could help us with the parts of this leg.
Bugscope Team The parts of the leg are the coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia, tarsus
- Student they look fuzzy
- Student n gross
- Bugscope Team there's a basal part of the antenna, like a thick pad, and there's a part like branches
- Student how many simple eyes
Bugscope Team three simple eyes, called ocelli, but we cannot see them
- Student of course they look fuzzy mar mar
Bugscope Team the fuzzy stuff are setae (pronounced see-tee), they help it sense its environment
- Student how many simple eyes
- Teacher students need to know how many antennae it has
Bugscope Team two antennae, but each is in two parts
- Guest wat is ur name
- Student what do they eat?
Bugscope Team Fruit flies feed on yeast and other microbes that live in rotting fruit
- Student how many simple eyes does a fruit fly head hav?
- Bugscope Team The tarsus (plural is tarsi) are the final segments (the feet).
- Student ?'
- Student dont talk to me jk
- Student .......
- Student heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
- Bugscope Team you can also see the tip of the haltere
- Bugscope Team middle low left
- Student THAT MEANS JUST KIDING
- Student other info

- Guest hello?
Bugscope Team hi robby

- Student whos robby

- Student hello

- Student any other info?
- Bugscope Team notice the compound eyes also have setae on them, those setae help sense wind speed and direction, helps it fly
- Guest how many antennae does this bug have
Bugscope Team All insects have two antennae.

- Student other info?
- Student mhm

- Student alex do u know anyother info ????
Bugscope Team no, that was the only thing i know, the only thing i'll ever know. ;)
- Bugscope Team fruit flies are part of Diptera -- the flies, of course, called that because they have two wings
- Student how many compound eyes
Bugscope Team All insects have two compound eyes.
- Student the hawk siad hello
- Student what antenna are these
Bugscope Team These are called aristate antennae. Aristate antennae are only found in two suborders of flies.

- Student WAT KIND OF ANNTENNA DOES IT HAVR
Bugscope Team it is a sensory antenna
- 9:30am
- Student how many simple eyes
Bugscope Team 3

- Student ew
- Bugscope Team now we can see one of the antennae very clearly, and we can also see the facets of the compound eye
- Guest what kind of antennae does this bug have
Bugscope Team These are called aristate antennae
- Student dcyfiyulhik,m hbmhgnbfjcjy
- Student how many compound eyes
Bugscope Team two compound eyes

- Student What do they eat?
Bugscope Team Fruit flies feed on yeast and other microbes that live in rotting fruit

- Student what do they eat alex
Bugscope Team all kinds of stuff, plant matter, hamburgers, dead skin, but it has to be in liquid form, that's why they have to puke on it first, to turn it into a liquid
- Student yah alex

- Guest why is this fruit fly gray
- Student Y R THEY GREY

- Student lol
- Teacher thought they could look at the mouth
- Student its the microscope colore
Bugscope Team because we are working with electrons rather than light, we do not see color. we can see things that are smaller than the wavelengths of visible light
- Bugscope Team they have sponging mouthparts that soak up the yeast/microbes they feed upon
- Student how many legs do they have
Bugscope Team Six legs

- Student what kind of bug is this
Bugscope Team fruit fly
- Student do you like skittles
Bugscope Team skittlez are da bezt, you know that!
- Student fruit fly
- Student thanxs
- Student y duz it keep gettin bigger
Bugscope Team The magnification is increasing--we are zooming in
Bugscope Team your teacher is controlling the scope live over the internet, the magnification was increased
- Student it looks creepy
- Student why is it so hary
- Student who is alex
- Student its a bug
- Guest are the eyes smaller than a pierod at the end of the sentence.
Bugscope Team Um, a little larger, but not much.

- Bugscope Team normally this part of the mouth looks different

- Student ?

