- Bugscope Team session enabled, rxl started, vac pumping
- Bugscope Team elizabeth might login early this morning
- Bugscope Team we
- Bugscope Team we'll try to finish up presets early, so she can test out the interface, if she wants to
- Bugscope Team got it Holmes Wood
- 7:40am

- 7:50am

- 7:56am

- Bugscope Team hi mrs. d!
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Team we are making presets, and happen to be looking at the wendy's salt right now
- Bugscope Team Good morning MrsD!
- Teacher Hi, I'm teaching another class right now, so I'm only going to be on and off here
- Bugscope Team we have the controls locked just now, until we get the presets done, or mostly done

- Bugscope Team multitasking
- Bugscope Team no problem, we'll be here
- Teacher Were you able to use some of my bugs, or were they too far gone?

- Bugscope Team well, we didn't get any of them in the sample, sorry
- Teacher That's ok
- Bugscope Team a small miscommunication between the sample prep folks
- Bugscope Team but we've got a nice collection of stuff for ya
- Teacher It looks like it!
- 8:01am
- Bugscope Team we've got a praying mantis, wood louse, japanese beetle, house fly, millepede, beetle, moth, owl fly larva, skeeter, fruitfly

- Bugscope Team and a mosquito too!

- Teacher Good, I was looking forward to seeing the japanese beetle... The mosquito should be very interesting!

- 8:08am

- Bugscope Team session is unlocked, you now have control mrsd, any questions let us know
- Bugscope Team you should see controls on the right side in your browser window (magnify, navigation, focus and adjust)
- Bugscope Team below that are the presets, you can click any preset any time, and it'll take you to that location
- Bugscope Team yeah you are ready to roll
- 8:14am
- Teacher Great, this class ends at 8:20, so I should be done with their questions in a few minutes

- 8:19am

- Teacher How do I control how far I go when I click to drive?

- Bugscope Team when you want to stop you click again
- Bugscope Team it is tricky
- Bugscope Team sometimes click to center is easier

- Bugscope Team here you can focus -- if you go the wrong way just go the other way

- 8:25am
- Teacher My class just got here... they are going to start the slow process of logging in
- Bugscope Team looking very good
- Bugscope Team Annie just dropped off a boatload of mosquitoes, fleas, antlions, etc.
- Student Hi
- Bugscope Team hi students, welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Team hello all
- Bugscope Team Hello! Welcome to Bugscope!
- Student Thanks
- Student hi
- Student hey everyone!!
- Student yo whats up
- Student o why hello there

- Bugscope Team this is the head of a mosquito
- Student wow
- Student don't worry about it charlie
- Student woah thats a dirty mosquito
- Student doubt
- Student it looks like a scarcrow
- Student NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Team MrsD is driving the microscope
- Student or I mean chuck
- Student its so ugly
- Student NICE!!!
- Student dude just stop talking
- Bugscope Team you can see the bases of the antennae
- Student no eyes?
- Bugscope Team and the eyes that wrap around the head
- Student can we look at the eyes
- Student what
- Student this is lauren
- Bugscope Team the dome like things are the eyes
- Bugscope Team F5
- Bugscope Team ask her to try refreshing: F5

- Student sorry 'bout that

- 8:30am
- Bugscope Team now we are right in the middle of the head

- Student thats gross
- Student what are the folds in the face
- Student lets play wow
- Student i know
- Bugscope Team the sort of deflated things around the periphery of the image were ommatidia -- the facets of the eyes
- Student What do the Bug experts do during the day?
- Student thats jibberish
- Student i'm in for wow
- Bugscope Team we train people to use all of the microscopes down here

- Student what is your yearly salery
Bugscope Team university staff make less than people in industry, but we have other benefits. we make anywhere from 50-100K/year

- Bugscope Team we do alright
- Student *salary
- Student how many microscopes do you have?
- Bugscope Team not so good this year thoughy

- Bugscope Team about 20 'scopes
- Student oh. thats too bad.

- Bugscope Team most of them have their own rooms
- Student fun?

