- Bugscope Team hi, welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Team Good morning!
- Bugscope Team This is a water bug
- Bugscope Team nice to see you
- Bugscope Team welcoming you to the session
- Bugscope Team let us know when you have questions
- Bugscope Team hi kids, welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Team and let us know if you would like us to give a certain person control of the microscope
- Bugscope Team right now IMS has the ability to drive
- Bugscope Team right now IMS has control of the scope, we can give control to anyone who is logged in, mrs. coyle, just let us know when to switch control
- Bugscope Team you may choose from among the presets to the right of this chat
- Bugscope Team feel free to ask any questions, we are here to help you run your bugscope session
- Bugscope Team we are here to answer questions about the insects, or the microscope, or other things
- Bugscope Team okay, now scott is moving the scope a bit
- Bugscope Team this is a close-up of the abdomen of a water bug
- Bugscope Team we think a water boatman, but maybe it's a different kind of water bug
- 8:13am
- Bugscope Team can you all see this chat? minimum resolution required is 1024x768

- Bugscope Team we're driving, a bit, just to show you what you can do
- Student whats up
- Student wasup
- Bugscope Team hey N3il!
- Teacher what type of bug is this?

- Student hey
- Bugscope Team this is a water bug
- Bugscope Team this is a water bug
- Bugscope Team we think a water boatman, but we aren't 100% sure
- Bugscope Team it is a true bug, however
- Bugscope Team you can tell by its piercing mouthparts
- Student hello
- Bugscope Team notice the eyes on either side of its head

- Bugscope Team cool, this is the tongue of the water boatman

- Bugscope Team if you zoom in on the head, you'll see more detail
- Bugscope Team these are all live controls of an electron microscope
- Bugscope Team we can control for you if you prefer?
- Bugscope Team insects have really amazing features when you look at them under a high powered microscope
- Student hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Bugscope Team hey there, how's it going?
- Bugscope Team okay, so i'm going to zoom in on the bugs face

- 8:18am
- Bugscope Team notice how hairy the bug is. all bugs have TONS of these hairs.
- Bugscope Team the hairs are not really hairs, but setae (pronounced see-tee)
- Bugscope Team setae stick through the insect's exoskeleton, to nerves underneath, and that is how they sense their environment
- Bugscope Team an aphid looks a lot like this

- Bugscope Team but this is a water big

- Bugscope Team okay, so i had locked the session to control it, but now i just unlocked brenda, you should be able to click on a preset and the scope will move to that bug
- Bugscope Team brenda, can you see this chat?
- Bugscope Team let us know when you have any questions.
- Bugscope Team you can see there are a lot of hairs on this insect
- Bugscope Team brenda, i'm wondering if you can't see this chat? i'm going to move to another insect

- Bugscope Team this is the compound eye of a flying insect
- 8:24am

- Bugscope Team this is the compound eye of an insect we could not identify -- some kind of fly

- Bugscope Team yes it is possible your screen resolution is not set up to work with this

- Bugscope Team we can tell you how to change it if you cannot see the whole interface

- Bugscope Team please feel free to ask us questions!
Bugscope Team brenda, we are not sure you can see all the chat below the image, so i'm putting this question up on the left. your screen resolution needs to be minimum of 1024x768 to see all the chat and presets. do you see it?

- Student cool
Bugscope Team yeah, this is a fly head

- Bugscope Team brenda, you zoomed out, it seems like?
- Bugscope Team often when insects have been collected in a trap, we find scales from some of them on other insects that normally would not have scales
- Bugscope Team moths, butterflies, silverfish, mosquitos, and very few weevils/beetles have scales

- Bugscope Team in the background you can see little craters in the carbon doublestick tape we used to hold the insects onto the stage
- Bugscope Team okay, i'm going to move the scope to another preset now

- Bugscope Team this is the claw of a flying insect
- 8:29am

- Bugscope Team these are live images of dead insects

- Bugscope Team but the scope can zoom into 30,000-40,000 x!

- Bugscope Team cool,! we are moving, click again to stop moving brenda!
- Bugscope Team nice!
- Bugscope Team there ya go!!!

- Bugscope Team now we are getting somewhere

- Bugscope Team okay, so see all those hairs, those are the setae

- Bugscope Team pronounced see-tee
- Bugscope Team the electron beam rasters across whichever area you choose, and the primary electrons from then electron beam cause what are called secondary electrons to be ejected from the surface of the sample. Those secondary electrons provide the signal that makes up the images we see

- Bugscope Team the setae can sense touch, taste, smell, temp, etc. they can be mechanosensory and chemosensory, at least.

- Bugscope Team when something looks overly bright, it may be because it is charging up with electrons -- they are not able to run to ground

- Bugscope Team insects have TONS of setae on them, that really helps them to survive

- Bugscope Team this is the abdomen of this insect, which is some sort of wasp or fly -- in this case we are not sure
- Bugscope Team if you click on preset #9 you can see setae on a fly proboscis, that's what it uses to taste the food that it easts. of course food being fly puke mixed with bug guts. yum!
- Teacher I can see the preset but that is it, I can
- Bugscope Team if you click on preset no. 18 you will be able to see a tick. there are lots of samples on the stub today
- 8:34am
- Teacher I cannot click on anything
Bugscope Team hmm, maybe try refreshing your browser window (F5), that might help

- Bugscope Team there must be some reason it does not work for you, and if we cannot figure that out right away, please just ask us to go to any preset you'd like
- Bugscope Team this is brave of you to launch into this with no warning
- Bugscope Team this is the body of a hard tick
- Bugscope Team you can see its head at the top
- Bugscope Team if you give me your direct phone line, i can call you and try to step you through some of the clicking problems
- Bugscope Team the head is called the 'capitulum,' and the pieces on the side fold down when it 'bites.'
- Bugscope Team oh, okay, now i fixed it, you had logged in as IMS, which was now gone, so i moved control to brenda
- Bugscope Team now you should have control again
- Bugscope Team Presently Brenda has control.
- Bugscope Team hi Wyatt!
- Bugscope Team me has control now
- Teacher This is not working for us, so we are clicking
- Teacher off
