- Student wat up tamara
- Student soo scott this is a spider right?
Bugscope Team we are on the scorpion claw i believe
- Student cool
- Bugscope Team justin and taliq, drive away, you are controlling a $750,000 microscope
- Student hey luz....=)
- Student sorry 4 the repaet
Bugscope Team no problem, it happens
- Student ohh cool
- Student alex is your job hard like hard hard
Bugscope Team well, sometimes it is, but it's also cool. you get to figure things out and that can be very satifying

- Student what are you doing
- Student wat iz yr deegree of intrest
Bugscope Team I am an entomologist, Alex is a systems administrator, Scott and Cate are microscopists--although they have degrees in different subjects
- Bugscope Team yes we had moved to the scorp claw, now we're back on the spider
- Student how old is the bugscope
Bugscope Team microscope is 11; bugscope the project is slightly -- a few months -- younger
- 2:44pm
- Student what is that
- Student Is the poison dry??
Bugscope Team yes by now

- Student were does that bug comes from

- Student soo how long does it take to put the bugs on correctly
Bugscope Team takes about 30-40 minutes maybe, at mot

- Student ?
- Student annie do you know what this is
Bugscope Team This is a very close up look at a spider

- Student what is that stuff on the on the claws

- Bugscope Team most
- Student Where did you find most of your spiders Scot?
- Student wow
- Student hih
- Student wat is this
- Student hi

- Student wat up edgar
- Bugscope Team you can see a strand of mold spores there
- Student oh thanks

- Student hi
- Student yes

- Student hi8
- Student watz that weird looking thing?
- Student wat up
- Student yeah

- Student hi
- Student what is these
- Student hi

- Bugscope Team this is a spider
- Bugscope Team you can see the fangs

- Bugscope Team all those hairs are setae (see-tee)
- Student is this a fang
Bugscope Team yup, you can see the fangs criss crossed in the upper middle portion of the screen
- Student o thax Scot
- Bugscope Team setae help insects to sense their enviornment
- Student what is that
- Student what bug is this
Bugscope Team Not a bug at all..this is a spider
- Student wat is that hiry thing?
- Bugscope Team spider

- Student how much is the microscope
Bugscope Team $600,000 to $750,000, as Alex said.
- Bugscope Team sometimes when insects/arthropods die, especially if they have been gassed somehow, they throw up
- Student oh yeah
- Student r those the bugs
- Student cool

- Bugscope Team insects have a hard outer shell, called an exoskeleton. those hairs stick through the exoskeleton, to nerves underneath
- Student hi tamara

- Student wow a wasp stinger

- Teacher is that a sheath on the stinger?
Bugscope Team not sure maybe take the mag down a bit

- Student what is that?
Bugscope Team the little balls are mold spores and some of the other stuff is some sort of dirt or gunk
- Student are those mold spores
- Student alex do you know what the pieces on the stinger are?
Bugscope Team they are either mold or pollen, i think that is mold, pollen is more spikey
- Student ?
- Student was it hard to cut the bugs
Bugscope Team Insects are generally not hard to cut apart, unless you want very neat pieces, in which case they are really hard to cut apart. Pulling legs and wings off it easy
- Student i am beside u
- Student How much money do you guys get paid??
- Student what is that?
- Student is that mold on it
Bugscope Team yes that's right
- Student is that a spider
- Student is that bacteria?
- Student looks gross

- Student what is your favorite bug
Bugscope Team hi obama, great to have you on bugscope! i like mites, they are like bugs on bugs...
Bugscope Team My favorite insects are longhorned beetles, but we don't have any of those to view today
- Bugscope Team yes, those little balls are mold spores
- Student thanks
- Student oh i got it right
- Student that is really cool
- Student what do you use to cute the bugs
- 2:49pm
- Student its pretty amazing wat u can see with this microscope
Bugscope Team totally

- Student did you cut any bugs
- Student what is that?
- Student wat is that we are looking at?

- Student awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
- Student cooool

- Student cate do you like working with bugs
- Teacher sorry annie, no long horns this time. last time we did
- Student wat is that???

- Student no!
- Student how many bugs do you get in one day?