- Student how much does one microscope cost?
Bugscope Team this electron scope you are using 600K, as scott said
- Student a lot
- Student what is the goo when you squish a lady bug
- Student funnny brad
- Bugscope Team the SEM was $600,000
- Student is the mosquito dead cuzz thats the way it shud be
Bugscope Team yes all the insects we have in the 'scope are dead
- Student dang!!
- Student thats more than my house!
Bugscope Team you own a house?
- Bugscope Team the TEM was a little less expensive but would cost more to replace now
- Student mine too!!
- Student me too'

- Student my parents house
- Student what is that?
- Bugscope Team this is the tip of the mosquito proboscis with a scale stuck to it
- Bugscope Team ;)
- Bugscope Team if they weren't dead, they would be pretty fast because we have the sample under vacuum
- Bugscope Team we can't see the sharp part -- the lancet
- Bugscope Team it is inside this sheath
- Student these things are weird looking...
- Bugscope Team but proboscis aren't always stingers, the elephant trunk is also a proboscis

- Student can you wink again
- Student you guys are confusing me with big words

- Bugscope Team the proboscis is sort of prehensile -- it can be manipulated like an elephant trunk
- Student i dont understand this
- Student can you show us a wheel beetle
Bugscope Team i'm sorry but we don't have a wheel beetle today
- Bugscope Team these are microsetae on the surface of the proboscis
- Student (not brad)
- Student what is that
- Student ???
- 8:35am
- Student its scary!
- Bugscope Team you mean an assassin bug with the wheel on its back?

- Student oh godd
- Student bugs are assassins!?!
- Student thats so ewwie
- Teacher What sort of beetle is this?
- Student i thought they were coated with platinum?
Bugscope Team hmm, i've never heard of coating with platinum, but scott or cate would know better than me, they are the microscopists
- Student dang what are the scizor like things near its mouth
- Bugscope Team some bugs specialize in eating other bugs
- Student does it kill people
- Bugscope Team those are the jaws

- Bugscope Team I think generally they have dry waste

- Student how can you get poisioned from a bug bite
- Student arent the bugs coated in platinum?

- Student that was my question!
- Student you copied me john
- Bugscope Team when we see horizontal lines on the sample it is charging up with electrons
- Student copy + paste !!
- Bugscope Team we can put Pt on them but usually use Au/Pd
- Teacher I am not a great driver, but noone else is saying that they want to drive right now
Bugscope Team mrsD, you did real good
- Student oh okay thanks
- Student Can we see the owl fly larva eye
- Student what is the ration of gold to platinum
- Bugscope Team any of you can control the 'scope if you wanted to
- Bugscope Team Hogen I gave you control
- Bugscope Team Hogan, sorry
- Bugscope Team hogan has control of the scope now, hogan try driving a bit
- Bugscope Team so you should be able to cruise to the owlfly larva
- Student whos hogan

- Bugscope Team we don't know if you don't
- Student never mind
- Bugscope Team Different types of insects excrete their nitrogenous wastes in different ways. Insects that spend all their time in water excrete pure nitrogen, which is the least energetically expensive way--but it only works in insects that don't have to worry about holding onto their water. Most insect excrete dry urea, like birds do.

- Bugscope Team to answer the urination question
- Student thats awesome

- Bugscope Team here we see the mouth
- Student thanks
- Student well then
- Student yeah it is
- Student thats pretty cool

- Student what are those hairy things
Bugscope Team those are called setae (sea-tea), they are sensory fibers on insects that help them sense their environment
- Bugscope Team on this plate, which I think is a clypeus, we can see tiny pores
- Bugscope Team I wanted Annie to see them

- Bugscope Team ball and socket joint
- Bugscope Team OOF
- Student what do bugs eat
Bugscope Team that depends on the insect. Some are predatory and eat other bugs, or if they are really big maybe small lizards and birds. Others drink pollen or yeast
- 8:40am
- Bugscope Team setae stick through the exoskeleton, and are attached to nerves underneath
- Student OOF?
- Student do you enjoy learning about bugs??

- Bugscope Team insects have LOTS of setae
- Student No
- Student how come some bugs sting people or bite
- Student How big is the room you work in?
Bugscope Team we are all in different rooms. the scope is in a room about 15'x15'
- Bugscope Team yes the more you learn the more interesting everything is

- Student ohh i see
- Bugscope Team the room for the 'scope is maybe 15 by 15

- Student are there anymore ladybugs left because all i ever see anymore is those orange beetles that look like ladybugs
- Teacher What is this?

