- Teacher we are here!!!
- Bugscope Team hello, welcome to bugscope!

- Bugscope Team clark, you are free to start controlling the scope.

- Bugscope Team that is just a piece of debris of some sort on the eye
- Bugscope Team maybe a piece of leaf

- Bugscope Team Clark: I would recommend using the Full-Screen option in Internet Explorer which you can toggle with the F11 key
- Teacher dude that is awesome, from dustin
- Teacher the class will start in just a minute!
- Bugscope Team hey dustin!

- 11:56am

- Teacher is this an ant??
- Bugscope Team this is a wasp
- Bugscope Team but it does look like an ant
- Bugscope Team I think ants' eyes are farther back and are usually smaller
- Bugscope Team hi annie! session has started, clark is driving and looking at a wasp head.

- Bugscope Team excellent.!

- Bugscope Team arr, maitie...
- Bugscope Team great job talking like a pirate Alex haha
- 12:01pm
- Teacher When di dbugscope start? when did the university get the microscope?
Bugscope Team The microscope got delivered around Christmas of 1997 and I joined the Bugscope project as it was starting in the spring of 1998

- Teacher how big is the microscope unit?
Bugscope Team The microscope itself is about the size of two mini-fridges stacked on top of each other. The rest of the small room however is filled with supporting equipment
- Bugscope Team Bugscope started in the spring of 1999, in March.
- Bugscope Team here is a picture of the scope: http://www.itg.uiuc.edu/ms/equipment/microscopes/esem/
- Bugscope Team The microscope is about the size of a large desk.

- Bugscope Team The column is about 6 feet tall -- the column is over the body of the 'scope.

- Bugscope Team We got the microscope at the end of 1998, beginning of 1999.

- Bugscope Team Chas was here with us at the beginning, as a sophomore in high school.
- Bugscope Team now he's a grad student
- Teacher what is this?
Bugscope Team These look like pollen grains tangled up in the setae of the bug
- Bugscope Team these are pollen grains

- Bugscope Team on the body of the wasp

- 12:06pm

- Bugscope Team if you take the mag down, when you feel like it, you will be able to see where you are on a more macro level
- Bugscope Team Ah, very cool. I love it when the setae have cool textures like that
- Bugscope Team those are kind of cool looking setae too, the way they twist around

- Bugscope Team sort of like spider setae
- Teacher how do they coat the bug for magnification?
- Bugscope Team now we are pushing the mag, and the electron beam can move the sample around
- Bugscope Team we use a sputter coater
- Bugscope Team i am back!
- Bugscope Team we coat them with gold-palladium
- Teacher annie we have missed you
- Bugscope Team we have a gold-palladium target; we pull a vacuum on it, we create an atmosphere of 50 mTorr Argon.

- Bugscope Team I am here for your questions, ask away!!!
- Bugscope Team this is just a small part of the claw, you can zoon out to see the whole thing

- Bugscope Team the plasma forces atoms of gold-palladium off of the target and they rain down on the sample, coating it with a few nm of Au/Pd
- Teacher can you get the picture of the hornet stinger?

- 12:11pm

- Bugscope Team you should be able to drive to the hornet stinger

- Bugscope Team Cate may be able to help direct you
- Bugscope Team there's another pollen grain

- Bugscope Team nice one

- Bugscope Team that is awesome
- Bugscope Team ragweed
- Teacher we cant drive our server is too slow
- Teacher can you do it for us?
- Bugscope Team okay we should be able to find it for you

- Teacher is that the stinger?
- Bugscope Team the tip is barely visible
- 12:17pm

- Bugscope Team I will go to the actual hornet, as you asked

- Bugscope Team well sometimes we don't get to see the stinger
- Bugscope Team this is where it would be
- Bugscope Team a stinger is a modified ovipositor

- Teacher are you still driving?

- Bugscope Team yes I am driving to the caddisfly
- Teacher where are we going?
- Bugscope Team on the abdomen now
- Bugscope Team where would you like to go?

- Teacher mouth then we will control
- Bugscope Team great!

- Bugscope Team can you see where we are now?

- Bugscope Team the mouth is like that of an ant -- very busy looking

- 12:22pm

- Bugscope Team Is this an ant?

