- Bugscope Team starting presets

- 8:28am

- 8:35am

- 8:40am

- Bugscope Team I am here, but I am working on something until 9:15
- Teacher Hello! My students are at PE so I thought I would get things rolling and ready
- Bugscope Team hi, welcome to bugscope, we are still setting up presets
- 8:45am
- Teacher WOW! They look great.

- Bugscope Team :)
- Bugscope Team cate is making the presets this morning, she knows how to find cool things on insects
- Bugscope Team if you have any questions mrs. hurton feel free to ask
- Teacher When the students sign in should they use there names?
- Bugscope Team that is a good way to do it, yes, but it's up to you
- Bugscope Team each login has to be different, so we can address each unique question
- Bugscope Team how many students are you planning to have login today?
- Teacher We will have 13 computers going. Will you switch control of the microscope for us?
- Teacher 21 students, me, the principal and assisstant principal
- Bugscope Team ah, cool, 13 is no problem at all, excellent. yes, if you want us to switch control from one students to the next, you just chat that request to us, and we can switch it in 2-3 seconds
- Bugscope Team perfect. 24 logins is just fine
- Teacher I will have the students paired up, so the name will be _____&________
- 8:51am
- Bugscope Team ah, 24 people, but 13 computers... ah yes, pairing up is common way to do it. that works well
- Bugscope Team we will answer most of the questions. and annie is here too, she is a phd student in entomology and knows most of the difficult questions about insects
- Bugscope Team scott and cate are microscopists, they also know about bugs
- Bugscope Team and i'm a sysadmin, and know a little about bugs too
- Teacher The kids have lots of bug questions and scientist questions. Of course, they looked at last years script and saw that some of you have eaten bugs as well. :)
- Bugscope Team Yah, that would be me
- Bugscope Team bug eater
- Bugscope Team heh

- Teacher They might want to hear about that as well.
- Bugscope Team i had an ant cookie about a week ago
- Teacher was it good?
- Bugscope Team i'm in the process of trying to swallow a horse, who will hopefully eat the dog, that ate the cat, that ate the mouse, that ate the spider, than ate the fly that i accidentally swallowed while riding my bike 2 days ago...
- Bugscope Team Well..it tasted like a cookie with little sort of vinegary pieces of ant body in it
- Bugscope Team I like other foods better

- 8:57am
- Student Love it

- Bugscope Team the vinegary taste (acetic acid) may come from the formic acid in the ants

- Bugscope Team I am hoping that is what it was from. Otherwise my friend Liz is a weird cook.
- Teacher I couldn't sign up Breanna & Tiffany as students so I just logged them in as teachers.:)
Bugscope Team hmm, are these computers on the same network? if not, then the student login won't work. if so, then you should login as a "guest". that's best.
- Bugscope Team heh
- 9:02am

- Bugscope Team ok, we are done with presets, and ready to start whenever you are
- Teacher The network is the same. Should I log them out and sign them back in as guests
Bugscope Team ah, no, that is fine for now. it's not that big a deal i guess :)
- Bugscope Team session is unlocked
- Bugscope Team if you have any problems, and would like to call us, the number here is 217-265-8164. or you could just chat the question to us as well
- Bugscope Team don't worry about having the students logged on as teachers
- Bugscope Team you may drive now, if you wish
- Bugscope Team you can also let us know if you want any of the students to drive
- Teacher They are just walking in from PE. We will be ready in a second
- Bugscope Team we can confer control of the microscope to anyone you would like
- Bugscope Team cool
- 9:08am
- Student does a ant lion have a abdamin
Bugscope Team yes all insects have abdomens
- Guest hello
- Bugscope Team hi students, welcome to bugscope!
- Student hi
- Bugscope Team yes ant lions have abdomens
- Student whats up
- Guest do antlions only eat ants?
- Student hi
- Student Does a antlion have a back bone?
Bugscope Team they do not have backbones. They have an exoskeleton
Bugscope Team Insects are invertebrates, meaning that they do not have a spinal column -- or a backbone. insects have exoskeletons -- their 'skeleton' is on the outside of the body
- Bugscope Team the ant lion we got from you was angry, still kicking
- Teacher hello
- Student how long do antlions live?
- Guest hi alex
- Bugscope Team where the bones are on the outside
- Student what is your favorite bug
Bugscope Team i like mites, they are tiny bugs that feed on bigger bugs
- Teacher OK I think everyone is all set to go
- Guest dose the ant lion have teeht
Bugscope Team Antlions have mandibles--big jaws. They are kind of like teeth
- Student why do ant lions eat ants
Bugscope Team Yes, they do. The larvae dig pits in the sand and the ants fall into the pits and the antlions eat them.