- Student how long it took to get the bugs ready
Bugscope Team oh, maybe 20-30 minutes
- Bugscope Team some things weren't discovered until someone looked at them in an electron microscope. brochosomes, for example, were totally unknown until someone looked at them in an electron microscope
- Student is that juju
- Student so alex how u seen any bugs with diease's
Bugscope Team well, yes, mosquitos are a very bad carrier of disease
Bugscope Team Is is generally difficult to tell if an insect has a disease unless they die or you dissect them and look at their blood.
- Student my are ants
- Student wat is juju alex
Bugscope Team juju is just a nickname for junk, dirt, stuff like that
- Student wat are those bals
- Student juju is trash duh duh taliq

- Student Lol juju = junk GUYS!
- Student JuJu is junk? ewww
- Student oh

- Teacher please give control to boogalaboo

- Student nastyyyyy
- Student stop askign wat is juju plz

- Student who is thamber
- Student okay
- Bugscope Team boogalaboo, you are driving. put your seat belts on!
- Student wat is that?
- Student why do they look so wavey?
- Bugscope Team we don't look at insects/arthropods all of the time. most of the time people are using the microscope for their own research, with carbon nanotubes, flexible silicon, self-healing polymers -- all kinds of stuff
- Student which bug are you scare of
Bugscope Team centipedes
- Student haha
- Student spiders
- Student tell me the truth
- Student that was pic is cool

- Student hi thamber?
- Bugscope Team like, big centipedes
- Student no coakaroches ewwwwwwwwwww
- Student is it still the wasp stinger Scot?
Bugscope Team yes this is the stinger
- Student who is who
- Student are some bugs scary
Bugscope Team I guess it depends on what you consider scary. Some people would think that insects that carry diseases are scary, other people might think insects that sting are scary.
- Student i think centipeede are cool
- Bugscope Team yes, this is a wasp stinger
- Student How long have you guys been doing this??
Bugscope Team 10+ years, close to 11
- Student wat bug was the biggest
Bugscope Team lobsters
- Student Cool!

- Student is it scary to cut things
- Student like bugs

- Student do you know what this is?
- Student what is this?
- Student wat is thAT
- Student do u guys like doing this?
Bugscope Team yes this is fun

- Student what is this

- Bugscope Team this is the wasp stinger, from further away
- Student i thought lobsters are animals
Bugscope Team lobsters are animals, but they are crustaceans, not insects. Rolypolys (or pillbugs) are also crustaceans
- Student which animal uses that stinger??
- Student I DONT
- Student yes
- Student JKJKJHKJKKJ
- Student were are you right now
- Student Alex, wich bug was the smallest?
Bugscope Team the smallest insect is a fairyfly, which is a type of wasp
- 2:54pm

- Student has there ever been a problem with the microscope befor?
Bugscope Team oh yeah; it is a complicated piece of equipment
- Bugscope Team SCOTTT

- Student is that a wasp stinger
Bugscope Team this is the scorpion stinger
- Bugscope Team Lobsters are not insects. Lobsters are crustaceans
- Student wat are the little circles on that bug
Bugscope Team that is where setae have fall out (setae are the little hairs on insects
- Bugscope Team Annie doesn't think lobsters are insects.
- Student why is this partly hairy?
Bugscope Team lots of insects/arthropods have hair (setae, bristles, trichae, spines)
- Student Really? cool Cate
- Student i think they are
- Student jk scot
- Student hi obama
- Student is a lobster really a bug
Bugscope Team Annie is right. Lobsters are not insects.
- Student what is that?
- Student really hairy
- Student thanks cate
- Student thx 4 answer our question
- Bugscope Team Lobsters do not have six legs, two antenna, or two sets of wings...they do not qualify as insects
- Student IT"S A ME MARIO!!!
- Student wat animal has had the biggest eyes you guys have handeled
- Student Wich bug was the hariest?
Bugscope Team It is impossible to know, really. Most insects are completely covered in hairs, many different sizes of hairs...so I don't know if anyone would be able to calculate which is the hairiest bug.
- Student annie is good
- Student omg edgar
- Student thank you!
- Student she knows alot
- Student do you like bugs?
Bugscope Team I think all of us like bugs now. They are different life forms but endlessly interesting.
- Student ooo it doesn't sound like it'sn a stinger
- Student to us
- Student hi jami
- Student i do
- Student what are those hairs 4??
Bugscope Team those are likely sensory hairs
- Bugscope Team Thanks Justin and Taliq
- Student hey mr.m
- Student ok Annie
- Student who re u
- Student thats kool
- Student sorry this computer iz slowwww
- Student k
- Student your welcome
- Student mr.m
- Bugscope Team Mr M you have control now.
- Student what animal has the biggest eyes
Bugscope Team That is another difficult question...has to be a whale.
- Student Godfather, sup?

