Bugscope Team It can really hurt when they bite. Some ants can also sting--and that hurts too.
- Student ok
- Student what are you talking about ?
- Bugscope Team this is one of the limbs of a velvet ant
- Student how do ants have babies
Bugscope Team Like most insects, ants hatch from eggs. Unlike most insects though, all the eggs in a single colony are produced from a queen ant. Worker ants generally do no lay eggs.
- Guest Ah.
- Bugscope Team skater you have control

- Student is true i'm not leslie

- Student ye\
- Student yes

- Guest They lay their eggs inside ant nests, and then the larval velvet ants eat the larvae of the ants.

- Student nasty people
- Student a hews leslie?
- Student franky baboso

- Student answer dx baby
- Bugscope Team in part because of all the setae, it is hard to get this little dudette to look good
- Student hos bug

- Student WhOz SkATeR??
- Student go home Bestfriends
- Student no soi leslie

- Student aaaaaaaa

- Student ok we no
- Student how can u tell if they are poisonous or not?
Bugscope Team Most insects with stingers have venom which they inject when they sting. Most insect stings are not generally harmful to humans. A sting may itch or burn for a while, but usually there are no long term effects unless you have an allergy
- Student why did u write dumbo kids you popular kds only

- Student nomas keria ablarles
- Student what is that big thing
Bugscope Team That is the ant's abdomen
- Student do you know what that big thing is for?
Bugscope Team The abdomen of an insect contains the digestive and reproductive organs. Worker ants do not reproduce, so their reproductive organs are reduced (generally speaking).

- Guest That is the abdomen, or the gaster, to really be accurate.

- Student what is that

- Student hahaha yeah they are?hahahah h20
- Student it's the abdomen

- Student is the popular kids joceline
- Student i Don't know what is the big thing
- Student idk
- Bugscope Team yes the ant abdomen is called a 'gaster'
- Student no!

- Guest In ants, bees and wasps part of the abdomen is fused to the thorax (the middle body segment), so what looks like the abdomen is really only part of the abdomen. It's called the caster.
- Student WAT R THOSE BALLZ?
- Bugscope Team this is the top of the head of a spider
- Student eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Bugscope Team these are some of the spines on the velvet ant limbs, again
- Student y do u want to no
- Student nooooo
- Student they look like fangs or hair
- Student wat do they use there spines for
Bugscope Team The spines are different types of setae. The setae help the insect/spider to sense its environment through the hard exoskeleton. Some setae are mechanosensory, some are chemosensory.
- Student or bannannas

- Student OHH IS THERE ALOT OF ANTS WE GAVE TO YOU?
- Student ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
- Student are they used for anything?
Bugscope Team The photos?
- Student Y R THYERE LITTLE HAIRS?
Bugscope Team The hairs (or setae as we call them) generally help the arthropod to sense its environment. Some setae sense smell or taste, or they can help to defend the arthropod
- Student whoz mariza
- Bugscope Team the images are yours, for your class
- Bugscope Team you can access them later

- Student mohawk?
- Bugscope Team that's why it is good to drive around and collect lots of images

- Teacher thanks for stopping by chris
- Teacher 4th period is coming in
- Bugscope Team yeah Thanks Chris!
- Teacher Scott, do we have other presets for 4th period. They were looking at antennae and I sent some cool ones
- Guest Sure. Bye.
- 1:36pm
- Bugscope Team I am sorry we have all we had time to make for today
- Bugscope Team somewhere in here there is an insect that has placoid sensilla on the antennae, and I forget which it is
- Bugscope Team really cool too

