- Bugscope Team hello monagacci!
- Bugscope Team hello, welcome to bugscope!
- Student hello
- Student are we ready to go
- Bugscope Team we are still setting up for today's session at 8AM central time
- Bugscope Team yes, 9AM your time (east coast)
- Student yup cool
- 7:33am
- Student bug
- Bugscope Team sample in scope, starting vacuum
- Bugscope Team starting presets as soon as vac hits 1.2
- Bugscope Team this is the inside of the scope, picture taken from a CCD camera
- Bugscope Team once all the air is out of the chamber, then we can turn on the electron gun and gather images using electrons
- Bugscope Team HUGELY magnified :)
- 7:40am
- Bugscope Team vac ok, SE on, starting presets

- Bugscope Team hi ritter, welcome to bugscope, we are making presets right now

- 7:45am
- Teacher hi how do I get the kids on
Bugscope Team each student should be able to login as "student"
- Bugscope Team if you have LOTS of students, try doubling them up on a computer

- Teacher go to go thanks
- Teacher we have 58 kids on but I ll control the Qs
- Bugscope Team ok, that's more kids than we've ever had!
- Teacher ya tell me about it!! ha ha
- Bugscope Team ritter, there are too many students logged in, causing lots of lag on the server. is it possible to have the students double up on a computer?
- Teacher we are a wilderness eduction program and kids have been studing insects for a month
- Student What are those spiky balls
- Bugscope Team pollen
- Bugscope Team those spikey things are pollen
- 7:50am
- Student Thats so cool

- Student thats cool
- Student cool
- Student that is cool
- Student sweeet
- Student what is that
- Student what is the spike?
- Bugscope Team wasp ovipositor
- Bugscope Team ritter, is it possible to have 2 students per computer? we have too many logins right now, causing the server to slow

- Teacher ya hold on give me a min
- Bugscope Team ok

- Bugscope Team thanks for doing that -- sorry it was slowing us way down
- Bugscope Team cool! the server is starting to behave again!
- Bugscope Team yeah sorry, we've never seen a school have that many computer before
- Teacher ok how is that
- Bugscope Team we'll probably redo the software to cap a limit on the logins, and inform the teachers before hand
- Teacher ok
- 7:55am
- Teacher will this do for today
Bugscope Team YES, thanks! this is good
- Bugscope Team ok, we are still making a couple more presets, and then we'll be ready
- Bugscope Team the server is now able to catch up
- Bugscope Team and you'll see, once the students start asking questions, it'll still get crazy active...
- Student wat do stink bugs eat
Bugscope Team they eat plants

- Student Do they feed with those big pinchers
- Teacher ill control the amount of questions, they have to go through me first to ask
- Student alex could we c 1 one the compound eyes

- Bugscope Team we've got to make a couple more preset for ya, an assassin bug
- Bugscope Team once we are done with presets, we'll give control of the scope to mr. ritter, and then we'll be able to answer questions

- 8:01am

- Bugscope Team ok, one more preset and then we are ready!
- Bugscope Team sorry for the late start
- Teacher no problem

- Bugscope Team ok, session unlocked, ritter you should now see controls for the scope on your right
- Bugscope Team at any time you can click on a preset to move to that insect
- Bugscope Team you can also use magnify, navigation, focus and adjust
- Bugscope Team we can also give control to the students, if you wish, but only one person can control the scope at one time
- Bugscope Team do you all know what this is? we did not recognize it
- Bugscope Team it has dreadlocks for antennae
- Bugscope Team click to stop...
- Bugscope Team you click once to start moving, then click again to stop moving
- Teacher no i don't hope you would know

- Bugscope Team there ya go! nice job mr. ritter

- Bugscope Team our entomologist is not on yet this morning
- Bugscope Team this is a moth head, with the large compound eyes
- Bugscope Team this is the moth head
- Bugscope Team you can see its curled up proboscis
- Bugscope Team a compound eye is made up of hundreds of individual facets, called ommatidia, each one has a lens in it
- 8:06am

- Bugscope Team when it wants to unfurl it, it fills it with hemolymph, like a New Years' party favor

- Bugscope Team here we can see some scales, and the compound eye OOF

- Bugscope Team focus can be touchy, try going the other way if one way doesn't work
- Bugscope Team OOF = out of focus
- Bugscope Team you can see the scalebar on the lower left corner of the viewing screen
- Bugscope Team we've made the controls here as much the same as the real scope as possible, to make the experience realistic