- Student how moch do they pay you
- 2:59pm
- Student wat is the scorpion injecting his stinger in?
- Student annie what is the smallest insect
- Bugscope Team maybe not such a difficult question actually
- Bugscope Team giant squid
- Student hi
- Student Do you guys ever have problems where the comp. lags or sumfin?
Bugscope Team yes, we do. I am using Safari, which helps
- Student ok
- Bugscope Team whale or giant squid?
- Student who are u obama
- Student who is scot??
- Student are those worms
Bugscope Team No the sort of wormy things are more setae
- Student in a giant squid
- Student so did u hagve difficulties when u were putting the bugs in the staple?
Bugscope Team when we prepare samples for bugscope, we attach them to an aluminum disk that has carbon tape on it. We usually stick them on with their undersides facing up (because they are usually more interesting on that side). Sometimes it is difficult putting on samples because they won't lie right
- Student e
- Student Crpto138 says hi to all
- Student you are a very good person annie
Bugscope Team why thank you. I am getting a little pep talk today. I am go and do my work and feel good about myself ;)
- Bugscope Team I think giant squids have the largest diameter eyes.
- Student alex, annie, scot, cate how has it been to work with alot of bugs and the $700,000 microscope?
Bugscope Team It has been fun. Answering Bugscope questions makes me think about insects in different ways so that I can explain them to students....and I like that.
- Teacher we are having a little trouble driving. i clicked click to center and the drive area is blank

- Student Scot if you were to decide would you be a flying bug or a walking bug??
Bugscope Team Probably, since I don't do much flying now, it would be flying.

- Student are those hairs
- Student do you know any thing on sun scorpine
Bugscope Team What about them specifically?
- Student Dante said it!!
- Bugscope Team Mr M try refreshing your browser.
- Student what is that
- Student do you talk spanish
Bugscope Team solo un poquito
- Bugscope Team this is the thick base of the scorpion stinger

- Student pliz

- Student What type of bug would you want to be Alex?
- Student Do you guys ever get frusturated when handiling the MES?
Bugscope Team I think it is much easier controlling the SEM in person than using the bugscope controls, because sometimes there is lag over the internet, but in general I don't get frustrated. It's fun!

- Student claro k si
- Student like do you know if it has any stingers or claws
- Bugscope Team thamber the messages go by so fast we miss them sometimes
- Student what is that scot?
Bugscope Team Dude I am not sure where we are myself.
- Student What is that?
- Student so what is this we are looking at and i like this experiment its fun :))
- Student this is mr. miller, please give contol to andy and cindy
Bugscope Team right.
- Student did u have any difficulties while putting the bugs in the scope?
Bugscope Team The only difficulty I had was choosing which of your insects would be best to use because you had so many and some of them were big so I had to decide if there were parts I could use
- Student is that paper
- Bugscope Team Some times I have sun scorpions in my back yard or in my insect traps. I really like sun scorpions
- Student or is it sort of hair?
- 3:04pm
- Student Is the tip of the stinger sheding??
- Student wow annie
- Student does that look like plstic 2 u?
Bugscope Team it does!