- Bugscope Team looks as if it had swallowed, partially, another small insect
- Bugscope Team looks weird
- Bugscope Team this is the caddisfly Annie-chan.
- Bugscope Team ok....I thought I was going crazy

- Bugscope Team well maybe it has something to do with Pirates
- Bugscope Team OOF
- Bugscope Team MAYbe.....
- Bugscope Team caddisflies comprise a small order of aquatic insects
- Bugscope Team The adults look like non descript brown moths with long antennae

- Teacher what is this?
- Bugscope Team They are closely related to moths and butterfies
- Bugscope Team it is a setae on a wing
- Bugscope Team fuzzy wing
- Bugscope Team seta i guess
- Teacher what is this?
- Teacher o sorry.
- Teacher i love you

- Teacher sorry, this student has removed from the computer--clark
- 12:27pm
- Bugscope Team no problemo

- Teacher how much does the microscope cost??
- Bugscope Team back in a sec
- Teacher ok
- Bugscope Team the scope cost $750,000
- Teacher jeez
- Bugscope Team it's hard to tell -- it's like buying an expensive car with lots of options
- Teacher what is this??

- Bugscope Team if you decrease the magnification you will see it's a coiled up proboscis
- Bugscope Team ok hill you have control
- Bugscope Team Meredith is on!
- Teacher Hi we are back!
- 12:32pm
- Bugscope Team The mag is super high -- that's why there is not much to see.
- Bugscope Team if you take the mag down you can see where you are right now
- Teacher Our class is over, now. So we will let you go for awhile. Thank you so much.
- Bugscope Team Is that it for the day or just for now?
- Teacher Can we reconnect at 1:45?
- Teacher I have a break, my last class comes in at 1:30...
- Bugscope Team sure we have the 'scope 'til 2, and 3 if you want
- Teacher I also wanted to make sure you have canceled the Fri session for Mahomet-Seymour
- Bugscope Team yes we signed you out till 3 for the microscope
- Bugscope Team oh Okay
- Bugscope Team wait, the friday session is cancelled?
- Bugscope Team yeah because we got extra time on Monday
- Bugscope Team ahh, got ya.
- Bugscope Team Meredith, I am checking out the scope
- Bugscope Team Monday we were able to get that other class in.
- Teacher Great see you at about 1:45. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Team see you soon...
- Bugscope Team that's okay..... would it be okay for me to drive the scope for a bit
- Bugscope Team this is the tongue of the butterfly
- Bugscope Team you bet
- Bugscope Team go for it andres!
- Bugscope Team Thanks

- 12:37pm

- 12:42pm

- 12:48pm
- Teacher Hi Andres...its Lori
- Teacher I will tell her you stopped by
- Teacher I have study hall right now!!
- Bugscope Team These are the ocelli.
- Bugscope Team The sort of primitive eyes on top of the head bewteen the much larger compound eyes.

- Bugscope Team Andres the compound eye will have more detail in it.
- Bugscope Team These often are smooth like this.
- 12:53pm
- Bugscope Team It might be cool to move to a view of one of the big eyes and look at the individual eye facets -- the ommatidia.

- Bugscope Team Hi Lori

- Bugscope Team Andres you can see the edges of the compound eyes upper left and lower right.

- Bugscope Team You can see that they have tiny hexagonal facets.
- Bugscope Team This is the thorax.'

- Bugscope Team and now you can see the claws, some of them.

- Bugscope Team nice

- Bugscope Team I wish I knew more about insect anatomy

- Bugscope Team well this is the claw, at the end of the tarsi, which are the 'forearm' segments
- Bugscope Team which insect is it?
- Bugscope Team some claws, in insects that can climb walls and walk on glass, have a pad or two below them called the pulvillus.
- 12:58pm
- Bugscope Team this is a wasp

- Bugscope Team the pulvillus has a tiny carpet of setae on it called tenent setae
- Bugscope Team sometimes they look like calla lilies
- Bugscope Team or suction cup darts

- Bugscope Team those stick to the surface and allow the insect to walk, like on the ceiling, for example.

- Bugscope Team abdomen

- Bugscope Team we looked for a stinger earlier and found just the very tip

- Bugscope Team this is the butterfly right?

- Bugscope Team because it has tiny scales all over it

- Bugscope Team 's a little awry in death

- Bugscope Team Hi Mandy!

- Guest Hello!
- 1:03pm
- Bugscope Team hello!

- Bugscope Team Andres is driving the 'scope just now.