- Bugscope Team this is some fungus on the owlfly larva
- Student i like ladybugs
- Bugscope Team the web-looking stuff
- Student i like you kristen
- Bugscope Team no ladybugs today, though

- Student we like u too rachel
- Student =]
- Student no i like rachel more than charlie : )

- Student do bees die when they sting you
Bugscope Team yes, when a honey bee stings you its stinger gets caught in your skin. The bee leaves a big chunk of its body behind, and dies soon after of fluid loss or weakness.
- Student no love for matt and john
- Student charlie me and rachel like you too
- Student ew that picture looks gross
- Bugscope Team hogan, you are doing a great job of driving
- Student i wanna be a cicada
- Teacher Why are there so many japanese beetles everywhere this year?
Bugscope Team Japanese beetles are not native to North America. They were introduced from Japan in the 1910s or 1920s. There are a number of theories that explain why they are so abundant in their non-native habitat. The most popular theory is that by escaping their native range, they escape the diseases and the predators that naturally control their population.
- Bugscope Team some insects that live part of their lives underground come out when they sense the rain hitting the surface

- Student do bugs migrate
Bugscope Team well, the monarch butterfly migrates, long distances too
- Bugscope Team I noticed that too mrsD

- Student how long do bugs live
- Bugscope Team the cicadas must reach the right developmental stage and then become more alert to their surroundings

- Student wow
- Student then why do they sting anyways
- Student thats disgusting
- Bugscope Team it caries, of course, how long they live -- the cicadas have at least 17 and 13 year cycles
Bugscope Team there is a very interesting theory about why cicadas have a *prime* number life cycle - if you have a life cycle of a large prime number, then you have less of a chance of meeting a predator who's life cycle isn't a prime number
- Student besides a defense
- Bugscope Team varies, I mean
- Student wait the chuck of the bees body is left in you?
- Student do they know if they sting someone they will die
Bugscope Team They don't "know" much--you have to remember that insects are pretty much chemically controlled organisms--they do what their hormones "tell" them to do.
- 8:45am
- Student chunk**

- Student back in the jurassic period, werent there millipedes that were like as big as the classroom?
- Student : p
- Bugscope Team a chunk of the bee is left in you -- a stinger with an attached pump
- Student eww
- Student sweeeeeeeeeeetttt
- Student will bugs ever get bigger
- Bugscope Team the millipedes would be bigger but not that big

- Bugscope Team You have control Jake/John

- Student lets see a dragon
Bugscope Team we would have to image your brain waves imagination to actually see a dragon

- Bugscope Team this is the owlfly larva again
- Student what the...
- Bugscope Team pretty close to a dragon, this
- Bugscope Team a bad little dude
- Bugscope Team So the populations can grow unchecked in their new habitat
- Bugscope Team related to antlions
- Student what is it again?
- Student its related to a lion?

- Student what?
- Student uckkkkk
- Bugscope Team antlion. when it is an adult it resembles a dragonfly
- Student wow
- Student dragon fly duh seriously wow

- Student ugly guy..
- Student i still wanna see a dragon

- Student reminds me of kenny
- Student hahaha rachel is such a tease

- Student no such thing as a dragon? its a dragon fly duh
- Student jkjkjk
- Student yea brad...
- Student you think of me too much
- Student kidding
- Student ok
- Student okay

- Student =]

- Student the really small red bugs that you see alot the summer; what are those?
Bugscope Team Those are mites

- Bugscope Team this is the face of the pipllbug
- Bugscope Team duh pillbug
- Bugscope Team you can fix the focus
- Bugscope Team pillbugs are related to crabs
- Student oooo
- Bugscope Team yay!
- Student killing spree
- Bugscope Team d'oh
- Bugscope Team yay again
- 8:50am
- Student yayyyy
- Student d'oh
- Student are there any images of tapeworms
- Student ooohh
- Student why cant we see anything?
- Bugscope Team mites are arachnids
- Bugscope Team some of the setae we see are mechanosensory and some are chemosensory
- Bugscope Team spidermites
- Bugscope Team hit F5?
- Student and whats the difference between a horse fly and a normal fly? and whats a real fly?
Bugscope Team A true fly has two wings, where most insects have four wings. A horse fly is a type of true fly in the family Tabanidae.