- Student I found one in my back yard.
Bugscope Team a sun scorpion?
- Student hi tamara
- Student is thata tongue
Bugscope Team yes, called a 'glossa'
- Teacher i got kicked out somehow. please give control to andy and cindy
Bugscope Team got it, sorry I did not believe you when you were Obama
- Student wats that
- Student the face of it
- Student thats cool
- Student do you guys get sad when you have to pack it up???
- Student hi jami
- Student is that a spider
- Student wat has been the most hardest bug to prepare for the microscope
- Student Alex,Scot,Cate,Annie do you guys catch bugs yourself?
Bugscope Team yes for sure. Alex catches them with his motorcycle helmet
Bugscope Team I catch bugs myself. It is my job!
- Student ooooo thx for the awnser
- Student yes.
Bugscope Team The aren't really scorpions, you know...they are not spiders either...they are their own order of arachnids
- Student can u zoom in on the eyes
- Student what kind of eyes
Bugscope Team compound eyes

- Student Eww
- Student It looks like a spider cuz its all furry
Bugscope Team hey man this is a digger wasp

- Student Wait do you mean like riding his bike or using his helmet as a net?
- Student wat r those hairs on it tong
- Student Do you guys ever find some leavings inside the bug
Bugscope Team like what? we have seen muscle attachments but usually don't look inside

- Student this iz dat a fly
Bugscope Team it's a wasp
- Student .,m,m,ljlkljklklklkll;l./

- Student what is that?
- Student is that where they eat
- Student what has been the hardest bug to prepare for the microscope??
Bugscope Team the super hairy ones are the hardest, like moths, some flies
- Student hi people
- Student hi angy

- Student hello these is sooooo fun
- Student Is'nt there a wasp bigger then the stub??
Bugscope Team yes a cicada killer, for example
Bugscope Team Um, there are some hornets that would be much bigger than the stub

- Student oh its pollen
- 3:09pm

- Student This is pollen? wow
Bugscope Team pollen comes in lots of shapes, and sometimes it is hard to tell mold spores from pollen. but generally mold spores are smaller, less spikey, and they often deflate
- Student the bug has cut right
- Student sorry mistake
- Teacher you can identify plants by the shape of the pollen
Bugscope Team There are some people who can. I hope to learn someday.
- Student scot how long have u worked in the bugscope ?

- Student hehehe
- Student does the microscope ever heat up
- Teacher please give control back to boogalaboo
- Student does the bug have cuts
- Student what kind of bug do you get alot of
Bugscope Team ladybugs, flies
- Student is that juju
- Student hey mr.m can we have the control back!!!!
- Student Cate,Scot,Annie,Alex are any of you allergic to pollen or other small organisms??
Bugscope Team not me, just salicylic acid (aspirin)
Bugscope Team I am allergic to various pollens, but usually it doesn't affect my field work. The last time I was in Arizona, my allergies were really bad though!
- Student ha thamber
- Student hey transformers
- Student wat
- Student hi
- Student do you get centipeed
Bugscope Team sometimes. once we got a huge one that scared me so much I dropped it. it was cool, though, had mites
- Student Witch bug had the most juju?
- Student hihello

- Student were our bugs some of the coolest
Bugscope Team yes
- Student yes
- Student is that a mouth
- Student kool pic
- Student what bug is the bigest
Bugscope Team Goliath Beetle is one of the largest bugs. There are also super long walking sticks in the Tropics
- Student thx

- Student how is it working wit bugscope?
Bugscope Team It is lots of fun
- Student is mthat venom

- Student scot wat has been ur favorite bug u guys have looked at
Bugscope Team I like ticks, mosquitos, mites, earwigs because they have mites, and weevils because they are so cute

- Student my friend bob and larry brought this in?
- Student what are some of the best bugs you ever had?
- Student is that a nose
- Student what is that ?
- Student wat r those bumps
- Teacher what are those two bumps
Bugscope Team eyes
- Student is it a head
- Student what is the smallest bug
Bugscope Team we have told people in the past it was a fairy fly, or maybe that is the smallest insect, to be correct

- Student what wioth the bumpes?
- Student thamber what is your favorite bug

- Teacher please give control to edgar and al
Bugscope Team have fun edgar and al
- Student have you guys ever caught an assasin bug before???
Bugscope Team we've caught many assassin bugs. They have a goofy looking head that is fun to look at with the SEM
- Student good!
- Student can u imagine having eyes that small
- Student alex wat is that?
- 3:14pm
- Student scot what are we lookinq at
Bugscope Team head of the scorpion
- Student How are those eyes?