- Bugscope Team We'll have to get him to give you a tour.

- Bugscope Team You can see someone's claw here.
- Bugscope Team awesome is one of the words we like to hear :)

- Bugscope Team not sure where we are -- Cate?
- Bugscope Team Dragon fly
- Bugscope Team dragonfly
- Bugscope Team Mandy we are all sitting in dfferent rooms down here. Alex is in the 'scope room.

- Bugscope Team Its eyes are deflated a bit.

- Bugscope Team Andres see if you can zoom in on that.
- Bugscope Team it's a bit crushed

- Bugscope Team some of them came in a little flat
- Bugscope Team with a dragonfly sometimes you don't see as much detail in the compound eye
- Bugscope Team does mandy want to drive the scope?

- Bugscope Team four wings

- 1:08pm
- Bugscope Team Black ant

- Bugscope Team 'newer' insects often have two wings; the other wings are replaced by halteres, which function like gyroscopes to compensate for the movement of the wings.
- Guest if I had time, I gotta get going in a minute

- Bugscope Team Mandy you are welcome to drop in whenever we are on.

- Bugscope Team Claw!
- Bugscope Team later MK, keep it real.

- Guest thanks Scott!
- Bugscope Team Thank you!

- Guest see ya!
- Bugscope Team She always keeps it real.
- Bugscope Team how to focus on the claw and not the background
- Bugscope Team See you!
- Bugscope Team Andres you can do it.
- Bugscope Team try it
- Bugscope Team pull the focus to a shorter working distance
- Bugscope Team if it gets worse, -- well you have it now dude

- Bugscope Team nice...
- Bugscope Team that is a nice shot

- Bugscope Team great job

- 1:13pm
- Bugscope Team this ant could probably not walk on the ceiling

- Bugscope Team it would not be able to stick well

- Bugscope Team cool

- Bugscope Team this is a mechanosensory seta -- a hair. on the wing of this caddisfly.

- Bugscope Team oop I keep getting stuck on the phone

- 1:18pm

- Bugscope Team according to wiki, a caddisfly life is very shortlived, only 1-2 weeks

- Bugscope Team Well. this was great fun. But I do have to go now
- Bugscope Team Thanks everyone!!
- Bugscope Team ok andres, it was great having you here.
- Bugscope Team ok thanks for trying out the scope
- 1:24pm
- Bugscope Team back in a sec
- Bugscope Team back
- 1:37pm
- Bugscope Team I am back
- Bugscope Team yo einna
- Bugscope Team we are waiting for 1:45 to come around
- Bugscope Team yo xela
- Bugscope Team heh
- Bugscope Team that name still makes me laugh
- Bugscope Team i like robert = trebor. hey trebor, what's the word trebor.
- Bugscope Team trebor lazarevich. that's my son's name if i ever have one.
- 1:42pm
- Bugscope Team Ttocs.
- Bugscope Team Yaj.
- Bugscope Team Nosnibor.
- Bugscope Team nosnibor!!!!
- Bugscope Team Annie's last name is what pirates say.
- Bugscope Team hey---it is talk like a pirate day!!!
- Bugscope Team arrr, maitie, gimme yer loot!
- Teacher we are here
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Team you can start controlling the scope anytime, there ya go!
- Teacher Thank You
- Teacher What Are we looking at
- Bugscope Team Is this the caddisfly larva?
- Bugscope Team hmm, not sure, annie might know. try zooming out and that might tell us.

- 1:48pm

- Bugscope Team well, these are setae. some of the setae are broken off.
- Teacher Any clues on what we are looking at yet
- Bugscope Team the caddisfly had wings, do the larva have wings?
- Bugscope Team you could try to decrease the magnification
- Bugscope Team Larvae do not have wings
- Bugscope Team we think this is a caddishfly, and we are looking at it's setae on it's leg.
- Teacher new
- Bugscope Team try a preset, good idea.
- Bugscope Team If you reduce the magnification, we can give you a better ID

- Bugscope Team the preset has moved a bit, try navitaing up slightly

- Bugscope Team ah, this is a dragonfly

- Bugscope Team Or a damselfly...I can't quite tell
- Teacher Where would the wing be
- 1:53pm
- Bugscope Team i believe it is on the other side (on the left)
- Bugscope Team lower left i believe, allthough they might have come off on this bug? cate, any idea?
- Bugscope Team if you move southwest, you will find the wings
- Teacher we are going to try another preset

- Bugscope Team cool, this is a high magnification of a wasp. the fluffy balls are pollen.