- Teacher why is its name ant lion
Bugscope Team Because they eat ants and they have giant fierce jaws (like a lion)
- Student whats that?
- Teacher what is the rarest butterfly?
Bugscope Team I am not really sure...there are probably many many butterfly species that are not yet known to science. So, it would be impossible to know.
- Bugscope Team these look like antenna on some kind of insect?

- Bugscope Team antlions can eat other small insects, but I think its food of choice is ants

- Teacher I don't seem to be doing a good job at the controls
Bugscope Team you are doing fine mrs. hurton, just rememnber when you are clicing to drive, click once to start moving, then click again to stop
- 9:13am
- Guest is there a nother name for the antlion
Bugscope Team You can call them by their scientific name: Myrmeleonidae
- Student Do you like your job?
Bugscope Team Yes, I am an entomologist, and I get to work outside in the field, discover new species of insects, and work with other scientists
- Bugscope Team today we have owlfly larvae, which are related to antlions, but the antlion was still alive and we could not get it to hold still to put it on the stub yesterday
- Student do they drink anaything
- Bugscope Team mrs. hurton try clicking on a preset
- Bugscope Team we drove off the edge of the sample it looks like
- Bugscope Team edge of the World

- Student how do the antlion eat
Bugscope Team The antlions dig a pit in the sand. Then they dig a hole and bury themselves in the sand. Then they open their jaws wide, and they sit and they wait until some sort of small insect (like an ant) falls into the pit. THEN then antlion snaps its jaws closed around the little insect and has a nice meal
- Teacher why is a ant lion is so creepy
Bugscope Team they have huge powerful jaws, maybe that's why!

- Student everything looks like a fly
- Student do antlions feed on other antlions?

- Bugscope Team this is the head of a female housefly
- Bugscope Team mrs. hurton, when you want to move, using "click to center" is a little easier to control
- Student do antlions sleep?
Bugscope Team They kind of sleep. They cannot close their eyes, but there are times during the day that they are less active. It is kind of like sleep. We do know that bees sleep...
- Teacher It does not seem to be working for me even when I press the preset. How about we try to transfer to Olivia & Emily
- Teacher sorry we did not greet you at first Annie
Bugscope Team That is OK. :)
- Bugscope Team ok, elivia and emily now have control of the scope!
- Guest what is a vespa head
Bugscope Team vespa is another name for wasp, so wasp head
- Guest dose the ant lion eat other ant lions
Bugscope Team antlions are notoriously irritable and would likely eat other antlions if they could
- Bugscope Team Kleo vespa is Italian for wasp.

- Bugscope Team nice olivia and emily, now try focusing a bit

- Student This computer is not showing the microscope image. Any ideas?
Bugscope Team you could try refreshing your browser
- Student now there was a fly and it look nothing like it look like in person
- Bugscope Team focus can be tricky, try going one way, if it gets worse, try the other way
- Bugscope Team if your image goes black, hit refresh (F5)