- Bugscope Team there's the haltere
- Student :O what is that!
- Student we found the gonads
Bugscope Team that is one of the halteres. the gonads are internal in most insects
- Student how many legs does it have
Bugscope Team Six legs

- Student EWWWWWY
- Student .
- Student wow
- Guest what does it eat
Bugscope Team Fruit flies feed on yeast and other microbes that live in rotting fruit
- Student .
- 9:35am

- Student Who is robby?
- Bugscope Team the haltere is like a little punching bag that bangs against the abdomen when flying, helps stabilize flight

- Student WAT IS THAT THING EEEWWWW
Bugscope Team This is the claw at the end of the leg--it is like the ties
- Student htat looks creepy

- Student how many antennae do this one have
- Student how many antennaes?
- Student why do they call it a butterfly
Bugscope Team well, it used to be called a flutter by, because they flutter by you. but then people started reversing the words to butterfly... kinda cool huh?

- Student who knows

- Student how many simple eyes does it have
- Student its not buttery
- Student how many anntenae does this have

- Student scott dont answer my questions!
- Bugscope Team now you can see where the scales have come out

- Guest how many anteaannae does a butterfly have
Bugscope Team two
- Student cool
- Student how many antennae does the butterfly claw have??????????????????????
Bugscope Team Butterfly claws have no antennae. The antennae are on the head
- Student what the scale thing
Bugscope Team scales are kind of like feathers. but one of their helpful functions is that if the insect flies into a web it may still be able to escape by leaving its scales stuck to the web and slipping out

- Student what arew those things on the bugs legs
- Student how many compund and simple eyes do they have?
- Student kk
- Student y is no 1 ansering me
Bugscope Team I just answered you ;)
- Student not really
- Student whos j.c
- Student j.c??????????

- Student jordan cross duh!
- Student nvm

- Student what are the paddle like things called
Bugscope Team Those are scales--they cover the butterfly and make them slippery. The scales are the dusty stuff that gets on your hands when you try to pick up a butterfly.
- Student do you know who i am

- Student this is really slow
- Student akes forever to read the words

- Student :O

- Student are those scales on the butterfly legs
Bugscope Team yep, totally

- Student many simple eyes
Bugscope Team 3

- Student go alex
Bugscope Team rock on!
- Guest what are the holes
Bugscope Team those are holes where the scales fell out
- Student :)

- Student o.o
- Bugscope Team scales also have colors, both structural and pigmented, so the butterflies can identify others of the same species
- Student who is alex
Bugscope Team i work with bugscope
- Student what is that
Bugscope Team this is the head of the butterfly

- Student who is clayee?
- Student cooleyo

Bugscope Team Skittlez try refreshing your browser.
- Bugscope Team the individual facets of the eyes are called ommatidia
- Student :)

- Bugscope Team each ommatidia has a lens in it
- Student scott dont smile!

- Student explain the mouth
Bugscope Team The mouth is called a proboscis. When the butterfly is at rest it is curled up, between the eyes. When the butterfly eats, it extends the proboscis by pumping blood into it. The proboscis straightens and extends--like those party horns that look like snake tongues.
- Student please
- Teacher could you explain the mouthparts?
Bugscope Team the butterfly sucks nectar from deep within in the petals of a flower, and in order to be able to do that it extends its proboscis by forcing hemolymph into it
- Student it looks dusty n kinda ugly
Bugscope Team yeah, dirt and grime can get on the bugs, we call it juju
- Student hi dory
- Student whos mar ma

- Student marissa is mar mar
- Student juju i like it

- Student that looks rlly wierd
- Student gross
- Student yyyyyyy
- Student Who is ESEM?
Bugscope Team that is just the computer that is at the microscope. Nobody is there right now
- Bugscope Team the proboscis is coiled except when it is being used; then it rolls out like a party favor
- Bugscope Team if you computer is slow, try refresh F5, if it's still slow, try to reduce the number of questions, that'll make it easier to see the answered questions
- Student clayee isnt ansering who he or she is
- Student good advice
- Student MKAY
- Student stupid caps
- Student WHO IS CLAYEE?????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Student WHO IS CLAYEE
- Student 2