- Bugscope Team the u is a Greek letter mu

- Bugscope Team see the antennae?
- Bugscope Team um = one micron = one millionth of a meter
- Bugscope Team the things on either side of the proboscis are palps
- Student hey scott, how much weight can a praying Mantis carry. Is there an item in comparison to the weight he could carry

- Bugscope Team Brian I don't know if anyone has tested praying mantises specifically for carrying weight proportional to their own mass

- Bugscope Team Yeah I have not found any info on it yet...
- Student okay thanx. I remember the ant could carry 20x it's size!
- Teacher scott what is the tube in the middle of the screen
- Bugscope Team this is the shield bug -- a stink bug
- 8:11am
- Bugscope Team that is the shaft of the proboscisi
- Bugscope Team proboscis

- Student why does a female mantis feed on a male after they mate

- Bugscope Team I think it's because they are so aggressive and hungry

- Bugscope Team if they're like mosquitos they want to have a meal in order to ensure that they can lay their eggs successfully

- Student alex can u put the dobsonfly on the scope
Bugscope Team yeah, we've got, it's preset number 7

- Bugscope Team speaking of laying eggs, that was the ovipositor

- Teacher we might need help getting on again
- Bugscope Team mr. ritter can you try clicking in the image to stop the motion?
- Bugscope Team mosquito saliva has anticoagulants in it, and your skin reacts to them
- Bugscope Team or click on a preset

- Bugscope Team ok, cool, now try clicking on a preset
- 8:16am
- Bugscope Team scott clicked on a preset

- Bugscope Team cool, this is a cicada antenna
- Bugscope Team to the north
- Bugscope Team this is the edge of the antenna of the cicada
- Bugscope Team a tiny portion of the cicada's body
- Student wat r those things in the little holes
- Bugscope Team those little holes are places in which there are chemoreceptors on the antenna

- Bugscope Team they are sensory pits for chemicals in the air
- Student why do the wings of a cicada make the clicking noise
Bugscope Team cicadas have loud noisemakers called "timbals" on the sides of the abdominal base, that's what makes the noise
- Student what are the rib like things in preset 7
Bugscope Team sorry chippy, i'm not sure!
- Student what exactly is a chemoreceptor?

- Student ok thanks thats interesting
- Bugscope Team a chemoreceptor senses chemical odors in the air -- smells
- 8:21am
- Student okay thanks. thats pretty cool.
- Bugscope Team Chippy I don't see the rib like things
- Student why does the assasin bug have?

- Student *why does it have the spikes on its back
- Bugscope Team Brian what was the question?
- Bugscope Team Oh the wheel?
- Bugscope Team Some assassin bugs don't have it

- Student yea sry my partner thought I was done and pressed go
- Bugscope Team hey we are cool Brian np
- Bugscope Team this is the proboscis on a stink bug
- Bugscope Team here you can barely see the tip of the proboscis
- Bugscope Team it is very sharp
- Bugscope Team anyone guess what the largest proboscis is in the world???
- Student What are we looking at right now
Bugscope Team proboscis on a stink bug
- Bugscope Team lower middle of the image
- Bugscope Team this is the ventral side of the stinkbug -- the underside
- Student whats a proboscis
Bugscope Team a proboscis is an elongated appendage from the head of an animal
- Bugscope Team where the tip of the proboscis is

- Bugscope Team proboscis is what we call the extended mouthpart
- Student O ok thanx
- Student is the largest proboscis of the goliath beetle?
- Student Scot do you know about how long the feeding tube is when it is completely straight out of the bugs face?
- Student why are some insects attracted to artificial light and why do they swarm by light
- Bugscope Team the largest proboscis in the world is on an elephant! it's the elephant trunk!
- Student is it possible to cut open one of the insects and see whats inside???
Bugscope Team oh yeah, entomologists do that all the time
- Student ahaha oh, we were off :]
Bugscope Team nice guess though, it's kinda a tricky question
- Student ok thanks
- 8:26am
- Bugscope Team you can see that it comes out to be nearly a centimeter if it is extended forward
- Student could you guys cut one open for us?
Bugscope Team well, it's not possible to interact with the insects once they are inside the scope. the scope is an electron microscope, able to magnify up to 800,000x. all the prep work (cuts, etc.) must be made before you put the sample into the scope
- Bugscope Team Dylan the microscope has a vacuum in it, and it would take awhile to do all of this and then recoat the sample with gold-palladium
- Student What are some popular insects in our state that we probably dont have here?
- Student why are insects attracted to artificial light
Bugscope Team well, one theory about moths being attracted to light is that they use a technique of celestial navigation called transverse orientation. this is essentially using the sun/moon as a guide to help direction when flying
- Bugscope Team the best we can do if you want to see the inside of an insect is to go to the Dobson fly
- Student "your state"
- Bugscope Team we have a lot of the same insects
- Student Alex, what is the most dominent species of insects?
Bugscope Team hmm, i have no idea! i've never been asked that. bees can be very aggressive, but all insects are trying to survive. i guess the most dominant is the species that wipes out others?
- Student o ok thanks
- Student ok than thanks anyway
- Student console, why are insects attracted to artifical light
- Bugscope Team ladybugs, wheelbugs, other beetles, flies
- Student Hey Scot what is your favorite insect
- 8:32am
- Bugscope Team when an insect is exposed to very bright light it is believed that is causes the wings to beat more quickly on the opposite side of the eye most affected, and the insect flies in a spiral pattern toward the lightsource
- Bugscope Team Ricky&Dom I like earwigs
- Bugscope Team But I like them mostly because they have, often, mites on them

