- Bugscope Team yep, suzanne kurey
- Bugscope Team is the teacher today, from village elementary, in Monmouth NJ
- Bugscope Team Hi Suzanne!
- Bugscope Team hello suzanne, welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope!
- Teacher hi guys! I think I got it!
- Bugscope Team this is the poison pore on the tip of a scorpion stinger
- Bugscope Team hi suzanne, quick question for you: can you see all the chat, and the controls (magnify, navigation, etc) and the presets?
- Teacher Wow! keep it up there. My students aren't in yet.
- Bugscope Team (you won't be able to see all of the chat and all of the presets without scrolling)
- Teacher I can see the chat.
- Bugscope Team this is a preset, so you should always be able to click on its thumbnail, to the right here, to call it up
- Bugscope Team okay, good, do you see the controls on the right side (top), magnify, navigation, focus, adjust?
- Bugscope Team Alex is going to ask you to reset your screen resolution, if possible
- Bugscope Team so you can see the whole set of controls and the presets
- 7:47am
- Teacher yes, I see it. I did reset my screen resolution.
- Bugscope Team yes, i just noticed your screen resolution for the compatibility test was 800x600, and that should be changed to 1024x768, so you can see everthing. ah okay, good. thanks!
- Teacher I wish I could rush the buses so the kids could get here sooner!
- Bugscope Team also, you can run your browser in full screen mode by pressing the F11 function key
- Bugscope Team suzanne, you are welcome to practice driving the scope now if you want to...

- 7:52am

- Teacher I'm having difficult "driving" the navigator. also, why does this site kick me out to main website page?
Bugscope Team try driving again, we just unlocked the session, should have done it earlier
- Bugscope Team it shouldn't kick you out, for sure
- Bugscope Team yeah, we've not heard of that problem before, is it still doing it?
- Bugscope Team is there a phone number i can call you at?
- Bugscope Team I just saw some movement
- Bugscope Team 732-946-1820?
- Bugscope Team there we go

- Bugscope Team click again to stop moving
- Bugscope Team there ya go
- Teacher i lost the stinger! Ugh!
- Bugscope Team click on a preset to get back to it
- Bugscope Team looks like you are figuring it out -- now that we have unlocked the controls
- Bugscope Team preset #2
- Bugscope Team yeah you should be able to scroll to preset 2 and click on it to retrieve the stinger

- Bugscope Team cool, this is preset #7, butterfly scales
- Teacher this is cool
- Bugscope Team there is always a short delay after clicking on a preset, the scope has to move to that location, and then the live image is sent out to you in the browser window.
- 7:58am
- Teacher ok. Kids are coming in now.
- Bugscope Team if you have any questions anytime, please just ask, we are here to help
- Bugscope Team cool!
- Bugscope Team hello students from village elementary, welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Team this is a butterfly scale, magnified 2000x
- Teacher what kind of a butterflu, we would like to know
Bugscope Team I'm not sure, I think it was yellow. That is about as much as I know about it
- Bugscope Team notice that the scales have lots of small holes in them, that's to reduce weight yet still keep the scales strong for flying

- 8:03am
- Bugscope Team ah, now this is cool, this is a beetle claw, with some spider web in it
- Bugscope Team If it was yellow, it was probably in the family Pieridae. The common name of this family is the sulphurs or whites. That family included the Cabbage White and the Dog-faced butterfly
- Teacher Did the beetle die/get caught and die in the spider web

- Bugscope Team correction: that should have been the dog-face butterfly, not the dog-faced butterfly

- Teacher Does the beetle see more than one thing since it has many facets to its eye
Bugscope Team Each facet gathers a little bit of information about what the beetle is seeing. Then (as far as we know) the beetle's brain puts together one big picture. We think that the picture they see looks like a news paper image...pixelated and patterns of dark and light
- Teacher Aidan wants to know if the beetle has a nose?
Bugscope Team Beetles don't really have noses...they smell using special hairs (setae) on their antennae and mouths
- Bugscope Team you can take the mag down to see more of the beetle face if you like
- Bugscope Team the beetle does not have a nose like we do, but it can smell

- 8:08am

- Bugscope Team and it has a more panoramic view of the world than we do because of the shape of its compound eyes