- Student i see
- Teacher what kind of insects your sending us on the picture above
Bugscope Team This is a super close up of a fly mouth (I think)
- Guest thats cool
- Bugscope Team this is the tongue of the fly, OOF
- Student how old do antlions get?
Bugscope Team They live between three months to a year. It depends on where they live and what the climate is like.
- Student what is your most interesting bug?
- Student what is that picture
- Bugscope Team olivia and emily are actually controlling our $600,000 scanning electron microscope
- 9:18am
- Bugscope Team there
- Bugscope Team NICE job olivia and emily, now it's in focus. great job!!!!!
- Guest dose the antlion have predator
Bugscope Team other animals like birds and small rodents would likely eat antlions if they could
- Bugscope Team this is the tongue of the fly
- Student what is the antlions preadators
Bugscope Team LIzards, snakes, small mammals, other arthropods, and birds will all eat antlions
- Student its all hairy
Bugscope Team insects are very hairy. they use those hairs, which are attached to nerves underneath the exoskeleton, to sense what's going on in the environment around them. Some are just for feeling, others can be for tasting/smelling, and still others are for feeling if something is hot or cold
- Teacher why dose ant lions live in holes
- Teacher do you guys have a butterfly garden
Bugscope Team I don't have any garden right now...I live in an apartment with no backyard
- Student why do antlions eat ants
Bugscope Team ants are high in protein, and almost always when one organism eats another, it is for survival: food
- Teacher what is a earwigs
Bugscope Team An earwig is a type of insect with pinchers at the end of their abdomens
- Student Are we working
- Teacher how do you take pictures of bugs close up
Bugscope Team we are using an electron microscope to beam electrons at the insects in a vacuum chamber and collect the images as secondary electrons come back from the conductive coating on the insects' bodies
- Bugscope Team earwigs are insects that have pincer tails they use to protect themselves
- Bugscope Team mrs. hurton, if you are having trouble driving the scope, we can take control and drive around a bit
- Student where do ant lions live
Bugscope Team They live any where with sandy soil
- Bugscope Team anywhere
- Student so flys and stuff cant see?
Bugscope Team flies can see VERY well, they have compound eyes which have hundreds, thousands, of lenses: see preset #2 for a butterfly eye
- Student where do ant lions make their burrows
Bugscope Team In sandy soil
- Teacher what is your favrite bug
Bugscope Team My favorite insects are longhorned beetles. Those are the insects that I study
- Student Do ant lions eat other ant lions
Bugscope Team I bet their would if they could
- Student can they live on the beach annie
Bugscope Team They could. They tend to like more forested/desert areas
- Bugscope Team you can go to another preset if you would like
- Bugscope Team their exoskeleton makes it hard to feel what's going on. Like when your arm brushes up against something you feel it, they wouldnt be able to without their hairs
- Student how long do antlions live?
Bugscope Team i'm not sure cory-matt, but they have a larva stage where they live a season, at least
- Teacher was the ant lion cool
- Teacher How about we transfer control to Kyle and Braedon
- Student whats on the screen now
Bugscope Team to the middle left is still the hairy tongue the rest is the head
- Teacher i ment at the science place
- Student Cate, Do you like being a scietist now and when you were a kid?
Bugscope Team yes it is a lot of fun, i get to work with a lot of different things, like bugscope
- 9:23am
- Bugscope Team OK, Braedon and Kyle have control now
- Guest why dose the mouth have hair?
Bugscope Team the 'hairs' we see, called setae, or sometimes bristles, are often sensory -- they help the fly taste its food as well as feel it
- Guest is your job fun
Bugscope Team yes, some days it is a lot of fun. other days it's kinda like, meh. but that's totally normal. :)
- Student how big can the antlion grow?
Bugscope Team I have seen adult antlions that are about 3 inches long,
- Student why is the antlions' tongue hairy
Bugscope Team these hairs are for sensing the environment. all insects have these hairs, they are called setae (see-tee). some setae are chemosensory and help the insect to smell. i'm guessing some of the mouth hairs are for smelling stuff?
- Student what is your favorite kind of bug
- Guest do antlions only eat ants
Bugscope Team they can eat other small insects
- Bugscope Team this is a housefly, not an antlion
- Student is the scope cool

- Bugscope Team I just moved us to the owlfly larva head
- Student gggg
- Teacher why is the bug so scary but its so helpful
- Bugscope Team here is an owlfly larva, which is related to an antlion
- Student cate, do the antlions' feet burn
- Student is this an ant?
- Bugscope Team owlfly larvae are much like antlions
- Guest wow that is cool
- Teacher why are you doing this and do you like it
Bugscope Team This is fun for us. We do it because we like having the opportunity to show other people how the scanning electron microscope works.
- Teacher Bradeon & Kyle had a little computer trouble. How about we transfer control to Slade & Michael
- Guest what is this
- Bugscope Team you can see its jaws, which are set to close on its prey
- Bugscope Team this is an owlfly larva
- Bugscope Team slade and michael now have control!
- Teacher what is this picture of
Bugscope Team this is an owlfly larva head
- Student oh
- Student annie wats the biggest bug you have ever seen?
Bugscope Team There are stick insects in the tropics that are 9 inches long or more. There are huge longhorned beetles that I have seen in collections (about 4-5 inches long). Once I found a giant dead moth...its wingspan was around 8 inches.