- Student preying mantis
- Bugscope Team Aztec salt
- Student yummy
- Bugscope Team if your image goes black, try hitting F5 (refresh)
- Student nice!!!!!
- Student really?
- Bugscope Team horseflies have slashing mouthparts and drink blood

- Student whats the difference between a horse fly and a deer fly
Bugscope Team They are different species...deer flies are usually smaller.

- Student thats not funny...
- Bugscope Team this is salt from wendy's, for some reason their salt is very cubic shaped

- Teacher Does this look much different that other salt?
- Student never heard of aztec salt

- Student clever

- Student mw neither
- Bugscope Team flies spit up on their food and digest it outside the body that way before sucking it back up
- Student everything in that resturant is square!

- Student it looks like a giant square

- Bugscope Team normal salt is kind of a boring cube

- Student i hate salt
- Bugscope Team like a giant square but no substructure like this shows
- Student youre a boring cube
- Bugscope Team heh it's true square salt for square burgers

- Bugscope Team OOF
- Student no one cares kristen
- Student far enough?
- Student mantis
- Student yes they do

- Student yea it does look like a sugar cube

- Student well not now

- Student whats a spiracle
Bugscope Team it's a hole on certain insects, it is how some of them breath

- Bugscope Team the mantis head is pretty big. they are pretty cool if you can see the whole thing at once, but this one is too big to do that under this scope

- Bugscope Team this is a busted-up millipede
- Student what is it?

- Student OOF
- Bugscope Team OOF
- Student arent insects and crustaceans closely related??

- Student ohh gotcha

- Student OOF

- Student how did it get busted
Bugscope Team When insects and other arthropods die, their insides rot away, leaving just their fragile exoskeleton---and since it is fragile, it is easy to bust

- Bugscope Team like lobsters are just very big bugs
Bugscope Team SCOTT!
- Student i wanna drive

- Student chuck!
- Teacher Chuck + Kristin want to drive
- Bugscope Team chuck and kristen, you have control now
- Bugscope Team C&K you have control
- 8:55am
- Bugscope Team go ahead chuck + Kristin
- Student and when you are eating a crab and break open the shell its like breaking the exoskeleton and eating the meat which is really the goo inside the bug

- Bugscope Team I got a reaction from our entomologist

- Student do people eat bugs?
Bugscope Team yes some people do

- Student i do
- Student apparently she doesnt have much of a sense of humor
- Student eww
- Student really?
- Bugscope Team annie is a phd in entomology, she's very cool
Bugscope Team Not yet...in May
- Student eww

- Student probably tribes eat bugs
Bugscope Team In many places, insects provide a valuable source of protein. In Mexico, you can order a grasshopper taco. In places in Thailand, people regularly eat giant water bugs and silkworm pupae. And big beetle grubs are popular all over the world.
- Student lets meet her
- Student what is entomology
Bugscope Team Entomology, from the Greek: entomo-/εντομο- "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and logos/λόγος, "knowledge",[1] is the scientific study of insects

- Student does it taste good?
- Bugscope Team in fact, for the giant isopod (which is a very big roly-poly) people in Taiwan eat them

- Student what is that?
- Student I want Wendy's now

- Student chocolate frosty
- Student oof
- Student it looks hairy
Bugscope Team well, not hairs, setae
- Student me too
- Student yea

- Bugscope Team chuck and kristen, you are doing a great job of keepin us on the road
- Student frosty sounds good right now

- Bugscope Team Annie is cool and knows I am just teasing her.
Bugscope Team yes Yes, I know ;)

- Student i kinda want portillos

- Teacher What are the very tiny hairs for?
Bugscope Team they are used to sense the environment. the setae are connected to nerves underneath the exoskeleton. think of them like cat whiskers, but if the cat had armor on
- Student now scots a tease
- Student what are those hairy things