- Bugscope Team each of the tiny facets -- the ommatidia -- gets an image. And the images are processed and combined in the brain -- as Annie says
- Bugscope Team but, as you can imagine, it is pretty hard to know what insects see
- Bugscope Team not all insects are "bugs". This is a true bug
- Teacher What kind of bug is the "true bug head"
Bugscope Team I think this is a shield bug

- Bugscope Team they can see color, and some of them can see ultraviolet wavelengths of light, which we cannot

- Teacher where does the Shield bug live?
Bugscope Team Shield bugs live in leafy vegetation: bushes, clumps of grass, trees.
- Bugscope Team shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid
- Bugscope Team this liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled carelessly
- Bugscope Team (from wikipedia)
- 8:13am
- Bugscope Team shield bugs can be plant pests

- Bugscope Team Shield bugs are sometimes called stink bugs...they are in the same insect family

- Bugscope Team These are special hairs called tenet setae that allow the insect to "stick" to walls and ceilings

- Bugscope Team *tenent* setae
- Teacher in French "tenir" means to hold, also. The kids think this is gross-the tenent setae
Bugscope Team you and alex are both right. French and Spanish are derived from latin, which is where tenent is from. Tenere in latin means to hold

- Bugscope Team scorpions, when they sting, inject a prevenom and then the venom itself
- Bugscope Team the prevenom ensures that the sting continues to hurt
- Teacher How poisonous is this scorpion?
Bugscope Team Most scorpion stings are quite painful, but not deadly.
- 8:19am
- Teacher You rock, Cate.
Bugscope Team why thank you :)

- Bugscope Team cate made all the presets today too, she's multi-talented

- Teacher Cate is great, Cate is grat. Everyone chant: Cate is great! Yeehaw! See what happens when you work with Kindergarten people.
- Bugscope Team fan club
- Bugscope Team heh not that great. I still make mistakes
- Teacher Is this scorpion dead or alive. Maybe it's on a poster in the post office
Bugscope Team This scorpion is dead
- Bugscope Team we should take it in and get the reward
- Bugscope Team maybe...
- Bugscope Team it can't hurt anyone now
- Bugscope Team there are some scorpions that ARE dangerous to humans, so don't go playing with scorpions!
- Bugscope Team scorpions fluoresce in UV light
- Bugscope Team but like annie said, most scorpions aren't deadly
- Bugscope Team there is a scorpion that is nicknamed: deathstalker, leiurus quinquestriatus
- Bugscope Team they like to crawl into shoes to hide
- Bugscope Team no, scorpion stings are not fun...like I said they are really painful. I had a friend who is a grown up man who was stung and he was out for a big part of the day
- Bugscope Team I had a scorpion in one of my insect traps this past summer
- Teacher We really enjoyed this presentation. My students are eady to move on. The itch factor is getting big. Terrific job. We learned a lot. thanks.
- Bugscope Team I think if I lived in the south where they are I would shake out my shoes in the morning
- 8:24am
- Teacher Annie-Where do you live that a scorpion was in a trap. Scott, that sounds gross
- Bugscope Team Thank You!
- Bugscope Team thank you village elementary, you rocked and or rolled!
- Bugscope Team I do field work in California
- Bugscope Team I live in Illinois though
- Bugscope Team hi dp!
- Teacher We rock and roll. we also dance on stage and act silly daily. Be careful in California, Annie
- Bugscope Team Oh, I will!
- Bugscope Team and remember to shake out your shoes because you never know what might be lurking in it!
- Teacher Thanks Bugscopers! Can I tell my colleague about this? Or woudl you prefer to keep it somewhat quiet?
Bugscope Team please tell your colleagues about it, http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/apply
- Bugscope Team think of them as traps you have to check daily
- Bugscope Team and tenet is actually spelled tenent... ;)
- Bugscope Team we stuff our socks in our boots when we work in Costa Rica!
- Teacher Ewww
- Bugscope Team you can tell whomever you like, the more the better!
- Bugscope Team certainly you can tell your friends
- Bugscope Team Tell all your colleagues!!
- Teacher Thanks. Take care. signing off now.
- Bugscope Team dp let us know if you have questions or if you would like to drive this morning
- Bugscope Team suzanne, all this chat, and images, are saved on your bugscope member page:
