- Student are they still liveing?
Bugscope Team none of the insects in the microscope are alive. They would need to be dead and dry to be able to image them well
- Student how old is it
Bugscope Team probably less than a year old -- most insects don't live more than a season]
- Student how many eggs can they at once

- Student are there any in floida
Bugscope Team yes there are leafhoppers almost anywhere there is vegetation
- Student :x
- Student can it bit me
Bugscope Team no it won't bite. it has no teeth.

- Bugscope Team to keep the eggs from drying out
- Bugscope Team they are very tiny, about 200-300 nanometers big
- Student are they eggs?
Bugscope Team no but if the brochosome were to lay eggs, those would be covering them
- Bugscope Team see the micron bar in the lower left corner of the viewing screen?

- Student the moon

- Bugscope Team you can go up close to see
- Student does it have teetle
- Bugscope Team they eat other insects, much like praying mantises
- Student are those hairy?
Bugscope Team yes you can see that they have lots of setae on them -- setae are sensory hairs
- Student umm gross
- Bugscope Team they don't have teeth but they have hard mouthparts
- Student can you eat it
- Student does it have parasites
Bugscope Team no but there is a bumblebee on here that has mites living on it, or I should say "were" living on it since they are dead too
- Student can they grow five years
- Student DO THE EGGS COME OUT OF THOSE BROKEN ENTENAS?????
Bugscope Team the eggs usually come out of an ovipositor, which is kind of like a stinger that delivers eggs
- Student can they be found in a contenent

- Student wierd, isn't it
- Student where is the head??

- 9:23am
- Student hairy
- Student can they eat human
- Student What are parasites

- Student WHAT IS THAT ???
- Student are those hiars?

- Student justin...how cool is that???
- Student is that a limb?
- Bugscope Team the fat part is one of the large forelimbs that it uses to grasp prey
- Student is this bug big
- Bugscope Team the forelimbs are much like those on praying mantises
- Student eeewwwwwww
- Student are these green?
- Student i don`t think it isneat
- Student no

- Bugscope Team do you recognize this?

- Bugscope Team this is a cricket
- Student do they have bones?
- Bugscope Team the head is several millimeters across
- Student are they hollow?
Bugscope Team under the exoskeleton they have "bug blood" and their organs
- Student IS THIS JUST THE HEAD? OR IS BIGER
Bugscope Team this is just the head right now
- Student how old
- Student what does it eat
- Student Where are they found?
- Student What is a compound eye
- Student yeah
- Student what are all of the stuff coming from it's mouth
Bugscope Team there are palps coming around this cricket's mouth as well. And underneath the mouth you will see a hole, that's where I removed a leg so we could see the face
- Student this is just really freaky
- Student are they preyed on by anything?
Bugscope Team reptiles and birds eat them
- Student NARLY!!!!!!!!!!!
- 9:29am
- Student it looks funny
- Student what does it eat?
- Student where is the mouth?
- Student do they breath like humans?
- Student Is it old or a baby?
Bugscope Team It was probably a young cricket because it's small
- Student IS THIS DEAD?
Bugscope Team yes it's dead. It would be mean if we were to stick a live insect in a vacuum chamber and then shot an electron beam at it!
- Student GROSS !!!!!!!!!!!
- Student do they have prey
- Student coool
- Student is it hary
Bugscope Team they do have hairs as well
- Student y dos the eye hav hair
Bugscope Team some insect eyes will have hair in between the facets of the compound eyes. We know in fruit fly they are used to help it tell the direction of wind currents for better flight and maneuverability
- Student what do THEYeat
- Student do they smell with there nose or do they not have a nose/:(
Bugscope Team usually insects do not have noses that smell things -- they use setae that are adapted to sense chemicals in the air, which is what smells are
- Student what do they eat?
Bugscope Team Crickets are omnivores and feed on almost anything-usually organic materials, plant decay, grass, fruits, seedling plants, fungi and even meat.
- Teacher How exactly do these microscopes work?
Bugscope Team We have the insects stuck to an aluminum disk that has some carbon tape on it. We then coat the insects with gold-palladium to make the sample conductive, or else we wouldn't get a very good image. We stick them in the microscope and pump it to vacuum and shoot the electron beam at them. The electrons will hit the insects and secondary electrons bounce off and are collected by the secondary electron detector, where it reads the signal and gives us a 3-d image.
- Student do they attcak flys
- Student do they eat meat