- Teacher what is on the screne

- Guest what is the wierdest thing you have saw
- Student is that a any
- Student ant
- 9:28am
- Bugscope Team this is an owlfly larva
- Bugscope Team this is an owlfly larva
- Teacher dose your job get boring
Bugscope Team we think if our job is boring perhaps it is our fault -- we have lots of cool things to do and cool people to work with
- Bugscope Team great job focusing slade and michael!
- Student its weird lookin
- Student how do anylions give birth
Bugscope Team The females lay eggs...and little tiny antlion larvae hatch out.
- Student do you like being a scientist?

- Bugscope Team here is a wasp head

- Guest whats that
- Student look like it under water
- Teacher what is the weirdest thing you have sean
Bugscope Team It is sort of hard to say...I have been in graduate school a long time, and as I have learned about insects and what they do and how they live, things don't seem so strange any more.
- Bugscope Team these are crochets, which are tiny grasping hooks at the ends of caterpillar prolegs
- Student why do you think our butterfly didn't come out of its chrysallys
Bugscope Team It is hard to tell: could be it was too cold, or too hot, or something made a hole in it and bacteria got it
- Student what is that?
- Student what is that on the picture above

- Bugscope Team this is a caterpillar Cate found for you
- Bugscope Team ok, nicole and kayleigh have control now
- Student do antlions have teeth?
Bugscope Team Antlions have jaws that work like our teeth work.
Bugscope Team Antlions do not have teeth, but the sharp parts of their jaws may be hardened with calcium deposits, which help to make teeth hard

- Student is that the same thing but focused out

- Bugscope Team caterpillars have little hooks on some of their legs to help hang onto leaves
- Student what is that on the screen
- Guest what is this part?
Bugscope Team This is the side of a caterpillar
- Student whats the biggest preadator of the antlion???
Bugscope Team Probably a bear...
- Student Were back
- 9:33am
- Bugscope Team A bear would eat an antlion if it could find it.

- Bugscope Team bears will eat anything
- Guest what is the magnification?
Bugscope Team in the top right, you can see the mag, it is currently 36X
- Guest IS THAT A WORM
Bugscope Team that is a caterpillar
- Student when did it die?
- Student can all bugs bite
Bugscope Team not all bugs can bite -- some do not have jaws, they have sucking or sponging mouthparts -- and some do not even have mouths
- Teacher I like thepictures
- Student our screen is black
Bugscope Team hit refresh (F5)
- Bugscope Team if your image is black, try hitting refresh (F5)

- Student Why didn't the caterpiller hatch and become a BUTTERFLY!!!???
Bugscope Team It is hard to know exactly, without examining the contents of the chrysalis with other types of microscopes, different treatments. It is possible that the caterpillar caught a disease. It is possible that the caterpillar dried out or did not get the right nutrition when it was growing.
- Teacher how big is your micriscope
Bugscope Team it's the size of a desk, with lots of cables and stuff

- Student hwo has the magnafier?

- Teacher Can we transfer control to Breanna & Tiffany
Bugscope Team ok they have control

- Bugscope Team i think the preset moved a little here
- Student How do flys fly
- Bugscope Team tiffany and breanna now have control
- Student what is on the screen

- Student is that a hairy leg?
- Bugscope Team There are books and guides that can help you to identify butterflies and moths by their chrysali

- Teacher do you have fun at your job
- Guest hello again we got loged out
- Teacher is this aleg of an insect?what insectis this?
Bugscope Team this is a wasp
- Bugscope Team hello!
- 9:38am
- Bugscope Team the ovipositor of a wasp
- Student looks like a drill is it a tooth
Bugscope Team it does, doesn't it!
- Guest what is that
- Teacher do you have fun at your job
Bugscope Team yep, not all the time, but most times i do
- Student Hello Annie!
Bugscope Team HI!
- Teacher is the pointy thing a stinger?
Bugscope Team it is a stinger, in a way; it is used to sting caterpillars and lay eggs inside of them
- Student have ever scoped a water
- Student bug

- Bugscope Team it is barbed, probably to help cut into whatever it wants to lay eggs in

