- Bugscope Team session is ready to go

- 11:01am
- Bugscope Team Good morning!
- Bugscope Team Welcome to Bugscope!
- Teacher thanks. we're getting the kids booted -- maybe 3 more minutes
- Bugscope Team Hello ceasar and steph!
- Bugscope Team and john and ricardo!
- Bugscope Team welcome to Bugscope!
- Student hi
- Bugscope Team and anthohy and alicia!
- Bugscope Team oops sorry anthony I can't type
- Bugscope Team this is a honeybee head
- Student cool
- Guest hi scot

- Bugscope Team Hi John and Ricardo!

- Guest what is that
- Bugscope Team oops
- 11:06am
- Bugscope Team this now is a closeup of the fangs of a spider
- Student hi im steph
- Bugscope Team they are pointed toward each other
- Bugscope Team Hi Steph!
- Student what kind of spider
Bugscope Team we aren't sure what kind. It can be hard to identify them, but it is small and has long legs
- Guest what of bug is it
- Bugscope Team when a spider bites, it has these big things (chelicerae) like jaws that move sideways, and the fangs are at the endthe ends
- Bugscope Team you can see a lot of what look like hair on all of the insects/arthropods today
- Student wow, i never knew that
- Student that is cool
- Guest is spider dangerous
Bugscope Team some spiders are dangerous because their venom can destroy your tissue -- like skin and muscle
- Bugscope Team most of the 'hairs' are sensory, and they are often called 'setae,' which is pronounced see-tee.
- Student what kind of spider
Bugscope Team we aren't sure
- Student does it biet
Bugscope Team it does when it wants to eat other insects or if it is scared. It wouldn't bite humans on purpose
- Student hi im ceasar
Bugscope Team Hi Caesar!
- Student do these spiders have poisson
Bugscope Team all spiders have poison and they all eat sort of the same way: they inject their poison, or venom, into an insect, for example, and the venom dissolves the inner organs, and then the spider sucks all of that stuff back up like a milkshake.
- Student how much can this spider hurt you
- Guest how many type of spider in the world
Bugscope Team I read that there are maybe 35,000 to 37,000 species of spider
- 11:11am
- Guest how fast do they fly?
Bugscope Team spiders can catch the wind to move, sometimes, but they don't really fly
- Guest from rich

- Guest hhhhhhhhhhhiiiiii
- Student what is that
Bugscope Team earwigs are sometimes called pincher bugs
- Bugscope Team these are showing male pinchers on an earwig
- Guest sup

- Student cool
- Student what are their enemies
Bugscope Team Earwigs are eaten by spiders and ground beetles, probably mice and lizards as well.
- Guest is it sharp
Bugscope Team they are pretty sharp, and if you bother one it will try to pinch you
- Bugscope Team this is a female earwig
- Student cool
- Student do the earwigs change color
Bugscope Team I'm not sure -- they may change color over time depending on what they eat.
Bugscope Team Nope, they are all dark brown.
- Guest a female!!!!!!!!!!

- Student how big are earwigs pincers?
Bugscope Team it depends on the size of the earwig, but they can easily be a centimeter long on a large earwig

- Student what do they eat
Bugscope Team Generally speaking, they eat decomposing leaves and fungus. However, they are general scavengers and will eat growing plants--especially seedlings.
- Guest how fast can it fly?
Bugscope Team earwigs can barely fly, and they usually do not
- Student do they bite
Bugscope Team No, but they can pinch with those pinchers.
- Student what is that
- Student What do Earwigs eat?
Bugscope Team they are plant pests, but they can also eat other insects
- Guest do earwig have teeth
Bugscope Team They have mandibles, jaws that have some tooth-like bumps on them
- Guest why
- Student what is this it looks like a crab
- Student does it have bacteria in their mouth
Bugscope Team it's hard to say, but it is cool when we see bacteria on insects. It's hard to find it sometimes
- Student what is in its mouth?
Bugscope Team we always wonder about mouths because it seems like there are so many parts that are there to help eating