- 9:34am
- Bugscope Team now you can see that we are right in between the cricket and another insect
- Bugscope Team the background that is kind of bubbly is the carbon tape
- Student wow thats a mouth full
- Bugscope Team see the claws?
- Student what are the spikes on it's arms?
Bugscope Team those spikes are hairs, called setae (see-tee), and they are like cat whiskers in that they help the insect feel its environment

- Student what is a electron beam
Bugscope Team the electron beam is a stream of electrons

- Student cute

- Student DO THE BUGS HAVE EGGS WHEN YOU BRING THEM INTO THE LABRATORY
- Student what kind of bud is it
- Student what is that hole
Bugscope Team this was stuck in a display case with a pin before i "harvested" it

- Student
- Student What is that hole
- Student what is that hole?
- Student What is that hole?
Bugscope Team that is a pin hole, used to pin the bug down onto a specimen tray
- Student it looks fat
Bugscope Team they look wide and flat when you see them
- Bugscope Team a stream of electric particles
- Student is it hard to spot a stinkbug
Bugscope Team no they move fairly slowly, and they are shaped like badges, or shields
- Student does it make a noise?
- Student like a buttrfly
- Student where can it be found?
- Student do stink bugs realy stink?:_
Bugscope Team they produce droplets of bad smelling liquid that other insects don't like. even the stinkbugs don't like the way they smell
- Student what is the line down its body
Bugscope Team that is the proboscis
- Student they took mine
- Student Is this all defrent bugs?:o
- Student yes
- Student what does it eat
- Student are those round things on the side of its head eyes?
Bugscope Team yep, totally! those are compound eyes
- Student DO YOU STUDY THE BUGS FOR MORE THEN ONE DAY?
Bugscope Team we can if we want, if we put them back into a desiccator to keep them dry in between imaging
- Student Can bugs see good when their eyes are bubbled out like the stink bugs is?
Bugscope Team well, flying insects have the best vision, they need it because when they fly around they need to not bump into stuff
- Student Where are they mostly found?
- Student can we see the nxet one
- Student wierd.
- 9:39am
- Student wierd
- Student what is a proboscis ?
Bugscope Team it is a type of mouth that only is used for drinking liquid
- Student cool
- Student were are they found
- Student what dose compound eyes meen?
Bugscope Team compound eyes are eyes that have multiple facets -- multiple tiny lenses called ommatidia
- Student can thay fly??
Bugscope Team yes they do have wings
- Student where are they found?
- Student are there carnivores
- Student what is that long thing in the head
- Student it looks angy:p
- Student what do they eat?
Bugscope Team they eat both plants and insects- they are omnivorous
- Student what color are stink bugs?
Bugscope Team they are usually green or yellow
- Student can we see the bumblebee stinger
Bugscope Team yes you can ask Mrs B to click on the preset to drive the microscope to that area
- Student doe ha v any in captivity thats alive
- Student where do you find these bugs?
- Student How big can stink bugs get?
Bugscope Team they get to be about the size of your thumbnail in this part of the world, and they are kind of flat
- Student is it flat?
- Student .

- Student what is that?
- Student awsome
- Student this is a coolyo picture
- Bugscope Team you can see now how this stinger has two parts that can work to cut into your skin
- Student What are those strings?
- Student Is that hair>
Bugscope Team yes bumblebees are VERY hairy. Their hairs are used to catch pollen
- Student are they stink bugs do they stink?
- Student thats a stinger
- Student does it hurt when it stings you
Bugscope Team well, it can hurt a little bit, some people are allergic, and then go into shock, so if you have the allergy, then yes it can hurt a lot
- Student is the stinger broken
Bugscope Team it's not broken -- it has two cutting halves. not all stingers are like that
- Student are bumble bee stingers as dull as it looks?
- Bugscope Team they are sharp like steak knives
- Student now it looks yuck!!!!!!!
- Student is it sharp?
- Student is the stinger separated?
- Student yuck!!
- Student couled it inject parisites
Bugscope Team no but parasitic wasps will inject their eggs into other insects, like caterpillars, or insect eggs
- Student what do they eat???
Bugscope Team they eat nectar
- Student awesome
- Student Is this stinger before or after it stung someone?
Bugscope Team it probably didn't sting anyone, but it could sting repeatedly
- Student is that pointy like a pencil
- Student do bumble bees sting alot?:.
- Student how do they die when they sting you?
Bugscope Team honeybees are the bees that die when they sting. That is because they have a barbed stinger that is meant to stay stuck as they pull away. When they do pull away, a muscle comes out as well, which is why they die. The muscle will keep pumping with the stinger attached, and the pumping action drives the stinger deeper and also releases as much poison as possible
- Student how long can they grow
- Student why are the stigers seperated
- Student will the regula size bee be the same size?
- Student where is the head?
Bugscope Team the head is far north of where we are looking now
- Student if they have posin where is it?
Bugscope Team the poison is inside, in a gland that goes to the stinger
- 9:44am
- Student to me it looks like it has 2 stingers
- Student owweyy!
- Student did it move?
- Student do they die after they sting?
Bugscope Team no bumblebees will live on to sting again; honeybees die though
- Student is it a honey bee?
- Student how old is it
Bugscope Team it is probably 2 months old, kind of old for a bumblebee
- Student i thought they sting you once and die
- Student is the stinger broken:(
Bugscope Team it's not broken; it has two cutting halves to get in and out of your skin more efficiently
- Student can you opne it
- Bugscope Team we are heading for the head
- Bugscope Team cool