- Student oh boy i hate teases
- Student does scot go out with annie
- Student the tiny hairs are probably for protection

- Bugscope Team the tiny hairs may have different purposes
- Student how do some bugs stick on walls?
Bugscope Team great questions! check out preset #2, tenent setae!!!
Bugscope Team they have tiny pads of setae called a pulvillus. These have special setae that act like suction cups or velcro that lets them walk on walls
- Bugscope Team I have eaten several different type of arthropods: shrimp and lobster (of course), but also I have had giant water bug, a scorpion, ants, crickets, meal worms and fried caterpillars.
- 9:00am

- Bugscope Team some of them increase surface area and thus may help give lift to flying insects
- Student Why do crickets make different sounds in different temperatures?
Bugscope Team Insects are cold-blooded, so their behaviors are affected by the temperature. When it is cold, they make sounds more slowly than when it is warm.
- Student whats your favorite bug to eat?
Bugscope Team Umm, I don't like insects very much. I guess the fried caterpillars--they just taste like cheetos.
- Bugscope Team some of the microsetae form patterns that help species recognize each other
- Bugscope Team Other than shrimp and lobster and crab, and stuff like that, I don't like the way that arthropods taste. I think they taste like dirt.
- Student i wish i could walk on walls
- Teacher Chuck said he doesn't want to drive anymore... I can take control if noone else wants it.
- Bugscope Team mrsD, you've got control again
- Bugscope Team two of the presets show some of those tenent setae
- Teacher krinkle wants to drive now actually
- Bugscope Team krinkle, you've got control, drive carefully
- Bugscope Team the larger setae have mechano- or chemoreceptor capabilites
- Student dont drive under the influence
- Bugscope Team capabilities
- Student krinkle logged out
- Student haha
- Student i bet they dont taste like cheetos
- Student eww i dont think i can eat cheetos anymore
- Student flaming hot or regular
- Bugscope Team rachel has control now
- Student On average, how long do bees live?
Bugscope Team gosh, it totally depends on the species, any particular one you are interested in knowing about?
- Student hahaha rachel
- Student i dont want control!
- Student come on ray ray
- Student why are hornets so aggressive
- Bugscope Team who would like to drive?
- Teacher the control got messed up... can you give it over to johnnyT?
- Bugscope Team mrsD, you've got control again
- Student Honey Bees

- Bugscope Team johnnyT has it now

- Student ah thank you i'm done
- Student johnny t is great and working for me tonight
- Student what is it?

- 9:05am
- Student treeee
- Bugscope Team this is pretty high mag
- Student enough brad
- Student tree whatt?

- Bugscope Team here we go
- Student On average how long do Honey bees live
Bugscope Team well, i'm not so sure, but i think the worker honey bees live just one season, so a few months? i'm not sure thought and couldn't find a strait answer on the internet. maybe annie knows?

- Student yea brad tree what?
- Bugscope Team this is the head of the serious bigboy praying mantis
- Student what are the is the most significant discoveries or questions this t ype of microscope has developed??
- Student big boyyyy
- Student why are hornets so aggressive
Bugscope Team Hornets and other social insects are programmed to defend their hives. If they perceive a threat to the hive, they will attack the perceived threat

- Student hey guys sorry im late

- Student rachel likes big boyssss

- Student why are hornets so aggresive?
- Bugscope Team this microscope allows people to image 3D structure at high mag with great resolution
- Student how many times has that been asked?

- Student hi

- Student a lot

- Student What do Entomologists do during the day?
Bugscope Team WHat are you doing today annie?
Bugscope Team I do lots of different things, I write scientific papers, I pin insects, I use the microscope for my research, I go to seminar. During the summer, I do field work, where I set up traps for beetles all over California

- Student I like your purple shirt rachel 2
- Student what r we looking at right now
- Teacher Did most of you major in a more general science field as undergrads, and then specialize as grad students?
Bugscope Team i got a BS in physics
Bugscope Team As an undergrad, I majored in biology with a minor in chemistry. Then I studied entomology for my masters and now for my PhD
- Bugscope Team I am not sure that it has produced notable discoveries but it contributes every day to our ability to observe and help confirm results

