- Bugscope Team Good morning!

- Teacher Good morning, all...you're probably just getting things set up. This is Kelly and Moira ("Mo") from Vermont.
- Bugscope Team We're working on the presets.
- Teacher Great to see you, Scott! Mo says 'good morning'!!! She's very excited.
- Bugscope Team Feel free to watch while we drive around and collect good places for the session.
- Teacher Oooh, are those mites on this critter?
- Teacher The little oblong bits.
- Bugscope Team we can give you control as soon as we are done with presets
- Bugscope Team those are scales
- Bugscope Team loose scales
- Teacher Sounds good. Should I stop typing, so you can work? :-)
- Teacher Mo is laughing out loud.
- Teacher "That's neat!" she says!

- Teacher Wonderful, we'll try to keep it to a minimum. :-) This looks like some sort of moth?
- Bugscope Team that was the head of the earwig
- Teacher yikes! :-)
- Bugscope Team these kind of critters have built-in wirestrippers
- Bugscope Team Alex may have to restart the server
- Teacher ok
- 7:49am
- Bugscope Team we're gonna have to reboot the system...
- Teacher shoul i not relog in?

- Bugscope Team we are good now, no problemo
- Bugscope Team just had to restart the server that handles the live imaging from the scope
- Bugscope Team don't worry. if we go down we will erase your BRAT name so you can use it again, but we're good again..
- Teacher I see.
- Bugscope Team happens once and a while

- Teacher Hehe..."Nasty looking," says Mo.
- Teacher WOW

- Bugscope Team that is a caterpillar proleg
- Teacher Awesome

- Bugscope Team the little eyes are called stemmata
- 7:54am
- Bugscope Team Cate put on as many of yours as she had, or was possible. We usually add stuff to fill in, or if some of the samples we get are not imageable.

- Teacher That's what I figured. :-) Any way to know if there was an armored mayfly that came out okay?

- Bugscope Team watch for it
- Teacher ok
- Teacher That's pretty
- Teacher pollen?

- Bugscope Team yeah this is the coolest beetle
- Bugscope Team yep!
- Teacher :-)
- Bugscope Team the wildest claws I have ever seen
- Teacher Wow, is that the armored mayfly??

- 8:00am

- Teacher We're expecting Steve from the State lab, and Miss Cal and her students from Riverside.
- Bugscope Team sounds good
- Teacher Steve should be a big help!
- Teacher Is there a way to expand the chat screen, perhaps to the side?
Bugscope Team no, the image width is set. these are live images from the microscope, so it needs to be at a stable frame size

- Teacher Hey, look at that...you did something? :-) Chat is now running off to the left side of the screen.
Bugscope Team when we answer a specific question, the answer will show up to the left. but we don't always answer questions like that

- Teacher But my questions are showing up twice. :-9
Bugscope Team sometimes that happens, a hickup in the chat...
- Bugscope Team we can grab questions and answer them to the left if we want to
- Bugscope Team all the chat and images are saved to your bugscope member page, so you can review the entire session in detail anytime after: http://bugscope.beckman.illinois.edu/members/2009-159
- 8:06am

- Teacher Excellent, thanks.
- Teacher Did any of our aquatic critters make it into the slides today?
- Bugscope Team this is one of them. these are not slides. these are aluminum stubs 1.75 inches in diameter
- Bugscope Team water beetle, backswimmer, yeah, they are they, check presets 5 and 4
- Bugscope Team we put all of the samples you sent that were good on the stub

- Teacher Stub, not slide. :-) Got it. Great, the stonefly looks awesome!
Bugscope Team heh, well, the bugs are all on a stub inside the electron microscope, and we are looking at live real time video/images from that electron microscope, which you will control in a moment (when the presets are done, almost there!)

- 8:11am
- Teacher I was worried that most of them didn't make it, seeing as they are aquatic perhaps they had too much soft tissues to survive the drying process?
Bugscope Team yeah, that does happen, the drying will shrivel up the insects very badly sometimes.

- Teacher Cool, that looks like a water penny!

- Teacher no, sowbug. he's jointed
- Teacher sorry
- Teacher Steve will know.
- Teacher Ignore me.
- Bugscope Team These were critical point dried to preserve them as well as possible.
- Bugscope Team these are crustaceans
- Teacher Drat, it's hard to tell at this magnification! Hehe. I've never seen them this close up before.
Bugscope Team heh, there's a lot OTHER interesting things to see at high mag though, it'll be cool

- 8:18am

- Teacher I am holding my breath to see if the armored mayfly shows up. :-) They look like little VW Beetles with the naked eye!
- Bugscope Team we just put it on
- Bugscope Team Okay BRAT you have control
- Teacher *happy grins* Trying to type with my 3-yar-old son on my lap.
- Teacher OMG, you're kidding.
- Teacher How do I start??
- Bugscope Team you should see controls to the right
- Bugscope Team you can change mag
- Teacher ok