- Bugscope Team Yay!
- Bugscope Team They're on the velvet ant

- 1:43pm
- Teacher Too bad, I sent some awesome antennae
- Bugscope Team this is pretty cool
- Teacher We'll do the best with what we have
- Bugscope Team not something you get to see often
- Teacher Please give me control so I can show the kids how to use the scope
- Bugscope Team Cate put spiders and ants on the stub for today.
- Bugscope Team You have it now.
- Bugscope Team Placoid sensilla are only found in hymenoptera (so far)
- Teacher So there are other insects on the stub not on the presets?
- Bugscope Team Mr M I am sorry we don't have the antennae on this stub
- Bugscope Team just spiders and ants
- Bugscope Team and the spider eggs and egg sac
- Teacher Our session for spiders was tomorrow do we use this stub again?
- Bugscope Team I think I put at least a part of each insect/spider on as a preset
- Bugscope Team we won't use this again
- Bugscope Team brb
- Bugscope Team Okay I see that we have a bunch of insects with cool antennae for tomorrow
- Bugscope Team this is the antenna of the velvet ant, up close
- Student what is this
- Bugscope Team so you can see a couple of placoid sensilla
- 1:48pm
- Bugscope Team We are looking at the antenna of a velvet ant
- Bugscope Team placoid means they are plate-like
- Student what isthis
- Student this is an antena
- Student what is this
- Bugscope Team insects and other similar arthropods need to be able to sense their surroundings, and they have setae and sensilla that allow them to do that
- Bugscope Team they can sense temperature, wind or touch, and chemicals (scents) in the air
- Student cactus
- Student what are the holes in the middle
Bugscope Team The small round holes are places where setae rubbed or fell off. They are sockets for the setae
- Bugscope Team some of the setae are analogous to rat or cat whiskers
- Bugscope Team some insects can also sense sound
- Bugscope Team through vibration
- Bugscope Team if you take the magnification down you can see where we are
- Student what is that leaf lik thang
- Bugscope Team on the velvet ant antenna

- Bugscope Team there are microsetae here as well as dirt and the placoid sensilla

- Bugscope Team now you can start to see where we are on the antenna
- Student what do the hairs help with

- Student what do the hairs do
- Bugscope Team the velvet ant is glowing because it is charging up with electrons

- 1:53pm

- Student is a velvet ant
- Student =]
- Student what type of ant is it
- Student why does it look that way
- Student hi
- Student chris
- Bugscope Team sometimes we cannot get a sample well grounded with gold palladium and it glows like this
- Student chris

- Student do nit write silly things
- Bugscope Team all of the samples we are imaging today are coated with a few nanometers of gold-palladium alloy
- Bugscope Team it makes them look silvery
- Bugscope Team to the eye
- Bugscope Team in the 'scope of course all we see are these gray scale images

- Student so um is it hard to answer us
- Bugscope Team the samples we are looking at are inside a vacuum chamber
- Student what are the things that look like sponge?
Bugscope Team I don't know which things you are talking about---can you be more specific?
- Student oh why do you need to coat a few nanometers
- Teacher How do the sensilla help the velvet ant?
Bugscope Team The sensilla on the antenna of the velvet ant most likely serve several functions. Some sensilla give the velvet ant information about its physical surroundings, the temperature, humidity. Some sensilla allow the velvet ant to taste or to smell. Sensillar can also keep away dirt.
- Bugscope Team sometimes it is hard to answer, yes
- Student do u injoy ur job????
- Student yea do u
- Student why is it hard to answer kids ?
- Bugscope Team lexie the sample needs to be conductive, and so we use a sputter coater to put a thin coat of gold-palladium on the surface of the sample
- Student what is it
- Bugscope Team lexie sometimes the questions come so fast we can't catch them all
- Bugscope Team and some questions require longer and better answers than we have time for
- Teacher Why dont many insects have these kind of sensilla
Bugscope Team I am not sure why. Perhaps it is a special adaptation in some of the "higher" hymenoptera
- Student hey mr. do you likeyour job
- Bugscope Team sometimes of course we don't know the answers
- Student do you see the stuff that isin the side of the hairs
- Bugscope Team Yes this is a cool cool job
- Teacher Please give control to smalls
- Student oh i still think thats cool
- Student ohh cool
- Bugscope Team some of the holes are where there used to be microsetae

- Bugscope Team and those placoid scales may be temperature sensors, not sure
- 1:58pm
- Bugscope Team could also be chemosensors

- Student is a leg
- Student is there lots of kids who go on this web site
- Student whaT THE c0o3st thinG @b0uT UR JOB?
- Bugscope Team this is the head of one of the spiders

- Student wat is this
- Student you guys stop moving the picture!!
- Bugscope Team we can see four of the spider's eyes here
- Student cool
- Bugscope Team brb
- Student why do the spiders need so many eyes
Bugscope Team That is a good question. Different eyes very likely sense different things, light, movement, length of the day. I am not sure if anyone knows for sure.
- Student hi amor
- Student do spiders have antena
Bugscope Team Nope, no antennae

- Student ok scott
- Student is it a eye =.>
- Student wuz up amor
- Student Do spiders have anntenas
- Student you guys stop writing silly things! >:(
- Student what kind of spider is thhis and is it poisunous
Bugscope Team I am not sure what type of spider this is, but we are pretty sure it is not poisonous. There are actually very few dangerous spiders in the US. The black widow spider, and the brown recluse are the two main poisonous spiders here. I am not sure if there are any others.