- Student tight

- Student wat r simple eyes
Bugscope Team simple eyes are single eyes, not compound -- so they have one lens. and often their possessors do not see well out of them
- Bugscope Team Fairyfly is right---it is the smallest insect
- Student ohhhh thanksz
- Bugscope Team you can see they are covered with mold spores

- Bugscope Team Thanks, Annie!
- Student ewewewewewewweeewwwewewewewewewewewew

- Student whats tight?

- Student wat up
- Student what is that
- Student how does da fairy fly luk like annie
Bugscope Team Not like much....they are practically microscopic. The look like a tiny fleck of dust. When you look at them under the microscope, they are black wasps with feathery wings.
- Student what is a fairyfly

- Bugscope Team these are mold spores
- Student What are we looking at?

- Student wat is this scot?

- Student wat do those bumps do?

- Student what is the scorpians niche?

- Student sorry our computers are slow
- Bugscope Team you are doing fine, good job!
- Student where does this animal live and it's niche?
- Student wat iz that bugs niche

- Student are those hairs
Bugscope Team yes, the hair looking things are actually called setae (see-tee), they help bugs to sense their environment

- Bugscope Team these eyes are a bit dried out -- they would have been puffed up when the scorp was alive

- Student wat up thamber

- Student scot wat is the scorpians niche
Bugscope Team I really don't know, I'm sorry. We don't have them here.
Bugscope Team Scorpions are predators. They usually eat moderate sized insects, like crickets. Some can eat larger things like lizards and baby mice and birds.

- Student do you no the camal spider
Bugscope Team Yes, that common name is also given to sun scorpions. Sun scorpions=Camel spider

- Student thats cool

- Student what is that

- Student hi
- Student hey transformers

- Student is that dirt

- Student What are we looking at Scot?
Bugscope Team I am lost.

- Student who is numebr one

- Student if u put a poison type spider on the mircoscope is it posable to see poison
Bugscope Team probably not, especially since these insects are under a vacuum, so there would have to be no moisture to get to a vacuum
- Student ok thaz do
- Bugscope Team bob and larry, you are the bosses at the controls
- 3:20pm
- Student have you got a camal spider yet
Bugscope Team I have seen and encountered many sun scorpions/camel spiders. I think we have looked at them for Bugscope, but I don't remember
- Bugscope Team click to stop
- Teacher thanks
- Bugscope Team click to stop
- Bugscope Team bob, larry, click again to stop
- Student thank you mr.m
- Student **thax**

- Guest What are those holes?
Bugscope Team those are various pores in the antenna
- Bugscope Team i have no idea? scott, cate, annie?
- Bugscope Team they are likely chemoreceptors
- Bugscope Team And I should know what they do specifically, but I cannot seem to recall at this moment. I believe that the wasp uses these little impressed "hairs" to sense volatile compounds in the air--to smell
- Bugscope Team Placoid sensilla are so cool.
- Bugscope Team often they are elongate
- 3:30pm
- Bugscope Team we saw some this morning when Jim Whitfield came in with his tiny wasps.
- Bugscope Team hello Anvic!

Bugscope Team have fune abc123. you have control
- Bugscope Team xyz 1098, you've got control
- Student hi
- Bugscope Team is that a Jackson 5 song?
- Student what dose it do
Bugscope Team they work much like our hands. inside the tarsus is a tendon that pulls to open the claw, pushes to close, called an unguitractor
- Student are does white things hairs
Bugscope Team well, not hairs like ours, they are called setae (see-tee), and they help insects to sense their environment

- Student is that a ant lion
- Student wats that
- Student does bite
- Student does it look like a lion
Bugscope Team Antlions get their names from the fact that they have large fierce jaws and they eat lots of ants.
- Student to pro tect its self
- Teacher what are those small arm like projections?
- Student why does the mouth look like that ?

- Student what is in the mouth
- Student butterfly

- Teacher did the head fall off?