- Teacher Where si the pollen found
- Bugscope Team and the hair like things are called "setae".
- Teacher Is this on the wasp wing
- Bugscope Team try reducing the magnification and we'll see the bug better, i think this is on the body of the wasp.

- Bugscope Team wow, cool, huh? looks like it was the body.
- Bugscope Team wing is to the lower left i think.

- 1:58pm

- Bugscope Team great job navigating, hill!

- Teacher Why are the images in black and white
Bugscope Team we aren't using light to look at the insects, we are using electrons which are much smaller
Bugscope Team yes, color is sensed by the frequency of light, whereas the electrons used to gather these images are much smaller than the frequency of light.
- Teacher cool beans

- Bugscope Team the microscope is an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM)
- Teacher are these the seta

- Bugscope Team yes the "hairs" are
- Bugscope Team yep, the hair looking this are setae, setae are used to sense the environment around the bug, because bugs don't have nerves in their skin.
- Bugscope Team they don't have skin in fact, they have an ecto-skeleton.
- 2:03pm
- Bugscope Team right annie? annie is the expert!
- Bugscope Team ok clark, got ya back, gave you control, should be okay now.
- Bugscope Team exoskeleton
- Bugscope Team the hairs are connected to nerves and stick through the exoskeleton

- Teacher can we see the ant head?

- Bugscope Team its not a preset, but we can drive you over there

- 2:08pm

- Bugscope Team there it is
- Bugscope Team ants have very simple eyes if any at all

- Bugscope Team that's because they don't rely on them because they live underground for most of the time
- Teacher what is in the mouth

- Bugscope Team ants have very busy looking mouths that usually looks like they are in the act of eating other insects

- 2:14pm

- Bugscope Team ocelli

- Bugscope Team ocelli are often found on flying insects
- Bugscope Team wasp head!
- Bugscope Team yep
- Teacher what do we have here
- Bugscope Team this looks like the head of a wasp
- Teacher what are the three bumps on its head
Bugscope Team those bumps are "simple" eyes, also called ocelli. The function is not completely understood, but know that ocelli help the insect to nagivate in relation to the horizon and they also allow the insect to sense photoperiod

- 2:19pm

- Bugscope Team there is a little baby wing
- Bugscope Team something like that....
- Bugscope Team i haven't ever seen something like this before
- Bugscope Team It is pretty cool

- 2:24pm

- Bugscope Team we can see the damselfly here

- Teacher why is this a damselfly not a dragonfly
- Teacher /where is its eye?

- 2:30pm
- Bugscope Team i'm not sure about the ey, annie, but if you mag out we might be able to see the eye.
- Bugscope Team What? It's a damselfyl?

- Bugscope Team i'm not sure about the damself vs. dragonfly i meant to say.
- Bugscope Team I can't quite see the head to tell for sure. A damselfly has a long head, where as dragonflies have rounder heads. Usually a damselfly is smaller than a dragonfly.
- Bugscope Team The eyes were a little collapsed.

- Bugscope Team ah, north to the head!
- Bugscope Team now up and you can see the head
- Bugscope Team d'oh

- Bugscope Team Damselflies are usually smaller and more delicate that dragonflies, they hold their wings together over their backs, where dragonflies never fold their wings.
- Bugscope Team This is a damselfly
- Bugscope Team got it
- Bugscope Team that's why we have you
- Teacher lastly..what is your fav insect?
- Bugscope Team scott!!!!
- Bugscope Team no, just kidding. i like mites.
- Teacher creepy!
- Bugscope Team mine are longhorned beetles!
- Bugscope Team i don't know what mine is
- Bugscope Team not creepy at all
- Bugscope Team strepsiptera are really cool though...but not my favorite
- Teacher thank you for your time...we will do this again next year!
- Bugscope Team great, we can't wait!
- Bugscope Team ok, good bye, great job, hope you had a good time!
- Bugscope Team thank you for logging in!
- Bugscope Team Thank You!
- 2:35pm
- Bugscope Team s
- Bugscope Team Okay I am out the door. Thanks you guys.
- Bugscope Team ;)
- Bugscope Team bye bye!!!
- Bugscope Team okay, i'm closing the session now. bye you all!