- Student ARE THOSE WRINKLES ON THE SPIDER

- Student what are those things that look like hairs?

- Bugscope Team spiders don't have antennae but they have lots of plumose setae that give them a lot of sensitivity to vibration
- Bugscope Team the balls are four of the eyes
- Student what part of the spider is this
- Student what the hardest part of working for bugscope..............?

- Bugscope Team you can see that there is some kind of dried film that is cracking on the spider's head there
- Student this is cool
- Student why is it cracking
- Student what is that!
- Student STOP DOING THAT =P
- Bugscope Team the hardest part is getting the samples to look good sometimes

- Student what is that?

- 2:03pm

- Student hi chris

- Bugscope Team this is one of the ants

- Bugscope Team we will have been going 10 years in March next year
- Student thats super kool?☺= #

- Student Cool!!
- Student is that the mouth??
- Bugscope Team the microscope has its own power, water, air, nitrogen, AC, and its own room

- Student wow that is awesome it seems really fun i would like to study that

- Student ohh thats cool

- Student Scott is the antenaa?
- Bugscope Team I don't think it takes that much power, but we are running at 5000 Volts right now
- Student whos jokers ?

- Student THIS IS VERY COOL

- Bugscope Team only microWatts of powere
- Bugscope Team powere
- Bugscope Team power

- Student who are you
- Student whats that
- Student What do the hairs do?
Bugscope Team The hairs help the insect/spider to sense its environment
- Student who r u
- Student did you guys make the microscope? or did you buy it
- Bugscope Team here we are so close I don't know just where we are
- Teacher please give control to ironbrown
Bugscope Team I am not sure what type of spider this is, but we are pretty sure it is not poisonous. There are actually very few dangerous spiders in the US. The black widow spider, and the brown recluse are the two main poisonous spiders here. I am not sure if there are any others.
- Student they made it i thinkl
- 2:08pm
- Student do you need a scolarship to have your job
Bugscope Team No, that is the nice thing about jobs...they pay you, you don't need a scholarship
- Bugscope Team we bought this 'scope and I was hired to run iot
- Bugscope Team it
- Student HOW OLD ARE YOU=>
Bugscope Team I am 27

- Student Dammmm!!!!
- Student x)
- Bugscope Team I like earwigs, flies, ticks although they are not insects
- Student dats VERY expensive
- Student ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
- Student Earwings are not insects??
Bugscope Team Earwigs ARE insects. They have six legs, two antennae, compound eyes and two set of wings. That qualifies them as antennae
- Bugscope Team this is another antennae with all kinds of sensory setae on it
- Student Cool
- Student do you have any crabspiders
- Student why does this insect have those holes
- Bugscope Team earwigs are insects but ticks are arachnids
- Student ticks arent insects then what are they♥☺♥☺
- Student COOL DO YOU LIKE WHAT YOU DO =/.
- Student Thanks Scott
- Bugscope Team hahah
- Bugscope Team INSECTS
- Bugscope Team hahahaa
- Student hi osvaldo

- Bugscope Team SCOTT!
- Student hi alaxis

- Student have you ever ate a bug????

- Student lobsters ARE insects!!!
Bugscope Team Nope, too many legs, too many antennae, and no wings. Lobsters are NOT insects.
- Student ok no

- Student Wowww!!
- Student ARE YOU BLOND

- Bugscope Team the tiny dots are bubbles in the doublestick carbon tape

- Student what type of bugs had u ate
Bugscope Team I have eaten ants, crickets, water bugs, caterpillars and meal worms

Bugscope Team um, no

- Bugscope Team here we can see the business end of the spider
- Teacher please give control to kermit the piggy

- Student nothing ilke them i was wondering if you do
- Bugscope Team the fangs are in the middle
- Student WHY ARENT FISH INSECTS
Bugscope Team Fish are vertebrates: they have vertebrae and backbones. They do not have exoskeletons, they do not have antennae, they do not have wings. They are definitely not insects.

- 2:18pm
- Bugscope Team these are the chelicers, the chelicerae
- Student are there things that are insects that have to do with monkeys?
- Bugscope Team the fangs are below
- Student â•©cus thier fishâ•©
- Student WHY IS THERE A CRACK RITE THERE??? IS THAT TO SEPERATE THE EYES
- Student Have you ate earthworms??
Bugscope Team No, they don't seem so interesting. I have many other things that I would rather eat.
- Student why does it look like a cactus?