- Bugscope Team click to center is better than click to drive

- Bugscope Team you can also click on any of the presets (one click) to get the 'scope to drive to that place

- Teacher Moira's going to steer. :-)
- Bugscope Team so if something is OOF you can take the focus up or down
- 8:23am

- Bugscope Team this is the underside of the head of this larva

- Bugscope Team there is often a lot of debris on water critters
- Bugscope Team we see diatoms, sometimes
- Teacher Mo says it looks like he has a beard...are those hairs> setae?
- Bugscope Team yes those are setae
- Bugscope Team one of the water beetles has really cool ones
- Bugscope Team like a wispy goatee on a beatnik

- Bugscope Team this is bizarre

- Bugscope Team these are tarsi on a leafhopper
- Teacher What's bizarre?
- Bugscope Team and you can see a scale
- Teacher Tarsi being claws?

- Bugscope Team tarsi are the final four or five segments of the limbs, including the end with the claw
- Teacher Great...do you guys ever look at tardigrades (water bears)?

- Bugscope Team we imaged a bunch of tardigrades for NASA and put them on Virtual Microscope

- Teacher You did the ones for NASA???? Way cool!
- 8:28am
- Teacher Mo wants to know what that white speck is.
Bugscope Team hmm, not sure, maybe it's juju (dirt, grime, junk, stuff we aren't sure what it is...)
- Teacher LOL 'juju'! I'm going to start using that now. Must be a scientific term. :-D
- Bugscope Team we set Virtual Microscope up for NASA a few years ago and are planning to upgrade it -- we have a proposal with NSF in for that
- Bugscope Team we critical point dried your samples so they would retain most of their shape from when they were fresh. Otherwise, if they were air dried, they would shrink and probably not look so good. Anyways, some of those little fluffy things are a byproduct from critical point drying
- Bugscope Team Hi Moira!
- Guest Well, we're back...it's under Moira now, not BRAT.
- Bugscope Team hi moira, welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Team we gave you control again
- Bugscope Team if you want, you can log in as BRAT again, we fixd it
- 8:33am
- Guest Now we don't have access to the presets...we're a guest? I will log out and relog as BRAT. :-)
- Guest Wait, there they are....
- Bugscope Team wait!
- Bugscope Team good
- Bugscope Team we gave you control...
- Bugscope Team that means you should see the presets
- Bugscope Team Mojo wanted to know what the Juju was
- Guest i'm a begginer tiper so i'm slow
- Bugscope Team like me
- Guest really?
- Bugscope Team it takes me forever to get a sentence out
- Bugscope Team I am getting better
- Guest yeah i know how you feel.
- Bugscope Team be sure and try clicking on another preset

- Bugscope Team ha you beat me to it

- Bugscope Team you can see some of the armor now

- Guest neat looking

- Guest whats that spiral stick thing?
- Bugscope Team these are critters we are not very familiar with -- these larvae
- Guest okay

- 8:38am
- Bugscope Team it looks like some kind of membrane that has dried and shriveled
- Guest the thing in the center looks like a shirivaled wing
- Guest could be a membrain

- Bugscope Team if you click on the scale bar in the lower left, it'll tell you more detail about the microscope parameters
- Bugscope Team it does resemble a haltere, in a some ways
- Guest i need a minuet
- Guest brb
- Bugscope Team ok
- Guest i'm back
- 8:43am
- Bugscope Team I guess this is technically a nymph
- Bugscope Team welcome
- Bugscope Team the whole critter, at this stage in its lifecycle

- Bugscope Team this is cool
- Bugscope Team I like leafhoppers
- Guest i want to find out whats next to it
- Bugscope Team its eyes are streamlined into the side of its bullet-shaped head

- Bugscope Team that is another larva

- Bugscope Team the one we think is a stonefly larva
- Bugscope Team you can see it has six legs
- Bugscope Team yeah a lot of these look like hellgrammites
- Guest mabey a caddisfly out of its home
- Bugscope Team actually it looks like there are lots of different larvae called hellgrammites

- Bugscope Team I am sorry we are not very good with aquatic insects -- we don't see them that often