- 11:16am
- Student wow
- Student what is this one
- Guest what is it
- Guest are you a scientist
Bugscope Team Annie is an entomologist, and yes a scientist. I have a degree in Biology and English, and Cate has a degree in physics
- Student does it use the bathroom
- Guest what do roach eat
Bugscope Team Roaches will eat anything. They especially like starchy things...but they will eat anything at all.
- Guest that is cool
- Student what color is the earwigs blood?
Bugscope Team the blood of an insect is called hemolymph, and it is often clear unless something else is mashed up into it
- Student WOW what is it
- Student do they have bones
- Student what is this
- Guest what is this
Bugscope Team this is a spiracle, which is a breathing hole (like on a whale).
- Guest does it use the bathroom
Bugscope Team in a manner of speaking, yes
- Student or are they just boneless
Bugscope Team they are boneless -- they are invertebrates, so they don't have a backbone, but of course they have no bones at all
- Student do they run
Bugscope Team They run pretty fast.
- Student Do Earwigs tend to crawl then fly?
Bugscope Team They mostly crawl. They are rather fast runners.

- Student are you a ectomologist
Bugscope Team Annie is; Cate and I are electron microscopists.
- Bugscope Team except water doesnt come out of it
- Student that is cool
- Bugscope Team I am an entomologist.
- Guest are the earwigs from the triasic

- Student how long have you been doing bugscope?
Bugscope Team 11 years next month
- Guest i don't see any thiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggg!
Bugscope Team hit Refresh on your browser
- Student why do the roaches tickle you but do not bite you
Bugscope Team maybe they're smart and just want to annoy you do you'll jump away
- Student do roaches still live without their heads
Bugscope Team sort of, for a little while
- Guest what was the first bug you ever caught?
Bugscope Team probably a rolypoly
- 11:21am
- Student how do roaches take their heads off
- Student do they eat dirt
- Student his is perla kyana and eva
- Student what are those things coming out of its eyes?
- Guest are they like ants
- Student what happens when pincer bugs pinch you?does it send a disease
Bugscope Team No diseases are transmitted by earwigs. The pinches just sort of pinch a little. They don't even hurt that bad.
- Student are rochies hairy anddo they have eyes
Bugscope Team yes! you can see the eyes now, on the sides of the head
- Student when do cacaroaches die
Bugscope Team When they get old or when they are eaten or when someone steps on them.
- Guest what is that thing coming out of his head that look creepy
Bugscope Team that is, or those are -- the antennae
- Student what happens is they bite you
Bugscope Team Nothing really happens--cockroaches can't really bite.
- Student i thought they could live without their head for a week
- Student Do Cockaroaches eat everything?
Bugscope Team they are generalists, and although they favor certain things they can eat about anything that any other insect would eat
- Guest what would you do if you foound a new type of bug
Bugscope Team Well, theoretically, I would do lots of research to make sure that it really was a new species. Then you take pictures, and write a description of the new species, you give it a name, and then you publish the description in a scientific journal.
- Student where do you find these insects?
- Guest wow
- Student how is it possible for roaches to live without heads
- Student what do earwigs do all day
- Guest do it have fure on his headx
- Student hi
Bugscope Team Hi!
- Student at what year
- Student are earwigs born with pincers
Bugscope Team I think when they come out of their eggs they do have pinchers
- Guest do the baby nymphs eat their mom?!
Bugscope Team Not unless she dies.
- Student where are the habitats of the roaches
Bugscope Team Roaches live in moist, warm places...usually near humans.
- Student what is that thing
- Guest what do they eat
- Guest what type of spiders do you have
- Student are they blind
Bugscope Team no they have eyes; I can drive you closer if you want to see the roach eyes
- Student do ants belong to the same family as earwigs?
Bugscope Team No! Ants are in the family Formicidae and earwigs are in several families--they are their own order: the Dermaptera.
- Student what do earwigs eat
- Guest what does it do
- Student do u get scarsgsed of the bu
- Student where do you find roaches?
- Guest no kameron,khiem

- Student why does the roach have hairy antennas
- Bugscope Team humans can't live without our heads because we breathe through our mouth and nose and we have a complex system of veins. Insects breathe through spiracles, or little holes in each body segment. Plus, the roach brain does not control this breathing and blood does not carry oxygen throughout the body. Rather, the spiracles pipe air directly to tissues through a set of tubes called tracheae. So when their heads come off they can still live for a little while

- Student do u get scared of the bugs
Bugscope Team sometimes I do
- Student how long do female earwigs live?
Bugscope Team Probably 2-3 months.