- Student ew
- Student oh god

- Student ewwie

- Bugscope Team I have only undergrad degrees, in English and Biology
- Bugscope Team but I have been doing this for a long time
- Student weird
- Student would you call yourself a genius?
- Teacher Where exactly is this on the beetle?
- Bugscope Team i have a bachelors and masters in music composition
- Student kristin I like your purple shirt
- Student yarghhh genius
- Student are flies and spiders and ants and other insects actually aware of their surroundings on a larger scale? do they know we exist? i mean whhat do you think bcuz u cant know for sure what they think
Bugscope Team yeah, it's hard to know what they really think. but i think some studies are done to try and know more about their "understanding". annie might know?
- Teacher And what are the suction cup looking things for?
- Bugscope Team this is the pulvillus
- Student no I'm connor
- Student Maybe I'll go into Entomology
Bugscope Team Entomology is a great field--there is a old saying, what do you call a biologist with a job? Answer: an entomologist.
- Bugscope Team the suction cups are what help the beetle climb on vertical surfaces

- 9:11am
- Student wow

- Student this was fun but its time to gooo bye everyone!
- Student yeah see ya later
- Bugscope Team thank you class, you al rocked and or rolled. big time.
- Student BYE BYE
- Student gobye
- Student bye
- Student Thanks
- Student thanks to the people down there
- Student very interesting
- Bugscope Team bye all. thank you for all your questions
- Bugscope Team you were great
- Student bye annie bye alex bye cate bye scot bye scot j
- Student thanks for showins us around and answering our questions!!!!
- Bugscope Team mrsD, the chat and images are all saved to you member page: http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/members/2008-071
- Bugscope Team Thank You!
- Bugscope Team chowzers!
- Teacher The bell is going to ring soon, so we will have a lull in students until about 9:20 or 9:25.
- Bugscope Team cool we can see if we need to fix anything

- Bugscope Team Holmes
- 9:16am
- Teacher I assume that you are used to getting comments that are not always related to insects???
Bugscope Team totally, they were fine
- Bugscope Team oh yeah no problem]
- Bugscope Team we do it too
- Bugscope Team yes it's pretty normal
- Bugscope Team if the kids are rude we ignore it an concentrate on the good kids -- but your kids were all good
- Bugscope Team a lot of time they just want to be acknowledged
- Bugscope Team sometimes we give the bad ones control and some responsibility
- Bugscope Team we do have the ability to knock off somone logged in, and close the session. but i'm not sure we've ever had to do that... yet ;)
- Teacher Good, I'm glad... we are dealing with 16 and 17 year olds here... I am never sure what is going to come out of thier mouths.
- Bugscope Team totally understand, no problem mrs D :)
- Bugscope Team we have had some serious savage kids before -- with obscene login names, even
- Bugscope Team we mostly feel sorry for the teachers
- Bugscope Team we figures sometimes there's anarchy in these classrooms and we're sitting down here in these darkened rooms, chillin'
- Bugscope Team can't tipe
- 9:22am
- Bugscope Team Hello BANDOS!
- Student what are we looking at here?
- Student hello Scot
- Bugscope Team not sure jsut where we are now
- Bugscope Team can you take the mag down a little lower?
- Bugscope Team BANDOS you can now drive
- Bugscope Team you have control

- Bugscope Team so you may choose a lower mag if you want

- Bugscope Team to see where you are

- Bugscope Team oh this is a fruit fly

- Bugscope Team I know where we are now
- Student so what are we doing?

- Student is this the leg?

- Student no

- Student what is that?
Bugscope Team this is a fruit fly
- Student heyyyyyy

- Bugscope Team Emily let us know when you would like to drive
- Student fruit fly
- Student Eww. What is that?

- Bugscope Team see the mouth?

- Student ya

- Guest these are some morose images

- Student What is this?

- Student i wanna see it's eye

- Bugscope Team fruit flies have 2 compound eyes (which take up most of the head) and 3 ocelli, which you can see on the top of its head
- Student hi how are you
- Bugscope Team morose, yeah -- well they are dead
- Student why does it have so much hair

- Student thats sweet\

- Student this is very interesting!