- Teacher have you ever got hurt at your gob
Bugscope Team sometimes you can get shocked, or cut, or scraped, or try to lift something too heavy....
- Student Have you ever scoped grass or water?
Bugscope Team we have looked at both actually. Our microscope can actually image droplets of water when we are using it in environmental mode, which is where we take the chamber to 100% relative humidity
- Student have you ever seen a germ on a big??????
Bugscope Team yes, you can see bacteria and stuff like that sometimes
- Teacher Please transfer control to Kleo, thanks
- Bugscope Team kleo has control now
- Guest do you have fun at your job
Bugscope Team yeah this is often fun
- Student is it scary to be a bugscope
- Student is that a wasp tail
Bugscope Team This is a wasp ovipositor...not really a tail. This is the part that the wasp uses to lay eggs.
- Student what is that picture on the screen

- Guest awsome

- Student can antlions hert you
Bugscope Team They can bite if you are not careful. It doesn't hurt too bad though.

- Guest does it really lay its eggs in a catipillar
Bugscope Team Yup, really really. Isn't that cool?
- Student have you ever scoped a water bug?
Bugscope Team we looked at a waterbug yesterday, and we often see waterboatmen
- Student what is that?
- Bugscope Team we weren't sure what this was, it has little hairs all around it
Bugscope Team If we decrease the magnification, I may be able to tell what it is
- Student How did you do that Cate?
- Guest is that a eyeball
- Guest what are we looking at
Bugscope Team we are not sure what this is -- it is on the chrysalis you sent
- 9:43am

- Bugscope Team it looks like a speaker
- Bugscope Team there, Annie
- Bugscope Team whoa, there's pairs of them!
- Student do you guys have fun at your job?
Bugscope Team yep!
- Bugscope Team I think they are spiracles. A pupa has to breathe
Bugscope Team they dont look like the other spiracles on here
- Guest hi
- Guest i your job hard
Bugscope Team sometimes, yes, but it's very rewarding to complete projects that are difficult
- Guest alex what is your favorite bug you have seen
Bugscope Team i really like mites, they are tiny little bugs that feed on bigger bugs
- Student What do you like to do most at your job at Bugscope Cate?
Bugscope Team i like to make the samples and talking with all of you!
- Teacher What are the two holes and the object that looks like a pointed nose?
- Guest is
- Bugscope Team we thought at first that they were spiracles as well, but we have more definitive spiracles on the other portion of the chrysalis
- Teacher Please transfer control to Sarah and Summer. Thanks
- Guest ur job must get confusing
- Student have you scoped a flee
Bugscope Team we have imaged fleas in the past
- Bugscope Team this is a moai
- Student what is yhat
- Bugscope Team summer and sara have control now
- Bugscope Team Hmmm...then I am not sure what they are.
- Bugscope Team it is a mystery
- Student you sond like yourl job do you
- Guest Do you have any bees or wasps
- Student cate, what is your favorite insect?
Bugscope Team hmm..praying mantises are pretty cool to look at, they have cool spikes on their forearms used to hold onto their prey and they have alien-looking heads!

- Student have you ever scoped tree bark?
Bugscope Team we imaged bark when we looked at those ants that burrow into branches/twigs and stick only their jaws out of the hole
- Bugscope Team Mites are arachnids--not insects!!!!

- Student How many Wasps did you mangify under the microscpe?

- Guest How many bugs do you have
- Teacher have you scoped a love bug?
Bugscope Team I don't think we have ever examined a love bug...they are not very common around here.

- Guest do a lot of insecets have teeth

- Student is there a really fat bug, like a cocoroch

- Student how long are your bugs
- 9:48am

- Student what is your favorite bug
Bugscope Team I like ticks, which are not insects, however
- Guest why do you think are crysilis didnt hatch
Bugscope Team It is hard to know. It could have had a disease. It could have dried out or not got the right nutrition as a caterpillar.
- Student have you ever scoped a scopiron?
Bugscope Team yep, scorpions are cool looking
- Teacher Please transfer control to Alex and Ashley. Thanks
Bugscope Team they have control
- Student what is that?
- Student what is your biggest bug
- Bugscope Team ashley and alex have control
- Guest are scropions bugs?
Bugscope Team Nope. Scorpions are arachnids.
- Student it looks like a back

- Student do you have cool bugs come in.