- Student Is the stinger hairy and is the stinger the only part on a bee that is not hairy?
- Student the stinger looks it is broken is it?
- Student i like this
- Student coolieo
- Student how old do they have to be before they die
Bugscope Team I think they just live a few months
- Bugscope Team now you can see pollen on the thorax where we are now

- Bugscope Team but this is not a flea; it's a mite
- Student st like that
- Bugscope Team you can see another mite if you go to preset 15
- Bugscope Team the presets are places we have pre-located on the sample stub.
- Student oh
- Bugscope Team do you want to see what the inside of the microscope looks like?
- Student yeah
- Student do they jump?
- Student were does this bug live dude
Bugscope Team we don't know too much about mites. We notice them on insects that can't clean themselves very well, like big beetles. We've also noticed that they tend to die with their host.
- Student i do too

- Student the inside of a microscope
- Student coooooooooooollllllll
- Student is scot there
- Student I WONDER how it moves
Bugscope Team there are little motors that move the stage around, which is what the aluminum disk with the insects are located
- Student scot is this a microscope
- Student what are the samples?
- Student are those things on the table?worms!
Bugscope Team those were the samples -- the bee, the stinkbug, the fruit fly, spider, damselfly, mantis fly
- Student what is on that plate thing

- Student what is this Scot.
- Student how much blood can a flea consum
- Student or a tick/dust mite
- Student are these bug are posin
- Student can we look at the cube thing?
- Student cate how do people get samples
Bugscope Team sometimes school will send in insects to us. They are easily collected by looking under rocks or in rotting wood. The best way to kill them is to freeze them because they just go to sleep. Other ways to get samples is to use specific insect traps, but I don;t know too much about those
- Student is this a flea egg
- Teacher I am here... having technical issues. You guys are running the scope, right?
Bugscope Team yes but can we help youj?
- Student is that a beetle
- Bugscope Team this is a actual flee
- Student thxs
- Student is this a butterfly or wat?
- Student what is this bug and what dose it eat?
- Student look at the bottom right corner

- Student is this pic a beetle?
- Student thxs
- Student what is that thing rihgt there
Bugscope Team it is a mite
- Student how small is it
- Student what do mites do scot
Bugscope Team it depends. some of them eat scraps of food that stick to the insect they're on. some will eat the insect when it dies
- Student is this a spider
- Student what is that bug on Alex
- Bugscope Team it's a mite on a bumblebee, with setae hairs around it
- Student what do these things do!!/?
- Student no it's too small to be a spider
- Student I am still wondering what the bug eats
- Student what is a mite
- Student alex what do mites do?
Bugscope Team mites are bugs that live off of other bugs, they are parasites
- Student hey scot do can you tell what that is
- Student that so cool alex
- Student where are the eyes?
Bugscope Team not all mites have eyes. I dont think this one has them either
- Student can it move and jump
- Student does it bite Scot.
Bugscope Team it would be way too small to bite you or me, and it might not have the right kind of mouthparts
- Student what are mites atracted to ?

