- Teacher heyas. The class will be logging in in about 25 mins
- Bugscope Team okay we are about halfway done with presets
- Teacher cool, no worries. The kids take a little to get in and log on. Looks like its going to be a good session

- Bugscope Team I am going to try to bring my laptop down to the Cameron lab and see if I can connect to the network there.
- Teacher cool. Gotta do some business. See you all in a little bit.

Bugscope Team we are looking at the claw of a moth
- Student hi cate
- Bugscope Team this is a beetle we did not recognize
- Student that is cool

- Bugscope Team I was lost on the sample
- Bugscope Team see the scales?
- Bugscope Team and one of the claws
- Student give controll to mr. miller
- Bugscope Team moths, butterflies, skippers, silverfish, and very few other insects have scales
- Bugscope Team Mr M has control now.
- Bugscope Team these samples are all coated with several nm of gold-palladium
- Bugscope Team to keep them from charging up with electrons.

- Bugscope Team but this, where you see the sort of stripe and the very white parts, is charging up

- Bugscope Team this is a fruit fly
- Bugscope Team Cate is gonna be on me 'cause it is sooo dark
- Student what is it?

- Bugscope Team sorry
- Bugscope Team but you can make it brighter

- 4:42pm

- Student its ku
- Student DO YOU LIKE YOUR JOB
Bugscope Team I like my job a lot. I am a graduate student working on my PhD in entomology

- Bugscope Team here is a moth antenna
- Student can we zoom in on the eye
- Bugscope Team yeah this is a cool job

- Student whoa.....

- Student oh yeah i got it rigt
- Student what is it
- Student is it an eye
- Student that totally looks like an eye with hair
- Bugscope Team yes this job is cool because we do different stuff all of the time and we get to work with cool microscopes
- Bugscope Team and we don't have to ever go outside
- Student how do u put the insects on the screen
- Student i think it is a mite
- Student why does it look like that
- Bugscope Team the spiracle is basically an insect nose
- Student IT LOOKS LIKE A HARRY EYE

- Bugscope Team it uses it to breath
- Student hola
- Bugscope Team the insects are in the electron microscope, in a vacuum chamber
- Bugscope Team Technically the word "bug" only refers to insects in the order Hemiptera. Hemiptera includes things like box elder bugs, wheel bugs, bed bugs, and other insects with sucking mouthparts and incomplete metamorphosis.
- Student ack!
- Bugscope Team LONGHORNED BEETLE!

- 4:47pm
- Student thats cool
- Student omg
- Student how does it see
- Bugscope Team they are so cute
- Student ahhhhhhhhhhh
- Student look
- Bugscope Team so when you go to a preset, the microscope drives to that position on the stub and the electron beam passes across the sample
- Student what kind of things you do
- Student so wat good
- Student it looks lyke a chiuauah
- Student that looks like a dog

- Bugscope Team This is the face of a longhorned beetle in the family cerambycidae.

Bugscope Team MORE than $600,000
- Bugscope Team this is a beetle we did not recognize

- Student why are they so small the hair

- Student annie wat made u start your job at bugscope
Bugscope Team I started volunteering with Bugscope in 2004. I was doing a lot of microscopy at the time, and I really liked the idea of Bugscope. I like the opportunity to talk to people about insects.

- Bugscope Team the hole is a pit that has what are likely chemoreceptors in it
- Student it can taste with it's feet? O_o
- 5:07pm
- Student how do they get used to their habitab
Bugscope Team Well, most insects are "born" in their natural habitat. There is not too much to get used to. If they somehow are moved to a habitat other than their own, often they cannot find the right food or deal with differences in temperature or weather. In those cases, the insect usually dies.
- Student what is that?

- Student whats up stormtroopers

- Student ooo! sorry
- Student why does it look like a hole?
- Student whats that?\

- Student wat up

- Student thats soo hairy

- Student who ab2
- Bugscope Team ok A&A
- Student whats it do?
- Student what does this thing eat?
Bugscope Team Ground beetles usually are either predators (eating other insects and arthropods) or decomposers (eating dead things or rotten vegetation).

- Guest wat kind of pollen
- Student diego
- Student annie wats the steps in bugscope
Bugscope Team Well, first the teacher fills out a proposal, and then we schedule a session, and then the teacher sends us insects, then we put them in the microscope, and then we have a session.
- Bugscope Team ok sadgirl has it
- Guest cool
- Student so they send in plants
- Bugscope Team bilateral symmetry means that if you cut it in half the right way, the halves would match
- Student or not
- Student cate what is your favorit part of your job
- Student i like plants
- Student what is the pollen stuck on?
- Bugscope Team a mirror kind of match

- Student cool i guess..

- Student how muck do u guys get paid 4 to us?
- Student wat type of habitat does a fly have?
Bugscope Team There are LOTS of types of flies. Some flies suck the blood of larger animals, so they would live in barns or near houses or someplace like that. Some flies are decomposers, so they would live on rotten animals or rotten plants or on poop. There are some flies that eat plants or fruit. There are almost as many flies as there are habitats!
- 5:17pm

- Guest wow this is wonderful wat is it
- Student whoa

- Student that looks like a mouth
- Bugscope Team we volunteer our time for this

Bugscope Team Hundreds of thousands, probably
- Bugscope Team that is the thing that looks like a tiny mouth
- Student what do fly eat
Bugscope Team Different types of flies eat different things. Some kind of fly probably eats every single thing.

- Student what would happen if we didnt have bees

- Student that cool
- Bugscope Team the hairs help insects feel their environment

- Student ohhh
- Bugscope Team that is the honeybee

- Student 85/
- Teacher please give control to C&A
- Guest its a honey bee
- Student can you please give me an example?
Bugscope Team Mosquitoes are flies and the females eat blood. Blow flies eat dead animals and poop. Apple maggot flies eat apples and onion maggot flies eat onions. Robber flies eat other insects. I could go on and on!
- Student what eats bees?
Bugscope Team Umm...spiders will eat bees. There are a few birds that eat bees. Skunks and bears will eat bees for sure.

- Student bees fallow me around and i dont know why ??
- Student they do!!
- Student maybe because u have sugar on u
- Bugscope Team as long as you arent by their nest or irritation the bees themselves, they should be pretty harmless around you. There are also stingless bees in some area which are pretty cool
- Student whats that?
Bugscope Team the 3 bumps in the middle are the ocelli, they are simple eyes that use the sun for navigation. like a built in GPS

- Student me too

Bugscope Team it uses them to triangulate using light where it is
- Student so it has 5 eyes
- Student OMG
- Student thank you for the example. Wat type of animals do the bettles like to eat oh ya can you give me an example of the animals that a bettle eats?
Bugscope Team Predatory beetles will eat little springtails or the larvae of other insects (caterpillars, maggots, etc.) They will pretty much eat anything that is smaller than them and that can't get away.

- 5:38pm
- Teacher yes, nice work on the preset! Amazing!
- Bugscope Team Mr M when we do this we work at a long working distance in the 'scope so the kids can see more of a given insect at low mag
- Bugscope Team so when we want to get much better resolution we move samples to a shorter working distance
- Teacher cool i see.
- Teacher it is easy to get lost close up
- Bugscope Team just now I did not move closer but just made a couple of adjustments to the controls at the 'scope
- Bugscope Team when we see things like brochosomes it would always be best to work up close
- Bugscope Team because they are so small and cool-looking
- Teacher i have no image . should i log back in?
- Bugscope Team refresh
- Bugscope Team try refreshing your browser
- Bugscope Team that should do it