- Student no it isnt

- Student agreed

- Bugscope Team the hairs (setae) have sensort functions in many cases
- Student closer
- Student hi scot
- Bugscope Team sensory that is
- Bugscope Team OOF
- Student so what does your job consist of?
Bugscope Team I am an entomology graduate student and my job is pretty variable. I research pheromone communication in longhorned beetles...and I do field work-trying to trap beetles in pheromone traps. I use DNA to try to understand how longhorned beetles are related. I write scientific papers, I use the SEM to look for pores associated with pheromone production.

- Student So are each of those bumps little eyeballs?
- Student hey scot my name is also scott but with 2 T's
- Bugscope Team hi Courtney
- Student hey
- Bugscope Team enhance-- this is out of focus or OOF, try focusing

- Bugscope Team try focussing now
- Student we are trying to focus
- 9:27am
- Student Hey
- Bugscope Team there you go
- Bugscope Team awesome
- Student woah
- Student there we goi
- Student whats focusing?
- Student go*
- Student SO what is that
- Student wait is that its eye?
- Student what are those little daggers?
- Student What;s with the spikey things?
Bugscope Team those are all setae (or seta for one) and they help the fruit fly detect wind movement or direction
- Bugscope Team now you can see that the ommatidia have bristles (setae) sticking out from between them
- Student Ohhh.
- Bugscope Team those setae bend in the wind
- Student what do those do?
- Student what purpose do they have?
- Student so..
- Student Do those help them see?
- Bugscope Team so if a hand or fly swatter were coming at them, they could easily outmaneuver it
- Student oh sweet
- Student cool
- Student Who want to go chill in the BIG EASY with me
- Bugscope Team they help the fly determine wind direction, as Cate said
- Student How do they help though?

- Student BOO
- Student Ohh
- Student What is this!
- Student wwwooowwww
- Student hmm
- Student ewww
- Bugscope Team this is a mosquito
- Student thats wierrd
- Student thats creepy.
- Bugscope Team their compound eyes take up most of the head
- Student wheres the eyes?
Bugscope Team they are covering most of the head
- Bugscope Team it kind of looks like a hunchback
- Student zoom in on the thing that he bite you weith
- Bugscope Team the eyes form most of the head
- Bugscope Team that we see
- Student thats sick
- Bugscope Team Sam you got it dude

- Student This is awesome!!!
- Student what are you majoring in?
Bugscope Team I am working on my PhD in entomology

- Student what is this right now?
- Student FREmd hockey is amazingnnnngngn

- Bugscope Team I got an English and Biology degree
- Bugscope Team and scott got a degree in biology and english
- Student its hard to tell because it keeps moving

- Student what are we zooming in on?
- Bugscope Team this is the University of Illinois
- Teacher They said theat I could drive for now

- 9:32am
- Student why are you all in the basement of the school?
- Bugscope Team got it MrsD

- Student i am cunfused
- Student how much does all of your equipment cost?

- Student why no windows?

- Student so u sit in the dark..?
Bugscope Team we have fluorescent lights

- Student so what is this

- Bugscope Team a lot of the work we do is in reduced light conditions
- Student how do you get the bugs that you look at ?
Bugscope Team I collect most of them my self.
- Teacher I tried clicking on a preset, but it isn't working
- Student r u in a fraternity?
- Bugscope Team the instruments are sensitive to vibration
- Student so...

- Student Whats up with this picture
- Guest focus
- Student what made you choose that career?
Bugscope Team I always liked to be outside in nature. I always collected frogs, and lizards, and insects as a kid. When I was in high school, I realized that insects are really interesting, and that I could spend the rest of my life studying insects. As an entomologist, I get to travel to cool places, meet really interesting people, and be outside.

- Bugscope Team people send us bugs rather than, like, candy
- Student I wanna drive!!!

- Bugscope Team they just go to sleep and eventually die

- Student do you eat chocolate covered bugs?
Bugscope Team Yeah, I have had those too. I don't think they are very good. The little insect parts get stuck in your teeth.

- Student do all of those slits open?