- Bugscope Team ants may be the most dominant species on earth

- Bugscope Team many insects have defenses specifically against ants

- Bugscope Team I think you could argue many ways about which species is most dominant
- Bugscope Team if we drive to the south here we can see inside the exoskeleton of the dobsonfly

- Bugscope Team (me driving)

- Bugscope Team this is the underside of the huge head

- Student kids are on break Im showing teachers

- Bugscope Team ok, no problem

- 8:37am
- Bugscope Team this is part of the inside of the head of the dobsonfly
- Bugscope Team this is a tube -- a tracheal tube of some sort
- Bugscope Team try driving yourself
- Bugscope Team the deal about driving is that if you use click to drive you need to click to stop as well
- Bugscope Team and you have to be sparing in your commands or the system can get overloaded

- Bugscope Team I got here using click to center since I am not at the 'scope but using a computer at my desk

- Bugscope Team click to stop

- 8:43am

- Bugscope Team pollen!
- Bugscope Team adjust the contrast/brightness
- Bugscope Team this is the eye
- Bugscope Team of the fly

- Teacher kids are on break

- Bugscope Team this is a collapsed fly eye
- Bugscope Team with someone else's scale on it

- 8:48am
- Bugscope Team hey ritter, when do the kids come back?

- Teacher Would we be able to log out and then log back in in a few minutes with another faster computer?
- Bugscope Team sure if you would like
- Bugscope Team part of the deal is your connection speed

- Bugscope Team but it should be too bad. you are welcome to switch though, no prob, just make sure to logout first, then log back in with the same (or different) name

- Bugscope Team shouldn't be too bad i meant

- 8:53am

- Bugscope Team welcome back ritter!
- Teacher Hi. This should be better. The other laptop was very slow.
- Bugscope Team we are welcoming you back with a Japanese fan
- Bugscope Team okay, sounds cool.
- Bugscope Team try driving!
- Bugscope Team when controlling the scope, there still may be some lag, that's because you are controlling the scope live over the internet, and the scope is sending images to your browser (and every students browser as well). the more students logged in, the more images are sent, and that slows things down.
- Teacher The students will be back in 20 minutes. Are there any guests logged in that can try out the scope in the mean time?
- 8:58am
- Bugscope Team oh it's okay, we can just chill until you are ready
- Bugscope Team Greg try driving -- get some practice moving around, focusing, etc.
- Teacher Great. Go grab some coffee.

- Teacher oh ya 100 times better on this computer

- Bugscope Team coolness
- 9:04am

- Teacher this was realy cool i know how to guild it, our next vist with you will go so much easyer
- Teacher we have to go. thanks so much great program

- Bugscope Team no problem, glad you liked it!
- Bugscope Team that's it?

- Bugscope Team we'll see you again for another session in the future
- Bugscope Team feel free to fill out another application on the bugscope website: http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/apply

- Bugscope Team edge of the world

- 9:09am

- Bugscope Team this is close to the limits of the stage

- 9:15am
- Bugscope Team Hi ldob!
- Bugscope Team ldob would you like to drive? today's participants are done

- Bugscope Team you can choose from among the presets along the right side of the chat screen as well as using the controls
- 9:20am
- Bugscope Team ldob we are bailing out
- Bugscope Team unless we hear from you -- if you want to drive or ask questions we are glad to hang around
- Bugscope Team Ricky!
- Bugscope Team Do you want to drive?
- Bugscope Team This session was supposed to run 'til 10 our time, so we can let you control the 'scope if you'd like

- Bugscope Team okay ldob we are peeling off