- Bugscope Team when a male spider does not want to get bitten by a female spider he puts web right here, where we are
- Student have you ever seen a spider pig

- Bugscope Team so the female cannot open the chelicers and bite him
- Student NO

- Student eww
- Student NOT ME
- Bugscope Team there are the fangs at the bottom of the chelicerae
- Student THIS IS VERY INTERESTING
- Student are you and anne marred

- Bugscope Team no.
- Bugscope Team I could never keep up with Annie.
- Student where do you get these magnifinescopes
- Student do u like her
- Student how can u tell the difference between a female spider and a male spider? can you tell by anntenaes
Bugscope Team You can tell by the length of their palps--which are part of their mouths. Males have longer palps than females.
- Bugscope Team Scott and I are friends
- Student IF YOUR THAT BORED THEN TALK TO YOUR FRIEND DNT GO ON AND SAY HI ON THE COMPUTER
- Bugscope Team you can tell by the palps, sometimes
- Student what up rockstars
- Student how sweet hehe
- Student friendssss
- Student what are palps

- Student when was bugscope invented
Bugscope Team in 1999.
- Bugscope Team That's the short answer
- Bugscope Team yeah 1999
- Student so is this a male or female and where is the papls
- Student what month
- Student HOW LONG DOES IT TKE FOR A SPIDERS EGGS HATCH
Bugscope Team Many spider eggs are deposited in the fall and they hatch the following spring. Just like in Charlotte's Web
- Bugscope Team I think this is a girl spider

- Student Do the male spider have babies??
Bugscope Team Well, even girl spiders don't have babies. They lay eggs.
- Bugscope Team the palps are long but not bulbous like I think they are for males usually
- Student PLEASE TAKE US TO PRE SET 7
- Student do u 2 get paid for doin dis

- Student CRIS AND BABY PHAT ARE GOING OUT
- 2:23pm
- Student NAAAAAAAAA
- Bugscope Team Annie does this for free.

- Bugscope Team they are dry, and the little spideys are gone
- Bugscope Team Chas was a special circumstance
- Bugscope Team yes Lexie

- Student GAP

- Student cool
- Student HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A SPIDER TO HATCH ITS EGGS??

- Bugscope Team you can see the web that wrapped up the egg mass
- Teacher please give control to animals21
- Bugscope Team this is a closeup view of the web

- Teacher ooops animals 24
- Student HI NICOL
- Bugscope Team when you see one of those little white balls that spiders leave around -- this is one
- Student r those bubble gum pices
- Bugscope Team Spider egg masses are deposited in the fall and they hatch the following spring (usually)
- Student WHATS THIS???

- Bugscope Team that is web, used to make the egg case
- 2:28pm
- Student what are those circles?
- Student can i apply for a job after college
- Bugscope Team animals247 is driving

- Student is it sphagetti and chesse balls

- Student what are those circles!
- Bugscope Team by the time you get out of college there may be another job here
- Student IS IT TRUE THAT AFTER A SPIDER HAS ITS BABIES IT DIES
Bugscope Team Well, not immediately, but soon after, probably, yes.
- Student thats's a cereal ?
- Student ????/
- Bugscope Team the circles I think are little balls of web silk

- Bugscope Team there are tons of them on the egg surfaces

- Student cool!!!

- Bugscope Team Most of the people who work for Bugscope have other responsibilities at the Beckman Institute. Some people help researchers learn to use the microscope, some of us are students and our job is to conduct our own research, some of us are systems administrators. We all come together to do Bugscope, but it is not our full time job.
- Student THIS IS COOL BUT WAHT ARE THE STICKS THAT ARE HOLDING THE BUBBLES
- Student can ants or spiders breast feed?
Bugscope Team Nope. Only mammals produce milk for their young. There are a few species of flies that do feed their larvae "milk" which is produced from glands on the inside of the female's body. Then the fully grown larvae are actually "born." That is a really special circumstance though (in Tse Tse flies).

- Student UR FUNNY ROCKET
- Student \
- Bugscope Team no they can't breastfeed
- Bugscope Team they are more likely to eat their babies in many cases
- Student hahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhaa

- Student but y not? dont they have female body parts
- Student O SO WHY DOES IT LUK LIKE STICKS INSTED OF STRING

- Student whos dolphins95

- Student Scott.. do you have kids?
- Bugscope Team nope no kids
- Student but dont they have female body part?
Bugscope Team They have ovaries and they lay eggs, but they lack breasts from which to feed. Obviously.
- Student Hi raven and Alexiss
- 2:33pm
- Bugscope Team I think of the grad students as my kids sometimes