- Bugscope Team Pollen! My new obsession
- Student o.o
- Student WHO IS CLAYEE
- Student wierd
- Student looks awsome
- Bugscope Team you can see the edge of a scale next to the pollen grain
- Student i ]
- Student Why are you obsessed with pollen?
Bugscope Team This summer I am going to dissect the guts of the beetles that I study to determine what kind of plants they eat ( if they eat at all). One way to determine that is to examine the pollen in the gut. Pollen is really tough so it doesn't get destroyed in the digestive system of the insect.
- Student what is the polon brain connected to
Bugscope Team The pollen is stuck to some of the little setae on the butterfly.
- Bugscope Team The study of pollen is called palynology. There are people who can determine what kind of plant this pollen came from.
- Student whats it do
- Student :)
- Student scott
- Student stop
- Student smiling
- Student i like birds..do you?
- Student ???

Bugscope Team In the upper left is a pollen grain. In the lower right is a scale.
- Student you caught me
- Student whateve
- Student \/lol\/
- Student idk
- Student what t would be ancient
Bugscope Team like your parents' age
- Bugscope Team the scales have those holes in them, that helps to keep the weight of the scale down
- Student does it have esyes
Bugscope Team yep
- Student what is that huge fin looking thing
Bugscope Team that is called a scale
- Student how many eyes
Bugscope Team two compound eyes
- Student what does it eat
Bugscope Team Butterflies usually feed on nectar from flowers. Although some also feed on juices from rotting fruit, tree sap, or even animal poop.
- Student thanks, now any other info
Bugscope Team some monarch butterflies migrate long distances, many hundreds of miles
- Student Do you like Justin Bieber

- 9:50am
- Student ni 5o3we6xsg97h5 .
- Student noooooooooooo hes a kreeper
- Student why is it gray?
Bugscope Team because this is an electron microscope. there is no light in the scope. we use electrons to get the image, not light. since there is no light, and color is a property of the frequency of light, there is no color
- Student cooooooooool
- Student :) :(
- Guest is that one wing
- Student oh yah opps

- Student wow...\
- Student what do the hooks do
Bugscope Team They hold the front and hind wing of the bee together
- Bugscope Team these are the edges of the hindwing of the bee
- Student scott stop answering the questions they ask me!
- Student hi ppl
- Student _______

- Student hi

- Student scott
- Student stop
- Student why would they eat beans
Bugscope Team well, they would eat anything that would keep them alive. any animal would. maybe some flies could eat beans, maybe if they were able to find some decomposed beans

Bugscope Team yeah, cool huh? insects have claws that look really cool up close. claws are used to grab food, hold onto walls, etc.
- Student looks like a head
- Student Cant you show a pictue of a skittle?
Bugscope Team we could if we had one in the microscope
- Student who is j.c

- Student looks like a monsyter

- Student gtg
- Student what is a cool fact about pollon grain?
Bugscope Team Pollen grains are what causes allergies in many people...allergic people's immune systems confusing pollen grains for bacteria and mount an immune response.
- Student me 2

- Bugscope Team dory, are more students coming or is that it?
- 10:08am

- Bugscope Team Dory please let us know what the schedule will be like today. We are planning to shut down between the morning and afternoon so other people can use the microscope.
- Bugscope Team hey welcome to bugscope
- Student what am i looking at
Bugscope Team this the a fruit fly
- Guest What are we looking at?
Bugscope Team this is a fruit fly

- Student how many antenna?
Bugscope Team two antennnae
- Teacher We are here! Ready!
- Student how many antennae does this fly have
Bugscope Team two
- Student yes same question here
Bugscope Team Two antennae, two compound eyes, six legs
- Student compound eyes
Bugscope Team that's right. It has 2 compound eyes and 3 simple eyes we cant see
- Student how long is it
Bugscope Team looks like the antennae are 3 or 400 microns long -- meaning 0.3 to 0.4 mm.
- Student How many compound eye?
- Student how many simple eyes
Bugscope Team 3 and they are called ocelli. They help the fly triangulate the light source to let it know where it is. Like a build in GPS

- Student this is a beautiful fly
Bugscope Team I am sure that its mother thinks so too ;)
- Student why does it look like a eak

- Bugscope Team now you can see one of the compound eyes

- Student HURAY!!!!!