- Student what are the little things on the sides Cate.
- Student how do they get so close to it and take a pic
- Student do stinkbugs rilly stink?
- Student i bet it probaly really does stink
Bugscope Team yes they really stink, and they are said not to like the way they smell either
- Student why is the mouth so long and white?
Bugscope Team we are seeing the top part of the mouth. the tip of the proboscis -- the piercing mouthparts -- is to the south
- Student is it born from a egg???/
- Student what is that bug called anyways?
- Student does it stink when you kill it
Bugscope Team if you touch it, it will emit some ooze that stinks
- Student cate how often do you use buig samples
Bugscope Team we only use them once and then throw them out usually. After a while, the insects start to rot or get dusty/dirty
- Bugscope Team although in Vietnam, they eat stink bugs as a delicacy!
- Student are those eyes on the side of it's head
Bugscope Team yes the round golf-ball shaped things are the eyes
Bugscope Team totally, compound eyes
- Student wow it looks so coool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\
- Student im not tlking BOUT THE EYES
- Student how does it realese it's smell
Bugscope Team it can smell using some of the tiny setae that look like hairs to us
- Student or do tythey have to realease some gas or venum top smell bad>?
- Student what kind of stinkbug is it Cate
- Student what is a mite
Bugscope Team some, but not all, of mites are parasites that live on other insects, feeding on them, kinda like mosquitos do to humans
- Student cool
- Student !!!!
- Student how long will it live for
- Student I know these things are small. How small?
- Student look at the thing on its neck what is that???/?/
- Student are those eyes on the side of it's head
Bugscope Team totally, compound eyes
- Student what are does two big things on the side of it ears scot

Bugscope Team stink bugs are omnivorous. They eat plants and other insects
- Student HOW MANY EYE DOES IT HAVE?\
- Student what do they eat Scot.

- Student whats that
- Student will it die if it realese the smell
Bugscope Team no it can live to stink again
- Bugscope Team oh sorry you said 'how does it release its smell?' it squeezes a droplet of liquid from its abdomen, and that smells
- Student is that a monkey
- Student ?
- Student what is that bug?
- Student cate how long can bug see
Bugscope Team not sure how far it can see. It has to have some good sight though because it flies around.
- Student holy guackomoly!!!! thats a claw? or a face??? woah
Bugscope Team Ha! it is a claw
- Student is tht posin
- 10:41am
- Student what is this scot
Bugscope Team this is one of the claws on a strangelooking fly we have in the 'scope today
- Student what all those things pointing out????
Bugscope Team well, insects have lots of those hair looking things, they are called setae (see-tee), and they help the insect feel its enviornment
- Student cool man
- Student were can you find these's fly claw kate
- Student is that thing real?????????/!!!!!!!!!
- Student what kind of bug is this??
Bugscope Team it's a fly with a long head -- sort of a weevil-like head
- Student does this fly claw carry diseas

Bugscope Team no they don't have teeth: some have sucking mouthparts, some piercing, and some cutting or slashing
- Student what does that bug eat?
- Student what is that bug doing
Bugscope Team well, it's dead, inside the scope now
- Student what animals claw is it?
Bugscope Team this is from a fly
- Student Were do you get the bugs samples Mrs.B?
- Student dude what is it what type of claw is it
- Student why do flys have hair
Bugscope Team they are needed to help it feel what is around it. They have hard exoskeletons, which is like wearing a suit of armor, and in order to feel stuff, it needs those hairs, which are connected to nerves underneath. So it can feel, sense heat, taste/smell
- Student lol
- Student is that thing getting eaten? ?
- Student it's a weird looking fly claw i'm sure----
Bugscope Team all of the parts of the claw make it look like a spider claw
- Student what would this bug do
- Student lol no
- Student no its already dead chris... lol
- Student are the claws sharp and if they are could they draw blood?
Bugscope Team well, not from a human, but from other small insects, yes, the claw can be an offensive weapon
- Student WHERE DO YOU GET THE BUGS SAMPLES FROM SCOT!
Bugscope Team they come from collections, and people send them to us, and we find them outside or in our own houses
- Student lol
- Student is it possible for the claw to fall off
Bugscope Team the claw could fall off but it is pretty well attached
- Student cate is this a worm
- Student problt
- Student ... probly i mean
- Student yep
- Student no
- Student is that mouth looking part where the fly drops eggs?
- Student no it's not a snake
- Student is it hanging off of somthing?
- Student what is that dot on his forhead
Bugscope Team this is a claw, not a head
- Student are these bugs dead
Bugscope Team yes they are all dead
- Student lol yep i think
- Student how long can a bog stay alive for after the bug sampel is taken
Bugscope Team well, we've seen some bugs survive being inside the scope, but that is very rare. usually we freeze the insects well before they go into the scope, that kills them in the most humane way possible
- Student but i think it is getting eaten is it?
- Student why is this bug so tiny?
- Bugscope Team let'

- Student lol well it looks like a mole if u look upclose
- Student let'?
- Student no its not chris
- Student CATE DO BUGS HAVE TEETH
Bugscope Team no but sometimes when they bite us they feel like they do! They usually have a pair of jaws that open side-to-side, instead of how ours open- up and down, which they use to bite things
- Student tht is a lot of salt
- Student what does this bug eat Scot.
Bugscope Team Marlesha we were not sure what that bug was. It looked like a weevil-headed fly.
- Student wow were dose that salt come from
- Student ?
- Bugscope Team this is a grain of salt from a Wendy's restaurant
- Student yessssssss!

