- Bugscope Team yup
- Bugscope Team hey lisa
- Bugscope Team Hey Lisa!
- Bugscope Team El Camino Reale the royal road.
- Teacher Hello! I think we are good on this end... this may be a first! :)
- Bugscope Team yay!
- Bugscope Team Wonderful
- Bugscope Team Cate made us a super nice sample today.
- Bugscope Team no scott, you were just hoarding all the good ones in your office
- Bugscope Team She did some critical point drying, even. Like a master chef.

- Teacher The dialog box is a little different this time. It scrolls up rather than down.
- Bugscope Team pepper bettle is cool Owen says
- Bugscope Team Chas can change that on a dime.
- Bugscope Team That's it DaddyO.
- Bugscope Team which dialog box are you referring to?
- Bugscope Team he took a picture with his camera
- Bugscope Team Lisa Wheezer is Jon, who works here, at home.
- Teacher The instant message section
- Bugscope Team He gave us the tiny pepper eating beetles.
- Bugscope Team Yeah I guess so...
- Bugscope Team have fun guys gtg
- Bugscope Team Lisa you can drive now if you'd like...
- Bugscope Team Thanks Jon!
- Bugscope Team bye jon!
- Bugscope Team Jon is Gon
- Bugscope Team Lisa do you have a big crew today?
- 6:08pm
- Bugscope Team Cate are you home? Is Will off this evening?
- Bugscope Team Questiones.
- Bugscope Team he is at class
- Bugscope Team and yes I am at home
- Bugscope Team oh man poor guy
- Teacher I am going to get class started momentarily. I will be right back!
- Bugscope Team what is the deal with camino?
- Bugscope Team Cool.
- Teacher We have about 27 tonight... so big!
- Bugscope Team great!
- Bugscope Team great. will they each get to login individually?
- Bugscope Team On how many computers?
- Bugscope Team just my macs, so 2
- Bugscope Team oh not me oops
- Bugscope Team Cate you're running two computers tonight? Are you playing on the other one?
- Bugscope Team no lol, I'm just using my laptop
- Bugscope Team aww cute
- 6:13pm
- Bugscope Team so I've heard
- Bugscope Team these little pepper beetles are super tiny but they can really chew with those serious jaws.
- Bugscope Team which bug are we looking at now? the ant?
- Bugscope Team this is the beetle's found with the pepper
- Bugscope Team this is the pepper beetle dude, one of 'em
- Bugscope Team wow looks kind of like an ant from what i see
- Bugscope Team you are trippin' girl
- Bugscope Team must be
- Bugscope Team it is pf bizarre
- 6:28pm
- Bugscope Team wow
- Bugscope Team hello you guys
- Student hi
- Student hi
- Bugscope Team see if we crash from 27 connections at once
- Bugscope Team welcome!
- Bugscope Team bring it on
- Bugscope Team welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Team oooh cate
- Bugscope Team can you all see the image on the screen?
- Bugscope Team more fun for chas if it does crash tho
- Bugscope Team and the chat, I guess?
- Student hey fuzzylove

- Bugscope Team there you go

- Student are those eyes or cheeks
- Bugscope Team Lisa should be drivin', and we can convey control to whoever would like it, one at a time, with Lisa's permission.
- Bugscope Team eyes
- Bugscope Team big eyes

- Bugscope Team compound eyes

- Bugscope Team the background is doublestick carbon

- Bugscope Team carbon...
- Student what is ommatidia
- 6:33pm

- Bugscope Team the individual facets of the compound eye are called ommatidia
- Student thanks!

- Bugscope Team this is the tip of the mosquito proboscis

- Student what is a proboscis
Bugscope Team the proboscis is the long tube-shaped mouthpart
- Student what is the proboscis?
- Student are those little hairs
- Student ?
- Bugscope Team the lancet is inside

- Bugscope Team proboscis is sort of like a portable mouth, or like a straw.

- Bugscope Team tiny hairs called setae, and tiny scales

- Student what color is the mosquito lancet
- Student ok, thanks

- Student nice im learning a lot
- Bugscope Team yeah that is what they bite with, inside of that tube.

- Bugscope Team the proboscis itself does not go into your skin

- Student so what does go into your skin?

- Student is the texture hard or soft?
- Student what are the scales for? protection?

- Student what is the part that goes into the skin?
- Bugscope Team "bite" -- they actually just pierce the skin with a needle much like getting your blood drawn
- Student this is great

- Bugscope Team there's a sharp pointy thing you often do not see unless you smashes the skeeter at the right time
- Bugscope Team focus!
- Student do they have small teeth
- Bugscope Team the sharp thing is serrated on the end like a steak knife
- Bugscope Team no teeth
- Student what do they eat?
- Bugscope Team they feed only on blood
- Student they eat people!