- Student what is that?
- Student what is that
- Student what can a roach be eaten by???????
Bugscope Team A small roach can be eaten by a spider, a predaceous beetle or a mantis. A large roach can be eaten by a bird, a lizard, a snake, a mouse, a skunk, a racoon. Anything that can catch them
- Student what is that
- Bugscope Team this is the eye of the roach, one the eyes
- Guest no oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
- 11:26am
- Student what is this
Bugscope Team the eye of the roach; it is very smooth
- Guest what is that
- Student wow thats a wierd eye
- Guest where are you
- Student what is that
- Student does it have hair by its eyes?
- Student do earwigs eat plants
Bugscope Team yes they do -- gardeners do not like them
- Student richard

- Bugscope Team okay I just moved us to the ladybug eye
- Student that is a wierd eye
- Student cooooollllllllll
- Student what does it eat
- Student Do you know how to idenify a Earwigs from a male or female?
Bugscope Team The males have larger pinchers, that are curved outward. The pinchers of the female are straight.
- Student how long do male earwigs live?
- Student could roaches live without a head
Bugscope Team I kept one alive for about three days.
- Student What is this
- Guest Stephine
- Student is the superstition true that earwigs lay their eggs in peoples brains?
Bugscope Team not really
- Student how long do they live
- Student what eye color do they have
Bugscope Team They have black eyes.
- Student who
- Guest hi
- Guest what kind of bug is it
Bugscope Team this is a ladybug
- Student what is this
- Guest sup
- Student are earwigs allergic to anything?
Bugscope Team I don't know that insects have allergies. Their immune systems are not like vertebrate immune systems. They don't really have acquired immunity since they really don't live long enough to need to be immune to something, like the flu or something. So no--earwigs are not allergic to anything because their immune systems are not capable of allergic reactions.

- Student where do they live
- Student sup richard

- Student what is that
- Student whats that stuff on it?
Bugscope Team insects are on the ground all the time, so it's not unusual to see dirt and dust on them
- Guest whats all that fur stuff

- Guest scot did you know this is a bee eye
Bugscope Team this is a ladybug eye
- Student who is answering the questions?
Bugscope Team the people in green
- Student eewww

- Student Eva what is up
- Bugscope Team they live in gardens, and they will come into your house
Bugscope Team I squashed one a very short time ago this morning...sorry Scott--the hatred.
- Student how long does a bee live after it stung something
Bugscope Team Maybe 10-20 minutes. Not very long. It is difficult for them to live without the bottom half of their abdomens.
- Student are those sticking out intestines
Bugscope Team on the top of the head are antennae sticking out, and then from the mouth, there are palps sticking out. Palps are used to help the insect taste or move around food
- Guest what is this?
- 11:31am
- Student hi
- Student where does ear wings live
- Student whats inside there body?
- Student what is the life span of this insect?huh scot?

Bugscope Team hello!
- Student how long is it?
- Student WHAT DOES THIS BUG EAT????
- Student whats in the mouth of that earwig??
Bugscope Team those are palps and the mandibles
- Student do the earwigs kill their dad too
Bugscope Team Nearly mom earwigs nor dad earwigs have anything to do with their offspring. The females lay eggs and then go away. The little earwigs wouldn't eat their mother unless she had died and was decomposing next to the "nest"
- Guest is that its mouth
- Student what does it eat ;how do you do this ;what color is its blod
- Guest is that an earwig
- Student sup erik
- Student hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
- Student how do they see
Bugscope Team the bumpy parts on the very sides of the head are its compound eyes
- Student do they eat plants
- Student it looks like a ants antena!!
- Student do they slobber
Bugscope Team Insects do produce saliva--but I am not sure if anyone knows anything about earwig saliva
- Student sup rich
- Student nike
- Student what do they eat
- Student ah
- Bugscope Team palps are like little accessory mouthparts that help the insect feed
- Student how big is a live earwig
Bugscope Team large ones in the Tropics could be as long as the palm of your hand
- Student nuke tacticulnukealex
- Guest hi cameron
- Student hi
- Guest can earwigs go in you ear and pinch you eardrum, what will happen?????????
Bugscope Team That is highly unlikely. If they were to crawl into your ear, they would probably die. And if they died, you would probably have to go to the doctor to get the dead body removed from your ear. Otherwise, a decomposing insect in your ear could cause an infection.
- Student how do junebugs look like
Bugscope Team we can show you!
- Guest is tis an earwig head
- Student do they eat their own kind?
- Guest sup
- Student what do they eat answer
- Student whats the temp. for this bug?
- Student what family are they from (ants , rolliepollies)????
Bugscope Team earwigs are from Dermaptera, which means 'skin wing'
- Student what gives the bees stinger poison
- Student what is this
- Guest hey stan
- Student this is really cool,do these bugs give you a disaeses
Bugscope Team Nope, earwigs transmit no diseases
- Student this is an earwig right?