- Student do they have a good aftertaste?
- Bugscope Team we read and ask questions when the entomologists come in
- Student thats really gross

- Student do they make your breath smell?
- Student i want to
- Student how do lice stick to your head?
Bugscope Team They have little claws that cling to your hair.
- Guest do bugs drink water?
Bugscope Team Yes...most do if they can. Some insects live in very dry places and they have to get al of their liquid from their food...or by drinking dew (not mountain dew either).
- Student this is awesome!!!
- Student I want to drive?

- Student ??
- Bugscope Team shrimp shells are chitin and so are insect exoskeletons
- Teacher What is a haltere?
- Bugscope Team this is a haltere, which is a modified wing
- Student have you ever thrown up from eating one
Bugscope Team No.

- Bugscope Team it acts as a gyroscope as the insect flies
- Bugscope Team because of course shrimp and lobsters are just very BiG Bugs!
- Student what does it do there?

- Student Hey guys... Just thought i'd pop in from my experiement and say hey... you might have seen me on tv before

- Guest why are there a lot of small wings
- 9:47am

- Student SPENCE!!!!!!!
- Student how do you determine the gender of bugs
Bugscope Team Male and female insects are usually look slightly different and if you learn the differences it is easy to tell them apart. Generally, female insects are larger than males. Males usually have longer or more ornate antennae, larger eyes, or brighter colors. It depends a lot on the species.

- Student aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
- Student about that????????????????/
- Student ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

- Student yayayayayay
- Student what is that?
- Guest do bugs breathe in oxygen?
Bugscope Team yes, they all do. They "breathe" through spiracles, which are like nostrils located on the insect's abdomen. The spiracles connect to trachae, which connect to smaller and smaller tracheoles. Each insect cell has to get its oxygen from a tracheole--they do not have blood that carries oxygen.
- Student can i have control?
- Student Hey everyone.... i'm not even in your class... but... this is so cool... i just can't log off
- 9:52am

- Student Do bugs cling to walls at an atomic level?
- Student do you have bugs as pets
Bugscope Team I used to have a hissing cockroach...but it died.
- Bugscope Team BANDOS some people think that geckos use vanderwaals forces to stick, on a more atomic level

- 9:57am

- Student its me
- Student what do you do for your job on a regular day?
- Student chris.... i'm related to tom... brady
- Student whats the grossest bug that youve ever looked at?
Bugscope Team I think maggots are pretty gross...have we ever looked at a maggot on Bugscope?
- Student why are they your favorite?
Bugscope Team Well, they are really diverse, ranging in size from 2 mm all the way up to almost 7 cm. They are often really beautiful, metallic green, metallic purple, bright red. And despite their size and abundance, we know very little about their biology
- Student on the patriots
- Student so gys
- Student Hey i thought id just want to through this out there are there any boys out there that wanna go on a date some time
- Bugscope Team there are some serious high-powered nerds that have studied gecko setae, but I am not so sure it's not wishful thinking

- Student my band, last avenue is pretty good
- Teacher Vanderwaals... excellent...we will be studying those in December!!!
- Student wanna by some CD's

- Student can you get stung by a fairy fly?
Bugscope Team Nope--they are way too small. Fairyflies lay their eggs in the eggs of aquatic insects.

- Student we got like 4 songs right now

- Student we cover blink182 siometimes too

- Bugscope Team the setae on a gecko foot are much finer than what we are imaging, and we have corresponded with some of those guys

- Student Last Avenue FTW

- Bugscope Team i wouldn't want to be the one to put them on the stub, i don't like to get near them-- bad experience

- Student a gecko?
- Student Hey guys... i know i'm out for the season... but i thought i might take a break from physical therapy to let you know that Chris here is my cousin... Chris Brady... You know him... the weird kid in the front of the class... well anyway i got to get back to training... see ya

- Guest vins fo sho
- Student only $3
- Student have you ever caught a disease from a bug you tried to kill or disect?
Bugscope Team Nope. Haven't done that either. Again, I think it would be pretty difficult to contract a disease from an insect that you were dissecting...I guess you can't rule out the possibility though.
- Student how much blood do mosquitos actually drink?
- Bugscope Team we have looked at a variety of bees before

- Student like when they bite you

- Student what is the most intersesting bug you've ever looked at?
- Guest don't mosquitoes take blood for their larvae