- Student ?
- Bugscope Team they suck blood -- the females need to have a blood meal in order to lay their eggs succcessfully
- Student those look like they would hurt

- Bugscope Team this is the edge of a wing on another insect.
- 6:38pm
- Student it looks like when I haven't shaved for a while
- Student are these sharp?
Bugscope Team the scale bar (at lower left) showed they were about 8 um wide, and came down to a point probably less than a micron, so yes they are very sharp, but they're also so small they probably couldn't pierce your skin, they'd break instead
- Bugscope Team and those are prob'ly mechanosensory spines
- Bugscope Team the insect can sense when they move

- Bugscope Team this is cool

- Student what insect was the setae from

- Student mechanosensory spines
- Bugscope Team this is the pulvillus, part of the tarsus, which is the forearm

- Student it looks sort of like a flower

- Bugscope Team these, what we just saw (see now) are called tenent setae
- Student where are the unidentified flying insects found?
- Bugscope Team they do look like flowers, sometimes like calla lilies
- Student this looks like a sea urchin or anemone

- Bugscope Team those were collected locally, not sure

- Bugscope Team you can see the micron bar on the left
- Bugscope Team If we use the focus tool we should be able to clear up the image and see them better
- Bugscope Team a bacterium is often 2 microns (micrometers) in length
Bugscope Team and looking at the scale bar, the heads of these little setae were about 1um, so half the length of a bacterium

- Bugscope Team could be hard to focus on these because the electron beam sort of blows them around
- Bugscope Team you can see the little setae moving ever so slightly from image to image. that's because the electron's we're using to image are building up and the electrostatic force is causing them to repel each other
- Bugscope Team ooh better
- Bugscope Team ooh not so good
- Student are the unidentified flying insects found everywhere?
Bugscope Team well it's just unidentified by us. certainly someone knows what it is, we just didn't have a chance to get an entomologist to ID it for us today

- Bugscope Team the bulbs are the sticky parts that in concert allow the insect to stick to walls, or glass, or the ceiling
- 6:44pm
- Bugscope Team you can see there are boatloads of them
- Bugscope Team in between those claws, we see on either end
- Bugscope Team this is a really cool image with the two curved claws arching over the pulvillus pad
- Student what are the horn-like parts?
Bugscope Team those were the two claws on the foot

- Bugscope Team those were the claws, Nicole.
- Student i think its a hairy back nicole
- Student oh
- Bugscope Team it's a hairy belly
- Student it has a cactus body
- Bugscope Team this is the waist of an ant

- Bugscope Team Many insects have exoskeletons, meaning instead of soft skin they have a chitinous shell that serves as their support, the way our bones do
- Bugscope Team the spines allow it to sense when it is folded against itself

- Bugscope Team some of the setae are chemosensory -- the insect can smell with them

- Bugscope Team This is a bunch of fungus growing near the mothparts of an ant
- Bugscope Team some of the hairs form patterns that permit recognition of species

- Student yum
- Bugscope Team here we see fungus, and a spore head

- Student why would fungus be growing by the mouth

- Bugscope Team yeah Rae
- Bugscope Team the fibers have an interesting twisted pattern, almost akin to DNA
- Student they eat too much junk food
- Student if we were bitten by a black ant what would happen?

- Bugscope Team sometimes they bite because you just look good too

- 6:49pm
- Student what is that
- Bugscope Team if it had big pincers like a soldier ant you would feel it

- Student gross

- Bugscope Team this produces x-rays, but it is a super powered microscope, yeah

- Student thats great
- Student xrays

- Student I was down south one summer and I swear this giant bug was chasing me!
- Bugscope Team the samples are in a vacuum chamber and we are beaming electrons at them

- Student how does insect repellent "repel" bugs?
Bugscope Team I just looked up one popular repellant, DEET, which apparently blocks their receptors that sense carbon-dioxide and lactic acid, essentially blinding them to your presence

- Student I wondered how it kept following me.

- Student this is sooo sci-fi!
- Student yes
- Student very sci-fi

- Bugscope Team Rae the flying insects can often see very well, and they can smell you, or your hair, or whatever -- perfume, deodorant...

- Bugscope Team yeah bugs are a lot weirder when you see them so close

- Bugscope Team this is a cool image with brochosomes on it

- Student they're a lot cooler too
- Student what are those warty things?
- Student that looked like a little leaf

- Student whats a brochosome?

- Student this is a great tool for introducing a science unit to all grades - talk about getting the students involved!

- Bugscope Team brochosomes are tiny soccerball-like waxy beads that are produced by leafhoppers
- Bugscope Team oh cool you found a brochosome
- Student bye
- Student we're gonna log off
- Student PEACE OUT!
- Student see ya later
- Student thanks guys
- Student thanks!
- Student we're logging off! thanks!!!!
- Student we are leaving now, toodles
- Student bye bye
- Student thankyou and goodbye :)
- Student thanks
- Student thank you!
- Student bye thank you!!!!
- Bugscope Team what? okay...
- Student hasta la vista!
- Student thank you
- Bugscope Team oh well we hope you had fun
- Student thanks for the info bye!
- Bugscope Team Thank you. Gracias.
- Student thanks
- Student they are making us leave :(
- Teacher We are leaving now! Thanks so much for another great session. :)
- Student can't wait to visit again!!
- Bugscope Team Is that it Lisa?
- Teacher Yes, thanks!
- Student why when you use bug repellent do some still bite you
Bugscope Team the repellant is targetting one type of sensory organ, so if another insect has a different method or a mutation, they may be resistant to it
- 6:54pm
- Student what did i do?
- Bugscope Team they are using their eyes, like Asian ladybugs.
- Bugscope Team lisa, is that it for today, or is there another session?
- Bugscope Team We have a Kendra here too.
- Teacher No more sessions. We are done with this for the night. Thanks again!
- Bugscope Team So nothing bad as far as we know.
- Student kendra and scott sitting in a tree...
- Bugscope Team yeah
- Bugscope Team a tree
- Bugscope Team Cya Lisa!
- Bugscope Team I hope it's a big tree
- Bugscope Team Thanks You All!
- 7:27pm
- Bugscope Team ?
- Bugscope Team Over already?
- Bugscope Team durn