Bugscope Team this is salt from wendy's restaurant
- Student lol xochitl
- Student where did you get this picture?????Scot
Bugscope Team these are images in live time, in real time, from the scanning electron microscope
- Bugscope Team salt is VERY VERY important for the human body. thing is humans totally overload on it, and like anything else, it's bad whe you use too much
- Student IS THAT REALY SALT
- Student are thows a lot of money?
- Student alexs wat kind of foods R they on
Bugscope Team salt is used on most foods, and a way to enhance the flavor of that food
- Student were do u put it in
- Student woah i see the one we were just looking at! it looks like some video game or other foosd
- Student do u break it up
- Student it looks like a lot of salt
- Student is this salt bad for you alex
Bugscope Team no, only in large amounts is it bad for you. but it is true that most fast food has WAY TOO MUCH SALT
- Student dose it eat things

- Student are there foot prints in there?cate

- Student can u eat that i would not
- Student !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Student ?
- Student .how does it make music
- Bugscope Team cricket.
- Bugscope Team salt is also a preservative, it can make the meat last longer
- Teacher could you explain how the microscope works to our group?
- Bugscope Team the microscope is an electron microscope. so the image is gathered by electrons, not light
- Bugscope Team We have the insects stuck to an aluminum disk that has some carbon tape on it.
- Student how high can it jump
- Bugscope Team the samples we see are inside the vacuum chamber of the scanning electron microscope.
- Bugscope Team the electrons are shot at the bugs inside the vacuum chamber, and they hit the bugs and make the metal coating bounce off, and those electrons that bounce off are collected by the... oh cate, just described it fine... cool!
- Student cool
- Bugscope Team the images we see come from the secondary electrons that bounce out of the samples when the electron beam hits them
- Bugscope Team the images are black and white because color is a function of light, and since we are using electrons, not light, to get the image, we don't have color
- Student awesome that is a good description cate thanks!!!
- Student how many body parts does it have
Bugscope Team oh, lots, a head, abdomen, tarse (legs, arms), antenna, eyes, etc.
- 10:52am
- Student did you cut the cricket head off or is it still on the body and you are not showing it Scot????
Bugscope Team the rest of the body is to the south if you want to drive down to see it
- Bugscope Team it has a head, a thorax, an abdomen, six legs, two antennae, two eyes
- Student how big are they?
- Student Did ants get to the cricet by the time you find it?
- Student is this a robot or a crict or a crocadiel head cate?
Bugscope Team this is a cricket head
- Student ian is kristopher and penelope and ian forgot penelope (ellie
- Student 0s name

Bugscope Team we bought this microscope 10 years ago, and it cost around $600,000 then
- Student no
- Student many$$$$$
- Student what happened?
- Student holy cow!
- Student dang
- Student moolaah
- Student !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Student nice ian

- Student like a lot
- Bugscope Team look at the scalebar on the bottom left of the image, and from that you can tell how big the cricket is
- Student what type of cricket is this scot
Bugscope Team I'm sorry I don't know what kind it is.
- Student how much can a cricket eat in day
- Bugscope Team this is pretty far south

- Teacher lol, sorry alex... we are on laptops now and they are super annoying! :)
- Student mantis
- Student oh
- Student are those legs or hand cate?
Bugscope Team they are legs. All insect legs have claws at the end of them
- Student how do mantis use their claws
Bugscope Team they use their forelimbs to grasp their prey, which is held tight in the spines as the forelimbs close
- Student lol mrs.b
- Student IS the microscope able to detect germs
- Student how long can it live?????????????????????????????????????????????????????/
- Bugscope Team laptops are kinda funky, true
- Student how big can a cricket grow to be
- Student lol lol
- Student wat
- Student are those bumpy things eggs?
Bugscope Team the bumpy things are carbon tape covered with silver paint that we used to hold the sample down and complete the conductive pathway.
- Student what kind of guts dose it have is it slimy hard or pretcted by skin
Bugscope Team insects do have guts, yes, the guts are inside the exoskeleton, which is a very hard shell. insects don't have bones like humans, so they need the hard exoskeleton to keep their shape and guts inside their bodies
- Student how long can they live?????????? how long?
- Student do they live for a long time???????/
- Student do crickets have fingers and toes?
Bugscope Team no they dont, they just have claws which are used to grab onto things like food