- Student what are you doing now

- Bugscope Team brochosomes are cool, they are only produced by the leafhopper

- Bugscope Team theres some brochosomes

- Bugscope Team the little balls
- Student what is that?
- Student what is that picture
- Student what is that

- Guest what is that

- Bugscope Team the pointy thing is a mosquito stylet, which is the part that cuts into your skin
- Student are bugs flexable?
Bugscope Team heh, yes, some are. most life has some flexibility to it
- Guest what are we looking at

- Student ok
- Guest cool
- Bugscope Team this is an ant claw
- Student Why do some incets have hair
Bugscope Team insects have hairlike structures called setae, or bristles, or trichae that help them sense their surroundings
- Guest o
- 9:54am

- Student what is your most interesting bug you have scoped?
- Student annie, how long have you been working with bugs?
Bugscope Team I have been in graduate school for six years. I will graduate in May.
- Teacher Please transfer control to Jordan and Cody. Thanks.
Bugscope Team they have control :)
- Bugscope Team jordan & cody have control
- Bugscope Team if you ever tease an earwig you will find that it is quite flexible as it tries to pinch you with its tail
- Student is anything you got befor sick
Bugscope Team as far as we know no insects have made us sick here

- Student scot what is your favorite bug?
Bugscope Team I like earwigs and ticks -- of course ticks are not insects

- Guest what is this
Bugscope Team we are seeing the body of the ant
- Student When an antlionshas babies

- Student are you an interne annie?
Bugscope Team No, I am a PhD student.

- Student is that the antlion
- Student our bugs our cool
- Bugscope Team Interns may make more money
- Teacher do you like bugscope day? and talking to our class?
Bugscope Team oh yeah, students ask some of the best questions
Bugscope Team we enjoy doing this
- Guest cool :)
- Student oh

- Bugscope Team fly head
- Guest how many bugs do you think you have worked with
Bugscope Team by now we have worked with a few thousand bugs, in over 420 sessions

- Student When antlions have babies what happens? Do the parinets leave the young or do they stay with there babies?
Bugscope Team Like more insects, the female antlion will lay eggs and leave them alone. Antlions do not provide parental care as far as I know.
- Guest is that eating a sead

- Student is bugscope a plublic website?
Bugscope Team yes, it is open to the public. but there are private parts of the site, only available to you and your teacher
- Guest what do ant lions eat
Bugscope Team they eat ants and other small insects

- Student is that the toung
- Bugscope Team you can see its mouthparts now
- 9:59am

- Student why do antlions live in the dirt?
Bugscope Team They only live in the dirt as larvae. As adults they fly around and hang out in trees and bushes and places like that.

- Bugscope Team this is one of the antennae of the fly

- Student Can Emily and Olivia be in controil?
Bugscope Team yep

- Guest are theese his eyes
- Student do you have a different bugs for us
Bugscope Team we have in the microscope a wasp, a fly, a beetle, a moquito, your chrysalis, your ant, a caterpillar, a couple owlfly larvae, and a butterfly
- Student what is that
- Student does antlions have teeth?
Bugscope Team if you go to the preset showing the owlfly larva you will see what an antlion's jaw looks like
- Teacher Please transfer control to Cory and Matthew. Thanks.
- Bugscope Team cory-matt has control
- Guest where do ants prefer to liev
Bugscope Team Ants live almost everywhere. They are particularly diverse and abundant in the tropics.

- Guest r those pricks
Bugscope Team those are sensory bristles on the head of the fly

- Guest are those pricks

- Student what is that
- Guest what are these lines
Bugscope Team The lines are long sensory setae.
- Guest wow cool
- Teacher do you have kids our age witch is 9,10
Bugscope Team None of us have kids (yet)

- Student awesome
- Bugscope Team you can see on the wasp head, the compound eye curves around the head so it can see all around it

- Student how do antlions go to the bathroom?
Bugscope Team The same way as you do. Their digestive system is fairly similar to ours.
- Guest thats a wasps head because that is pretty big

- 10:04am
- Student How can silver ants survive in the desert?
Bugscope Team I am not sure if I know what a silver ant is
- Guest hey

- Student do you like ansering peoples questions

- Student what are we looking at right now
Bugscope Team we are not sure what this is. we thought it was a spiracle but spiracles look a little different. and this has tiny setae like tenent setae on a claw that are normally used for holding onto things
- Teacher Please transfer control to Aditi and Gina1
- Guest cool
- Student what does a beetle eat
Bugscope Team There are hundreds of thousands of species of beetles. They eat almost everything that you can imagine--bacteria, plants, wood, dead animal bodies, flour, rotten fruit, dung.