- Student wat is in the mouth
- Bugscope Team It looks like the head is gone.
- Bugscope Team That is very sad
- Student what is in it mouth

Bugscope Team Candy we are sorry. It fell off but sometimes it is hard to tell until you get a sample into the microscope.

- Student wat does it look so2oo3 poky
- Student it's not as hairy as the other 1
- Student grossssss
- Student hey who whants to f that
- Bugscope Team antlions grow up to be owlflies, if they feel like it
Bugscope Team Nooooo...owlflies grow to be owlflies. Antlions grow to be antlions. They look the same but they are not
- Student is that a tube on the side
Bugscope Team I think it is a hole where it had been pinned.
- Student that looks like a tunnal on the right bottom
- Student can you move the scream ????????????????
- Student thats cool

Bugscope Team And lace wing larvae look like antlions too...sort of
- Student are those hairs connected to each side

Bugscope Team on a much smaller scale ;)

- Student is it a scorpion claw

- Student wat is it
- Student what are the bumps

- Student can you zoom in
- Student thats ugly
- Student it looks like it pokes
Bugscope Team it is a stinger, so you are correct!
- Student what are those bumps on the stinger
Bugscope Team i think those are mold spores

- Student y know

- Student you
- Student is it a stinger
- Student hi people are u guys grossed oout ?
Bugscope Team I was grossed out by the headless antlion
- Student is his hair dirty
Bugscope Team I would not want to eat it.
- Student we are
- Student it looks like it is puking
- Student Loook like wood hanging
- 3:55pm
- Student whats that
- Student is it a flying stingerb on a flying insect
- Student wat are the hairs for
Bugscope Team the things that look like hairs are various kinds of setae, or bristles. they are often sensory -- touch, or taste, or hot/cold, for example
- Student is that his mouth
- Student i think thats it keeep stinging over a dn over

- Student ya us to
- Student no me digas
- Student it looks like mushroom
- Student what
- Student what is that
- Student do you guys touch the bugs
Bugscope Team sometimes
- Student do the hairs protect him
- Student no one know
- Student how does it look like a mushroom ?. . .. just asking
Bugscope Team I think that this is just the angle of the wasps abdomen in this shot...but it kind of looked like a giant mushroom
- Student are they clean

- Student what is that
- Student what
- Student what do the do
- Student lolo\
- Student ?
- Student ?
- Student what are those things
- Student Looks like seeds on the ground
Bugscope Team they are pollen grains, so in a way they are much like seeds
- Student ???????????
- Student wat is that on the bottom
Bugscope Team you mean the background? it's the wasp's cuticle - the exoskeleton, whichever part of the body we are on
- Student what is it
- Student se parese a ti
- Student are those stickey
Bugscope Team They are slightly sticky--they are very small so you would probably not know they were on you
- Student they look like tennis ball
- Student that looks really gross to be on an animal ! but it also looks like rocks
- Student who has control
Bugscope Team abc5
- Student ab5
Bugscope Team yeah sorry
- Student you
- Student wat is it
- Student those look like eggs
- Student are those eggs
Bugscope Team pollen grains

- Student why does it have pollen on it
Bugscope Team The wasp probably feeds on pollen and nectar and some of the pollen rubbed off on its body
- Student oooo polen
- 4:00pm
- Student eewwww that looks wiered is that fuzz ?
- Student i dont no
- Bugscope Team this is now a closeup view of the spider fang with a poison pore
- Teacher please give control to transformersloverz
- Student wats on the bottom of the screen
- Student why does it need pollen
Bugscope Team It needs pollen like I need ice cream cones--to eat!! ;)
- Student are those bones
- Student what is that
Bugscope Team This is a close up look at one of the spider fangs.
- Student yo ke
- Student a
- Student looks like an air plane
- Bugscope Team he who loves transformers, you are driving!!!
- Student oh cool
- Bugscope Team spiders inject venom into their prey that dissolves them from the inside
- Student thats flyin
- Student se te ba
- Student digo yo k ya se callen
- Student it look like rocks
- Teacher is that hole where the poison comes out
Bugscope Team yes! good thining
- Student what is that
- Bugscope Team thinking

- Student how is the poison pore work
Bugscope Team The spider pumps blood into the part of the body that operates the fangs---and venom comes out.