- Student rich hi

Bugscope Team they are not poisonous
- Student hi
- Student what is that
- Student is the claw sharp??
Bugscope Team yes you can see it is fairly sharp, but it is small and would not hurt you
- Guest what is that
- Student what is that and where does it live
- Student i
- Student Stephanie, kameron did it not me ( Khiem )
- Student do bees pee
Bugscope Team probably poop more than pee, because insects often retain as much water as they can
- Student what part of bug is this\
- 11:36am
- Student how long do they live
- Student why is there hiar on that claw???
Bugscope Team Insects are covered in hairs, called setae, which help the insect to sense its environment
- Student can they eat insects bigger than their size???
- Student annie wat is this?
- Student thanks scot
- Guest scot hi dude
- Student hi cathy
- Student plz andswer
- Student how big is it?
- Student how do you know it is the claw
Bugscope Team we have seen them before, and lots of insects have claws like that
- Student does it pinch
- Student hi
- Student were does it come from
Bugscope Team it's attached to the end of the leg. You can find a claw at the end of any insect leg, but from the naked eye they are hard to see especially on the smaller insects
- Student is that hair around it?
- Student hi erik and lauren
- Student what is that picture,to us it looks like a claw.are we correct.please reply.
- Guest is it harry
- Student cameron what you doing?

Bugscope Team Order Dermaptera--I think one of the common genera is Forficula.
- Student does it catch predators with its claws??
- Student Hey Richard :D

Bugscope Team they do have eyes usually, but it's hard to see them it seems
- Guest where are it eye
- Student what is that
- Student we've been waiting for a repy
Bugscope Team sorry the questions go by so fast we miss some of them for sure
- Student hi
- Student hey cathy wats up?

- Student can the legs get cut off and still live?
Bugscope Team Yup, it can loose many of those legs and still get around very well.
- Student about how many children can it have
- Student P.S. only cameron is speaking :]
- Student its arie
- Student bugs looked soo cute small but sooo creepy up close
- Student why are they fat
- Student how many legs
Bugscope Team They have two set of legs per segment--so four per segment...we just have to count up all the segments now
- Student what is on its body is it mold or dust m
Bugscope Team it's not mold. Mold has a different look to them and we will see mold spores. By the looks of it, it looks like plant matter and dirt
- Student hi amir
- Student hi cam
- Guest friends forever scot
Bugscope Team yup
- Student scot whats this
- Student this is the head of what?
Bugscope Team it is a millipede, and it has about 30 legs, I think

- Bugscope Team you can almost count them!
- Student what are some cool facts about millipede
- Bugscope Team and those are on one side!
- Student do they eat marshmallows
Bugscope Team They probably would eat a marshmallow...however, just like humans, marshmallows are not the best food for a millipede.
- Guest how long is it?
- Student how many legs do you think they have??
- Student hey wats up rebcca
- Student is it sleeping
- Student what do it eat
- Student does a worm bite

Bugscope Team Hi You Two
- Student this is so coooooool
- Student what kind of animal do they eat
Bugscope Team No animals--strict vegetarians
- Student hi rich
- Student wa
- Student what is the skin color of a millipede
- Student do they have poisin
Bugscope Team Some millipedes excrete "poison"--more like a smelly chemical--when they are destroyed. If you were to eat them, you would probably feel sick.
- Student hat
- Student I
- Student his legs are all broken and twisted
Bugscope Team yeah it is hard to get good samples sometimes
- Student hi annie
- Student does a ear wig bite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bugscope Team they prefer to pinch

- Student MAYBE ITS DIRT
- Student JENHYLL
- Student jessica serg, can we be friends?
- Student annie how many legs do they have?
Bugscope Team They have two sets per segment...2x2 is four. Then you would multiply 4 times the number of segments--which I shall not count.
- Student what is this insect
- Student do/they/sleep
- Student hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
- Student what do millopedes eat? please right back
- Student you did not give me a answer.