- Bugscope Team the compound eyes have little bristles between the facets
- Student EWWWWW
- Student thats very interesting. do they have hairs out of there eyes
Bugscope Team yes they do -- the hairs, or 'setae,' help them gauge wind speed and direction
- Student pretty
- Bugscope Team this is the branched portion of the antenna; there is also a bulbous base we can see now, in the upper left
- Guest info about fruitfly
Bugscope Team Fruitflies are in the order Diptera, generally in the family Drosophilidae. They live about 2-3 weeks from egg-adult. Fruit flies feed on yeast and other microbes that live in rotting fruit.
- Student What kind of antennae is it?
Bugscope Team it is called an aristate antenna

- Student what are we are looking at
- Student how many species of flies are there?
Bugscope Team Hundreds of thousands. There are many undiscovered species of flies around the world.
- Student Thats cool! would you know the speed of a fly. or this fly
Bugscope Team this is a fruit fly, but the house fly can reach speeds of around 5 mph
- Student how do the hairs help at all?
Bugscope Team the hairs have the same function as nerve endings in our skin, in some ways; they are sensory
- Guest other info about it
Bugscope Team Do you have any specific questions? It is easier for me to answer specific questions.
- 10:18am

- Student NO FLIPPIN WAY!!!!!

- Bugscope Team now we see the sponging mouthparts
- Bugscope Team and some of the limbs

- Student when a fly is on you there is a tube like thing that sucks on you like a mouth wat is it called?
Bugscope Team proboscis
- Student why are there hairs on it
Bugscope Team some of the hairs are chemosensory, some are thermosensory, and some are mechanosensory -- they do a lot of things

- Student hmmmmmmmmmm.... intersesting?
- Student THATS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Team but not all flies have probosces

- Student ahhh wat are we looking at know?

- Student yea i no zack garrett
- Student thats fast

- Student butterfly claw

- Student What are we looking at?
- Student OMG IT WILL KILL US ALLL!!!!!!!

- Student thats pretty cool:)
- Student how many antennae, compound eyes, and simple eyes do butterflies have
Bugscope Team they have two antennae, two compound eyes, and I am not sure about simple eyes -- ocelli. usually there are three, but I am not sure about butterflies
- Student yea it is
- Student what kinda of butterfly is this?
- Student are these skals
Bugscope Team there is a scale on the back claw there. It looks like a ridged potato chip
- Student is it a monarch?
- Student scales

- Student ask cate
- Student how many compound eyes do butterflies have
Bugscope Team two

- Student how may antennae
Bugscope Team two antennae
- Student ok can we look at the whole butterfly now?

- Student how many types of butterflies are there?
- Student do they have any simple eyes
Bugscope Team We've never seen simple eyes on them before, so I think no they dont
- Student TONS!
- Student whats in the background
- Student do all butterflys have claws
Bugscope Team yes all insects have claws unless we broke them off mounting them on the stub, which sometimes happens
- Student very mysterious!
- Bugscope Team small
- Student what is this

- Student hello
Bugscope Team Hello!

- Student what am i looking at
- Student What is the thing in the middle ;)

- Student i love juju
- Student jkjk
- Student whats up with that juju?
Bugscope Team we often see that -- it's like random dirt and dried liquid

- Student eww fun
- Bugscope Team this is the proboscis -- what we think of as the tongue. or it was. now we are looking at the edge of the eye

- Bugscope Team We think this is a kind of fritillary, a small orange butterfly in the family Nymphalidae.
- Student whats that
- Student iss that juju

- 10:29am
- Student is that juju

- Student much deception in this fly the darkside is with it
- Student thats pretty gross
- Student lol

- Bugscope Team to the left is one of the palps

- Student why are they called butterfsdfsdflsd\
- Student how many antennae
Bugscope Team two
- Bugscope Team here is the proboscis, all coiled up when it is not being used

- Student my bad why are they called butterfly
Bugscope Team Alex told us earlier that they were once called 'flutterbies,' and that changing the word to butterfly is a kind of slang

- Student how longg is it
Bugscope Team the tongue is probably a few millimeters long

- Student that toungue

- Student he gots a bubu!

