Teacher We are showing how we use 2 different types of Smartboards...so I am going to do my little clip..probably 10 minutes worth, then the other presenter will do her session

Bugscope Team Today we are working with all teachers, from Mahomet-Seymour High School.
Bugscope Team I hope they have questions for us. They will be demonstrating Smartboards.
Bugscope Team entstudent can you tell what this is? It has a yellow and black banded abdomen.
Bugscope Team and the upper palps, which I had thought were mandibular since they are below the jaw, have those sensory pits in them.

Bugscope Team now I wonder if they are termed maxillary because they are the topmost palps

Bugscope Team if you click to drive you need to remember to click to stop
Bugscope Team and if you click to center it may work better if you have a slow connection

Bugscope Team we have all the insects set up with a preset, so you can zoom right over to it, and then to get around on the insect, you can use click to center. I think that would be the best way

Bugscope Team There is a moth or butterfly scale, on the face of this beetle. It's covered with debris.
Teacher what are we looking at?
Bugscope Team Insects/arthropods are often dirtier and 'hairier' than we expect
Bugscope Team this one in particular has a lot of 'debris' on it
Bugscope Team so this is the face of the beetle, and the thing that looks like a palm frond is a scale from another insect
Bugscope Team I think that is because it is a little bit old

Bugscope Team the idea is that they give the fruit fly info about windspeed/direction
Bugscope Team the individual facets of the compound eye are called ommatidia

Bugscope Team Oh the spinnerets are the web mixing ports for the spider
Bugscope Team the web comes out as a liquid that solidifies right away
Bugscope Team the spider can make sticky and nonsticky web
Bugscope Team it eats the web and recycles it that way
Bugscope Team so if it got stuck in its own web it could eat its way out
Student How much does a spider eat in a day?
Bugscope Team I have not noticed Spiderman having that particular function.

Bugscope Team Spiders sometimes go for a long time without eating, of course. And what they eat is liquid -- they suck the juice out of insects/arthropods

Bugscope Team It is possible he will have to prep his sample -- sometimes he gets on right away and sometimes he coats his sample first. But we (you) have the 'scope 'til 10:30 for sure.

Student what are the hair like structures on the eye?
Bugscope Team those are setae (seta for singular) and they are insect hairs
Bugscope Team if you have any questions, just ask away, and we will try to answer them the best we can
Bugscope Team they allow the fly to detect changes in the wind movement

Student Do they bother its eyesight at all?

Bugscope Team not that I am aware of, it has really big eyes that cover most of the head giving the fly an almost 360 degree view
