- Bugscope Team hi judy
- 1:33pm
- Guest hi scott, are you there?
- 2:03pm
- Guest hi scott
- Guest are you there, this is alex from the vmil
- Guest hi guys!
- Guest what bug are we looking at??
- Guest hello??
- Guest is any1 there?
- Bugscope Team these are spider mites
- 2:08pm
- Guest o hok
- Bugscope Team these are on a leaf
- Bugscope Team sorry we arent always looking at the screen right now
- Bugscope Team alex you there
- Bugscope Team ?
- Guest ok
- Guest do you have a slide of a dust mite?
Bugscope Team we dont have any dust mites today, the only mites are the red spider mites. dust mites are also harder to find because they are soft bodies so they dont dry very well for the microscope
- Guest ok
- Bugscope Team we have a mosquito, owlfly larvae, spider, wasp, butterfly wing, salt
- Bugscope Team and a housefly
- Bugscope Team and a couple ants
- Guest could we see a wasp?
- Bugscope Team so here we can see the wasp head
- Bugscope Team you can see the one of the compound eyes wraps around the head
- Guest wow
- Bugscope Team and it has a lot of hairs
- 2:13pm
- Guest do those hairs have a name?
Bugscope Team hairs on an insect are called setae (or seta for singular)
- Bugscope Team it also has some big jaws
- Bugscope Team we technically arent supposed to call them hairs since hairs are for mammals
- Bugscope Team now we can see inside the 'scope chamber where the sample is kept in a vacuum

- Bugscope Team we have the insects mounted on a 1 3/4 inch aluminum stub
- Bugscope Team the setae (pronounced see-tee) allow the insect to feel whats going on around them through their tough exoskeleton
- Guest oh
- Guest do humans have hair on their head and arms and legs for the same reason?
- Bugscope Team we are using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to image these insects today, which uses electrons and not light. this is why the images look black and white
- Bugscope Team some of the hairs serve the same reason. We have hairs to keep us warm for the most part, but they are connected to nerves just like the insects. The insect setae serve multiple purposes like tasting/smelling, feeling, sensing hot/cold
- Guest ok
- Guest mm this is kind of random
- Bugscope Team they have more specialized hairs because they have something similar to a suit of armor, we dont have to have hairs like that because we have soft skin that allows us to feel more
- 2:19pm
- Bugscope Team here we are zoomed in on the compound eye of the wasp
- Bugscope Team there are even some setae that aer between the individual facets of the compound eye
- Bugscope Team these help the wasp to sense wind movement
- Bugscope Team they are a lot shorter and stiffer than other setae on the wasp head to sense the wind better
- Guest mmhm
- Bugscope Team we are going to the mosquito now
- Bugscope Team this is a female mosquito
- Guest ok
- Bugscope Team the donut shaped things in the middle of the head are the bases of where the antennae used to be, but they fell off
- Bugscope Team the eyes are actually the big compound eyes tht cover almost the entire head
- Bugscope Team the thing coming up in the middle holds all the mouthparts usually, it is like a sheath
- 2:24pm
- Guest woa
- Bugscope Team but today we prepared this mosquito in a way so that the mouthparts are sticking out of the sheath
- Bugscope Team so all the swirly stuff around the sheath are the mouthparts that are usually hidden
- Guest i have a random question...r u at Bekman institute?
Bugscope Team yes we are located at beckman institute
- Bugscope Team so this is a stylet, which is the part that cuts into your skin when it bites you
- Bugscope Team it acts like a steak knife
- Bugscope Team and now you can see a second stylet
- Guest whats that?
Bugscope Team this is another stylet uses to cut into your skin so that the siphon which we are about to go to , can get to the blood
- Bugscope Team the siphon is here now
- Bugscope Team this is like a hypodermic needle that sucks up the blood, and it can also put its saliva in so that it can thin your blood
- Guest ow!
- Bugscope Team it is very sharp, not as sharp as the stylets, but still very sharp
- Bugscope Team now we moved to a leafcutter ant
- Bugscope Team we have 2 today, this is a smaller one
- Bugscope Team we will probably move to the bigger one in a minute
- Bugscope Team you can see it has a small compound eye compared to the wasp and the mosquito
- 2:29pm
- Bugscope Team thats because it doesnt rely on its eyes so much as it relies on its antennae
- 2:39pm
- Guest well i g2g
- Guest thank you!
- Guest bi bi
- Bugscope Team thanks for stopping by
- Guest hi, scott are you listening
- Guest we are up in the vmil
- Bugscope Team yep here
- Guest can we control the scope?
- Bugscope Team maybe in a minute, we are showing the scope to someone right now
- Guest cool dude
- Guest don't be a hog next time ;)
- Bugscope Team haha
- Bugscope Team well when scott gets talking, he doesnt like to stop :p
- 2:45pm
- Bugscope Team control now whyile you can
- Bugscope Team wait a sec again
- Bugscope Team sorry alex
- 3:05pm
- Bugscope Team hi scott, you there?
- Bugscope Team hey alex
- Guest hello
- Guest what is that?
- Bugscope Team we are on a leafcutter ant
- Bugscope Team this is looking at the leg socket
- Guest thank you!
- Bugscope Team thanks for stopping by