- Bugscope Team aditi & gina have control
- Guest do antlions eat ants
Bugscope Team yes
- Teacher is this a catipiler
- Guest it looks like a black hole cool
- Guest The preset pictures are not up. Can we go to the mosquito
Bugscope Team go ahead and click on a preset to go to it
- Bugscope Team But, despite not knowing what a silver ant is, I can say that many insects have special adaptations that allow them to survive in the desert. They don't need to drink, they are only active during the coolest part of the day, they have thick coatings on their cuticle that keep them from drying out.
- Student is that his headj
- Student what do they use there tail for

- Student can ants defend the selves when they get atacted by antlions/
Bugscope Team They can try to sting and bite.

- Guest looks like grass

- Guest Our computer is not showing the presets right now
Bugscope Team oh sorry, try hitting refresh (F5)?

- Bugscope Team here we can see the female mosquito better
- Student is that a caterpillar
- Guest is this a misgito
- Bugscope Team this is the head of a female mosquito

- Student these are cool bugs
- Student Sorry we thought that was the name
Bugscope Team It probably is the name...I don't know all the different species of ants ;)
- Bugscope Team this is the tip of the stylet

- Student what is that
- Guest wow
- 10:09am
- Bugscope Team now you can see some of the scales on the body of the mosquito
- Bugscope Team So that is my fault, not yours!
- Bugscope Team these are kind of like feathers are to a bird
- Student cool
- Student i like all of your bugs
- Guest hello
Bugscope Team Hi Bre and Tif!
- Student are these scales?
Bugscope Team yes these are scales -- they would feel like powder to us

- Bugscope Team yep, these are scales

- Guest these r feathers right
Bugscope Team Nope, they are scales
- Student Don't say that it was our fault we asked
Bugscope Team no no no...that is not what I meant. I meant that it is MY fault that I don't know :)
- Guest are those spikes on the edges
- Guest what is that
- Student ih
- Guest hi cate
Bugscope Team hello
- Student is that still his scales
- Student what is this picture
Bugscope Team we are still on the mosquito scales
- Bugscope Team butterflies, moths, silverfish, mosquitos, and some other insects have scales

- Teacher Please transfer control to Braedon&Kyle. Thank you

- Bugscope Team i have been working with bugscope for a few years now

- Bugscope Team this is your flying ant
- Bugscope Team it would be handy to have scales if you flew into a spider web; you could just let them stick to the web while you flew away

- Student Annie are you learning about diffrent bugs like...Ants?
Bugscope Team I know quite a bit about ants. But, I don't study them, so I don't know all the different species. Ants are very important insects.
- Guest what is that
- Guest do you ever get groosed out
Bugscope Team i do sometimes, like we got this gigantic beetle larva from a school that was still wiggling around and trying to bite
- Bugscope Team now we can see the jaws, which go sideways compared to ours
- Bugscope Team the thing between the setae is a particle of dirt
- Guest he most bugs
- Student cool
- Teacher how long have you worked here?
Bugscope Team i think I have been here about 4 years now
- Bugscope Team scott does too, we got a gigantic millipede once that surprised him!
Bugscope Team Ooh yes that was frightening.
- Guest is our ant lion still alive
Bugscope Team we put it in the freezer yesterday so it might be, at the least it is frozen. Sometimes when we take them out of the freezer they wake up

- Guest do you have any beetles
Bugscope Team preset 14 is a beetle
- Student what is that circular thing
Bugscope Team that is dirt -- a tiny dirt clod
- Teacher why do the ants jaws go sideways?
Bugscope Team that is a great question. it may be that it is more efficient for a tiny insect to have its jaws work sideways compared to ours
- Guest do you have any flras
- Guest what is that
- Student are we the first to do this today
- Teacher Thanks so much for everything today. We really enjoyed looking at the images and asking you questions.

- Guest is there any animals that are only micrscpic to see
Bugscope Team There are some very very small wasps and flies and beetles that you would need a microscope to see. Maybe not an electron microscope though