- Student what is it
- Bugscope Team this is a spider fang, very close up
- Student is that a poisen hole on the top thing

- Student are those little hair
Bugscope Team those hairs are called setae

- Bugscope Team you can see the pore where the poison comes out of the fang
- Student wats on the top right
- Student why does it have bumps

- Student look like dead skin
- Student can you zoom in
- Student awww thats cool
- Student are those websbs
Bugscope Team mostly what we see is some kind of dried fluid

- Student heyy lol i like ice cream tooooo !
- Student it looks ugly
- Student iull that looks all gui

- Student °
- Student cool
- Student that looks like teeth
Bugscope Team in a way it is exactly that -- two fangs
- Student y are they hairy
Bugscope Team for sure
- Bugscope Team the hairs we see are sensory hairs that spiders have, in particular, that help them sense vibration
- Student it looks like the inside of a pumpkin a little bit from the centererer
Bugscope Team yeah they look funny, but actually vicious, from that perspective
- Student =)

- Student who is cereal
- Student the both of you
- Student wats that
- Student what is that
- Student whis that a stinger
Bugscope Team This is the stinger of a scorpion
- Student y is it fiat
- Bugscope Team this is a scorpion stinger
- Student oh no you didnt

- Student wats on the bottom of the screen
- Student whats peeling of at the very end
Bugscope Team It is hard to know. It might be some dried venom or some other kind of dry fluid
- 4:05pm
- Student thats cool
- Student o wow
- Student why is it hary
Bugscope Team well, insects use those hairs (setae) to sense their environment, so you'll find setae all over insects, all over the place

- Student is it a stinger
- Student you with
- Student you wish
- Student omg
- Bugscope Team the hairs we see now are likely sensory; they would let the scorpion now when something had touched its stinger, or when the stinger had touched something
- Student is it a stinger on a tail

- Student y is it cut off
Bugscope Team sometimes they break off, and especially after they die

- Student are those hairs
- Student wat do the hairs do
- Student why does it have ahir on the tail

- Student i meant hair
- Student whats that
- Student why are there holes
Bugscope Team the holes are where the setae (hairs) used to be
- Bugscope Team remember, insects don't have skin like humans do, they have an exoskeleton which is hard and can't feel things. those hairs (setae) stick through the exoskeleton to nerves underneath, and that's how they feel things
- Bugscope Team they also smell with setae as well
Bugscope Team and taste!

- Student why are some places not covered with hair
Bugscope Team it looks like it needed only a few hairs on the stinger, but many of them were/are long

- Student wat is this

- Teacher please give candy control
Bugscope Team got it
- Student is that a patato
Bugscope Team hahahaha noooo....we are still on the scorpion stinger
- Student what is it
- Student besides the hair it looks like nopales
Bugscope Team little more rounded than nopales, but there is a strong similarity
- Student ha ha
- Student k feo
- Student annie . . . . . .

- Bugscope Team yes....
- Student what are the holes
- Student ewww it looks round
- Bugscope Team if you look at the micron bar in the lower left of the viewing screen you get an idea of the lengths of some of the things we are imaging.

- Student verdad
- Student is that juju
- Student wats on the tippy top
- Bugscope Team 1 um = one micron, that's one millionth of a meter
- Student look like a crashed up airplane
- Student r those eggsb and a stinger
Bugscope Team mold spores and the stinger
- Student what is on it
- Student without wings

- Student is that dirt
- 4:10pm

- Student i see you juju
- Student no
- Student what is it
- Student whats that shell
Bugscope Team it does look like the stinger had a sheath of some sort
- Student hi
- Student y r they holes
- Student around it
- Student no
- Student ??

- Student hi d.e.y
- Student whats that shell around it
Bugscope Team The stinger in wasps, bees and ants are modified ovipositors, which can be made of two body parts that fit together to form a tube. Looks like that is what we see here, two parts that fit together to form a tube, which is the stinger
- Student does it has blood on it
Bugscope Team just mold spores

- Student lol jk
- Student What is on the bottom like it's laying on it
- Student ???????