- Bugscope Team this is the tip of the abdomen, and you can see two cerci
- Guest we vote caddisfly freeswiming or out of home
- 8:49am
- Bugscope Team sounds good to me
- Guest Kelly here; do you remember finding a little casing or tube made out of tiny pebbles?
Bugscope Team I don't remember seeing anything like that when I dried your samples...
- Guest Or made out of plant material?
- Bugscope Team maybe I missed it
- Guest Okay; I'll go look for the tally sheets from the kids that tells us what we found that day, see if I can come up with any ideas before folks log on. :-)
- Guest Controls back to MoJo...
- Bugscope Team we've looked at caddisflies, stoneflies, and mayflies before, but we have trouble keeping them straight
- Bugscope Team and there are different species
- Guest okay
- Bugscope Team we have seen the kind that build little rock cocoons around themselve
- Bugscope Team s
- Bugscope Team be sure to cruise to some other presets
- Guest "rock cocoons" are the caddisflys
- Bugscope Team right
- Guest they are the contractors of the river
- Bugscope Team we can learn something today
- Guest he he he
- Guest heeeeey is this the butt of the bug?
- Guest yeah
- Guest a cadisfly
- Bugscope Team yes this is the butt of one on the insects
- Guest hi

- Student its a grasshopper head
- Guest that scary
- Teacher can we have a closer look at the antenae
- Student i thik so tiger
- Guest what is a compound eye?
- Guest idk is it
- Guest welll that is so cool riches
- Bugscope Team insects don't have internal bones, so they would just turn into blobs if it wasn't for the hard outer shell called an exoekeleton
- Guest cool
- Guest What's that, jagged edge in the middle, that looks broken?
Bugscope Team we are at high mag, so it is hard to tell just what it is -- it is some kind of malformation in the cuticle on the head
Bugscope Team looks like part of the exoskeleton is cracked?
- Guest i am
- Guest thats cool
- Guest ok ms cal well type slower
- Guest hey deven
- Guest i swear i dident break it!
- Guest so what exactly is tat supose to be?????
- Guest It Is A Grasshopper?

- Guest whats up devin?
- Student nm u?
- Guest is it dead?
- Student Do grasshoppers have skin pores?
Bugscope Team nope, they don't have skin, they have an exoskeleton
- Guest What is a compound eye?
- Guest 'Where are its eyes?'
Bugscope Team to the north-west
- Student i hoope its deaad
- Guest it's not a grasshopper head
Bugscope Team it is the head but you are at high mag

- Guest I Didnt Think They Had Skin Pores...
Bugscope Team they have spiracles that they breathe through]
- Guest is that a grasshopper head
- Guest What kind of bug is that
- Student Are tose skin flakes?

- Student long*
- Guest Thats Really Weird Looking...
- Student the eye doesn't have a pupil?
- Student whos going to the dance
- Student is that the ead?
- Bugscope Team the compound eye is made up of hundreds of individual facets, called ommatidia
- Student head*
- Guest z man!!!!!
- Student thats a ugly grasshopper head
- Guest why dont insects have skin
Bugscope Team they have their skeleton on the outside -- an exoskeleton
- Guest whats the difference between a compound eye and our normal eye
Bugscope Team a compound eye has hundreds of individual lens's each inside its own facet called ommatidia. those lens's are stuck in one position. human eyes have lens's that can move around to get a better angle of view.
- Guest it has like little legs in its mouth aka mandibles
- Student THIS IS A GRASS HOPPER HEAD
- Guest it is so awsome yes yes it is
- Guest this is cool
- Guest they have skin because they have to keep things in
- Guest i thought they had little hari
- Guest hey devin
- Guest hi
- Student how lond does it take to make a grass hopper
- Guest hye
- Teacher are their any sensory hairs on antanae
Bugscope Team you could drive to it and look to see
- Student The eyes just look flat and round
- Student what is up
- Guest this is wierd
- Guest how do they grow hair out of the exoskeleton?
Bugscope Team good question! the hair (called setae) actually stick THROUGH the exoskeleton and attach to nerves underneath
- Guest gies lets talkkkk about this thing
- Guest Yes.
- Student yeah listen to person
- Guest is it dead
Bugscope Team yes it is dead, and it is coated with gold-palladium, and it is inside the vacuum chamber in an electron microscope
- Student is it dead

- Guest idk the hop in the grass
- Guest OK
- Guest ewwwww
- Guest this is a picture
Bugscope Team these are live images from an electron microscope
- Student do they have any form of teeth?
Bugscope Team they have hardened mandibles
- Guest hey mrs cal what is this
- Student Do they lay eggs?
- Guest idk
- Student Its skin sorta looks like armor
Bugscope Team it is a lot like a suit of armor! We often compare it to that. That's why insects have so many hairs. Without it, they would be fumbling around in their armor, unable to feel what's going on.
- Guest it look likes a leg sticking out of its head
Bugscope Team those are palps
Bugscope Team well, not a leg, those are mandibles
- Bugscope Team they do not have teeth
- Guest wow dude they just are k
- Guest is it a grass hopper
- Guest yeah ur rifgth
- Guest 'what are those things that look like legs?'

Bugscope Team um, no, not really