- Student what kind of butterfly is this???
Bugscope Team We think it is a fritillary\\
- Student he will be ok che
- Student =)-
- Bugscope Team see the scales on the top of the head?

- Student yea i see vry clearly
- Student wat are those potatoe chip lookin things?
Bugscope Team those are scales. mosquitoes, butterflies, moths, skippers, silverfish, and some weevils have them.
- Student how large or there eyes
Bugscope Team They are about the size of small beads.

- Student who are we talkin too????
- Student pll
- Bugscope Team annie is an entomologist, Scot and I are microscopists that run this microscope
- Student smart people tippy
- Student what is that
Bugscope Team This is a grain of pollen.
- Student CHIPS ROCK!!!
- 10:34am

- Student what are the little squares?

- Student what are are these squares
Bugscope Team This is a very close view of one of the scales.

- Bugscope Team this is the structure of the scale. It keeps them lightweight and also it gives the butterflies color
- Student are the squares used for anything???
Bugscope Team The squares form the frame of the scale. They are like scaffolding.
- Student o
- Student does it help them fly?
Bugscope Team It probably does serve some purpose to help them fly. However, the main purpose of the scales (most entomologists think) is for protection. The scales make the butterfly very slippery, and difficult to hold onto.

- Student omititya hurray

- Student wHat is that
Bugscope Team this is up close of the compound eye. When it died, it's eyes shriveled a little so they don't look as plump as they would normally

- Student o cool
- Bugscope Team the individual lens you see are called ommatidia
- Student what is that

- Student what is that???
- 10:39am

- Bugscope Team this is one of the palps, which are accessory mouthparts, like little arms, on the crane fly
- Student what are the hairs for???
Bugscope Team the hairs are found all over insects. We call them setae (pronounced see-tee). They help the insects feel what's going around them in their environment like taste or touch, depending on the type of setae. They dont have skin like us that can feel easily, they have a hard shell of armor. These setae are connected to nerves found underneath their armor
- Student will you anser me please
Bugscope Team yes
- Bugscope Team the hairs here are likely chemosensory

- Bugscope Team chemosensory setae (the hairs) can process smells in the air
- Student what is that?
Bugscope Team this is one of the tarsi of the mosquito
- Student it looks evil
- Student what is that
- Student weird
- Student What is that
Bugscope Team This the the claw on the end of a mosquito's leg.
- Student big
- Student icky
- Student wow

- Bugscope Team tarsi are the last several segments of a limb
- Student that looks like the claw?SCARY CLAW:0
- Bugscope Team yes it is a claw -- most insects have claws
- Student me too garrett
- Student i hate mosqutoes
Bugscope Team me too
Bugscope Team mosquitos are a good insect to hate because they are very deadly with all the diseases they carry
- Student wat are the potatoe chips?
Bugscope Team those are scales

- Student what do they use it for
Bugscope Team They use the claws to cling to surfaces
- Bugscope Team scales are kind of like small feathers, and they have several purposed
- Student o
- Bugscope Team oops purposes

- Student omg it has hooks
Bugscope Team yes they are hooks, and they connect the fore- and hindwings of bees or wasps so that when they fly they have essentially two wings

- Bugscope Team these, now, are hamuli on the leading edge of the hindwing of a bee
- Student your smart

- Student i hate bugs!!!!!!!!
Bugscope Team what is cool is that with bugs, we are the predators
- 10:44am
- Student pce out suckas
Bugscope Team heh BYe!
- Teacher Thanks so much. Was a great session. Much of the time they talked to me also. I need to go for another class. See you this afternoon at 2 PM.