- Student ????????????????????????????????????
- Student who's in control
Bugscope Team Candy

- Student hi transformers
- Student candy
- Bugscope Team candy has control now

- Student us
- Student watz up?? D.E.Y

Bugscope Team looks like plant fibers, and perhaps fungal hyphae -- the ropy part of the fungus
- Student open
- Student what is that
- Student open wat??
- Student wat happen s when someone get stung by a bug there
Bugscope Team We just give people normal first aid. There is no reason to worry about stings unless you are allergic
- Student what is that
- Student wat is it
- Student what up
- Student open wat
- Student bored and yu??
Bugscope Team dude do you want to drive?

- Student cool
- Teacher please give control to DEY

- Student what is that
- Student

- Bugscope Team D.E.Y. you have contorl
- Bugscope Team control

Bugscope Team who said 'bored and yu?'?
- Student it look spider web
- 4:15pm
- Student jajjajaj
- Student what is it like working with a bunch of bugs?
Bugscope Team I usually don't have a bug of living insects...only during the summer. I like the live insects, but they are a pain. It is like having a bunch of small cranky pets.
Bugscope Team it's really not too bad, annie could tell you more, she works with insects all the time
- Student Looks li
- Student what is that
- Student why did you laugh at our name seen

- Student wat scot??
Bugscope Team I am concerned that you are not interested anymore. Would it be better if you were driving the microscope?

- Student because im hungry
- Student Thats looks like the sharpest stinger I'
- Student we are asking u questioons !lol but thats cool on wat u get 2 do
- Student hi transformer lovers

- Student ha ha
- Student wee r all read seen that
- Student lol
- Student its antenna is broken

- Student how many year have you bean working on this job
Bugscope Team 11 years here
- Student we saw that already
- Student wat is it like to work with bugs
Bugscope Team It is fun in that you get to go outside and hike and cut up logs and dig in the dirt. It is challenging because insects do not want to be caught, so you have to really look for them sometimes...and then when you don't find them is it s bummer. But, it is also really interesting because you get to discover new things.
- Student hi lello
- Student no scot no

- Student hi wats up
- Student what your favorite bug
Bugscope Team My favorite insect is a longhorned beetle. You all have lots of great longhorned beetles in Arizona!
- Student bored lol and yu??

- Student cool cool
- Teacher wow
- Student is that a spine
- Student Looks like bananas
- Student well thanks
- Student why are all the bugs so hairy ???'{;
Bugscope Team well, they sense their environment through those hairs (setae), so the more they have, the more they feel
- Student we dont have control any more
- Student no
- Student whos candy
- Student y does it look like rib cages
- Student it looks like a goat
- Bugscope Team scott is controlling the scope for a minute

- Student not eny more
- Bugscope Team ok,mr miller you have control again
- Student o okayyy
- Bugscope Team this is a wasp eye, up close, with two pollen grains and a scale from another insect
- Student why is it scratched
- Student what are those lines
- Student eww that looks lik crumpeled up paper
- Bugscope Team well, not scratched really. when insects die they dry out, and you get cracks in the exoskeleton
- Bugscope Team it must have been fighting with something, it is very scratched up
- Student are those seed
- Student lela la ke te cuento jajaj ntc
- Student looks like it got ran over
- Student hihi cate
- Bugscope Team you can hardly see the eye facets

- Bugscope Team now we can see the relative sizes of pollen and mold, lower left
- Student mmmm
- Student .....
- Bugscope Team you can also see the micron bar, which reads 5 microns
- 4:26pm
- Student looks like a sponge
- Student looks like a brian
- Student not alex pual
- Bugscope Team microns are thousandths of a millimeter

- Student why does it has does holes on it
- Bugscope Team a micron is one thousand nanometers, or ten thousand angstroms
- Student it hairy
Bugscope Team yeah, they need to feel their environment with those hairs
- Student it looks like horns
- Student it looks like a old man
- Bugscope Team an angstrom is one 10 billionth of a meter
- Student Looks like horns

- Student yah it does
