- Bugscope Team done with presets, session unlocked, we are ready
- 8:47am
- Bugscope Team hello ldob
- Guest hi, we are previewing, we are on for tomorrow at rockford lutheran
- Bugscope Team cool!
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Team we are waiting for the teacher for today's session to login
- Bugscope Team oh cool. BTW we have the samples you sent us
- Guest good
- Bugscope Team after the session is over, if you are still around, we can give you control of the scope so you can practice for a few minutes
- Bugscope Team this is a large spider, and Cate left it, after doing the presets, so we could see the fangs
- Guest we are going to go read about the scope and come back a little later
- Bugscope Team okie dokie
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Team hello ms tiffany :)
- Bugscope Team ms. tiffany, we are ready for you and your students anytime, if you have any questions please just ask us
- 8:55am
- Teacher does this spider bite?
Bugscope Team yes we think it is a grass spider, and Scott says he's been bit before
- Bugscope Team Ms Tiffany you may try driving anytime you would like. You can also choose from among the presets to select another insect or a different view of a sample
- Bugscope Team yes you can see its fangs
- Teacher can you tell if this a boy or girl spider?
- Bugscope Team they make big dome-like bumps on your skin, or at least they did for me
- Bugscope Team it is hard to tell but from the size of the palps, of which one is left, on the left, it looks like a boy
- Teacher does it bite with the fangs we are looking at?
Bugscope Team Yes

- Bugscope Team preset no. 14 will take you to the fangs as well

- Teacher what is this picture we are looking at?
Bugscope Team we are near the spider spinnerets (which we can't see). The cool thing about spiders is they have plumose setae (setae are insect hairs) that are different from most other insect hairs

- Bugscope Team the setae we see here are called 'plumose' setae because of their 3 dimensional shape, like a christmas tree

- Bugscope Team They are probably helpful in detecting vibration
- 9:00am
- Bugscope Team Ms Tiffany these are not just pictures -- you can drive the microscope

- Bugscope Team when you select a preset the microscope drives to that position
- Bugscope Team cool
- Teacher what is all the hair on the spider for?
Bugscope Team spiders in particular, and as Cate said, need to be very sensitive to vibration, and many of the hairs (setae) are mechanoreceptors that transmit noise/vibration signals to the spider's brain

- Teacher how many eyes do spiders have?
Bugscope Team they have 8 eyes, just like the number of legs on a spider

- Bugscope Team spiders have the ability to make a particular leg fall off if they, for example, detect venom moving into that leg. it prevents the venom from entering the body -- the cephalothorax
- 9:05am
- Bugscope Team when they jettison a leg, that is called autotomy

- Teacher does the leg grow back
Bugscope Team yes it can when they next molt.

- Teacher what does this kind of spider eat?
Bugscope Team most spiders are predatory, feeding on other insects or other spiders too... yum!
- Bugscope Team back there a second ago you could see the little toothlike elements the spider uses to hold its prey with its fangs
- Teacher does this spider build a web
Bugscope Team this kind of spider, if we have it identified correctly, builds a funnel-like web in the grass

- 9:10am
- Bugscope Team the funnel-like web may not be sticky
- Bugscope Team Annie!
- Bugscope Team Hello!!

- Bugscope Team Annie is our entomologist, but she also knows about lots of other critters, like spiders
- Teacher why is this called a stink bug?
Bugscope Team A stink bug releases a smelly liquid from glands on it abdomen when it is disturbed. The smell is usually kind of like rotten fruit.

- Bugscope Team It is pretty stinky

- Teacher how many legs does a stink bug have?
Bugscope Team they have 6 legs
- Teacher what does a stink bug eat?
Bugscope Team Stinky bugs either feed on plant and fruit juices. Some are predatory and they feed on other insects.

- 9:16am

- Teacher where do they live?
Bugscope Team They live in many different natural habitats. They live all over the world, except in very cold places.

- Bugscope Team I found a stink bug on the outside of my front screen door this summer, and I was looking at it from the inside. When I got too close, it started to excrete a droplet of smelly liquid

- 9:21am
- Bugscope Team this is such a cool-looking fly
- Teacher does a fly really poop everytime it lands
Bugscope Team Not every single time...only when it has to "go"

- Bugscope Team You can usually see fly poop--it is a small brown speck of dirt
- Bugscope Team flyspeck
- Bugscope Team depends on the type of fly of course....mosquito poop is usually sort of liquidy

- Bugscope Team and some flies don't eat as adults, so they don't poop at all

- Bugscope Team entomologists call poop "frass"
- Bugscope Team this is a tgreat view of the compound eye of the fly, and to the left you can see one of its antennae

- 9:26am

- Bugscope Team fly's often have HUGE compound eyes - like this one does

- Bugscope Team the compound eye has hundreds to thousands of facets -- little lenses -- called ommatidia

- Bugscope Team one way compound eyes are different from our eyes is that they are much more sensitive to movement; insects with complex compound eyes like that see changes in the space around them very quickly, and they can then respond more quickly
- Teacher thank y ou for allowing us to look at these bugs but my four year olds are loosing interest
- Bugscope Team it makes it hard to catch them
- Teacher thank you again
- Teacher goodbye!
- Bugscope Team no problem -- Thank You for logginb in today!]
- Bugscope Team Thank you!
- Bugscope Team thanks for using bugscope today, i hope they learned a lot :)
- Bugscope Team ms tiffany, all the chat and images are available anytime at:
- Bugscope Team http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/members/2008-121
- 9:31am
- Bugscope Team that web page is available to you and your students to review anytime, so you can study your session materials after the session is over
- Bugscope Team the link to your member page is also included in the original email we sent to you after you applied to bugscope
- Bugscope Team ok, ldob, you have control of the scope now
- Bugscope Team ldob we have given you control of the microscope if you would like to test
- Bugscope Team you should see controls on your right of the image, magnify, nav, focus and adjust

- Bugscope Team beetle face
- Bugscope Team you can see a couple of palps
- Bugscope Team mandibular and maxillary palps
- Bugscope Team palps are used to manipulate/taste food

- Bugscope Team and the tips of the jaws, I think, here
- 9:36am
- Guest this is tricky
Bugscope Team you get used to it after a while. we've made the controls a lot like it is controlling the real ESEM, for a more realistic experience
- Bugscope Team lots of dirt and lots of sensory setae

- Bugscope Team you seem to be doing well

- Bugscope Team if you want real fine control of navigation, i suggest you use "click to center" instead of click to drive

- Bugscope Team you might have to take the mag down to see where you are

- Bugscope Team be sure and try a preset, if you have time; we have plenty of time
- Bugscope Team yeah, make sure to use the magnify. often it's easier to find what you are looking for by first lowering the mag, then moving, then increase mag to focus in on what you want to see

- Bugscope Team the images you collect will go to Ms Tiffany's page, and she will be able to access them later, as could you if you wanted to look in on her session later

- Bugscope Team yes, and when you have your session, all your chat and images will be saved to your own member page
- 9:42am
- Guest Thanks, I will see you tomorrow.
- Bugscope Team ok, see you tomorrow!
- Bugscope Team cool Thank You!
- Bugscope Team see you tomorrow:)
- Bugscope Team nice session everyone. rxl stopped, session disabled, session locked. bye bye!