- Guest you wa nt to be friend with us
- Bugscope Team millipede broken down is milli- thousand and pede- foot
- Student does earwig fly
Bugscope Team they can but not very well and not far
- Student chicken
- Bugscope Team a lot of insects and arthropods like this excrete poison, as Annie said, to keep ants, especially, from bothering them
- Guest yes were friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now scot and everybody else
- Student how long does a milipede live ???????????
Bugscope Team They can live a few years, actually.
- Student somtimes it flies
- Bugscope Team but this one obviously doesnt have that many
- Student what is that is it adead insect
- Student how long is it????
- Student ashley and noe and osc can you be my friend
- Student where does this insect live
Bugscope Team Millipedes are not insects!! They live in moist, warm places--in soil and under logs and rocks.

- Student what is that
- Student how do we change our names?
Bugscope Team you would have to log out and then log back in again
- Student what is the age of the oldest bug that lived
Bugscope Team It is hard to say. Insects have been around for 380 million years!
- Student do bugs live mostly in the country or the city [please reply]
Bugscope Team Insects are found in every habitat. They are more diverse in natural settings, because there are more plants and more ecological niches for them to fill.
- Student when they have there babies do they come out in eggs?
- Student are/they/famase
- Guest does it bite
- Student scot what isit
Bugscope Team this is the head of a large black beetle -- the closest we could come to showing you a darkling beetle
- Student does it have bones
- Student sup melven kids
- Student hey this questio n is for annie: does an ear wig digest by his bottom or sides or mouth or no digest??
Bugscope Team The earwig has a digestive system just like we do. It eats with its mouth, the food is broken down by digestive enzymes in the gut, and whatever is left over is excreted as waste.
- Guest bestfriends
- 11:47am
- Student how do you tell the difference between a female and male/??
- Student logut to change yuor name
- Student hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
- Student is this a centip
- Guest cate does it bite
Bugscope Team these can bite, but there is no poison they will inject you with, so it might be a slight pinch feeling and that's it. When you get stung or bitten by a spider, I think most of the pain comes from what they inject you with
- Student what is BUGSCOPE all about?
Bugscope Team Bugscope is a way to become interested in science that we think is fun -- we like it. You are controlling, from your classroom, a $600,000 electron microscope.
- Student that thing is hideous
- Student what is that
- Student rodas619
- Student to dood of usa your hot
- Student hi
- Student hi

- Student hi
- Student hi
- Student hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii scottttttttttttttttttt
- Student tell us your name
- Student why are most bugs hairy
Bugscope Team they are hairy because the hairs help them sense their environment -- they can sense touch, and wind, and hot/cold, and they can also help them hear and also smell.
- Student o my gosh what is that???
- Student is that a upsidedown spider
- Student bob
- Student lik gorillas
- Student Hey people it is already reccess
- Student hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiscot

- Student people bugs are awsome
- Student hi arie
- Student hi back to you eva and kyana and pela
- Student wwwwwwwwooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww
- Student how does it lay iit's eggs?
Bugscope Team The females have ovipositors, which are tubes that they push eggs through. The eggs are fertilized on the way out of the female's body.
- Student hi
- Student hi
- Student what is behind it
- Student thanks
- Student plzz reply what do they eat??
Bugscope Team I am not exactly sure what kind of beetle this is. It looks like a ground beetle. Ground beetles are predators. They eat other insects and small arthropods.
- Student is it a spider, beetle ,or a fly
Bugscope Team beetle
- Student hi
- Student what do they eat
Bugscope Team I think they eat plants and other insects -- either
- Student wat do they eat

- Guest what is that
- Student John hey come to my house today
- Student if it is bitten will it die?
Bugscope Team it depends on how badly it is bitten
- Guest annie why does it eat insects
Bugscope Team Why do we eat cheeseburgers? That is what these beetles are adapted to do. It is their JOB to eat other insects :)
- Student are they fat
- Student this is cool
