- Bugscope Team hello!
- Bugscope Team Hello Marquette!
- Bugscope Team michele? is that you?
- Bugscope Team if you are going to use IE7, you need to make sure you are admin on your PC
- Teacher Yes - we will be starting class momentarily - I have to get the troups rallied?
- Bugscope Team can you use firefox instead?
- Teacher no Firefox here...Will it still work in IE?
- Bugscope Team are you admin on the machine? do you know how to check?
- Bugscope Team The reason we ask is that to view the video feed used during control of the microscope you'd have to be able to install the ActiveX plugin
- Teacher I am not the admin - not sure how to check. NO IT people around now
- Bugscope Team right click on "my computer", select manage, then click on "device manager", it will warn you if you are not admin.
- Bugscope Team The other options is to download a "portable" firefox distribution which doesn't require you to be admin to install locally for your account
- Teacher Can I use IE? No go ON firefox.
- Bugscope Team just a second michele, we are trying to find the link for you.
- 4:36pm
- Bugscope Team http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
- Bugscope Team michele, if you can visit the link below, download that firefox app to your machine.
- Bugscope Team then, just run it by clicking on it. it is a portable firefox app, which will work much better than IE7.
- Bugscope Team with IE7, and non-admin, you will not be able to drive the scope.
- Bugscope Team A workaround for this has to be found.
- Bugscope Team (Hello, Michele. This is Daniel.)
- Bugscope Team they're back. any luck?
- Teacher Downloading theportable FF now...few minutes
- Bugscope Team awesome.
- Guest Geez
- Guest I couldn't log in!
- Bugscope Team Yay, I just sent you an email.
- Guest Any time I tried to log in with a password it crashed
Bugscope Team call us at 265-8164

- Bugscope Team Michele -- thanks for starting the FF download. We should've warned you ahead of time but forgot
- Guest now I am pink
- Guest I was
- Bugscope Team It will run 100x smoother once you can use Firefox
- Bugscope Team Only 100x?
- Bugscope Team :)
- 4:41pm
- Teacher 79% loaded
- Bugscope Team Great. Are you going to have the other teachers login too?
- Bugscope Team IE7 will work fine as long as they're not controlling the scope. They can chat, follow images, etc with IE7 just fine
Bugscope Team You'll have to explain that one to me... How is one able to get live video but the one controlling not?
- Teacher no - I am the only logger here - my students will get online soon too!
- Bugscope Team great!
- Bugscope Team This is the first time you've used this interface, right?
- Bugscope Team I am now an admin
- Bugscope Team awesome
- Bugscope Team Ooh, a promotion.
- Bugscope Team hi annie
- Bugscope Team moving up
- Bugscope Team hiya!
- Bugscope Team You earned it for sure.
- Bugscope Team haha, some would argue with that statement
- Bugscope Team ;)
- Teacher I downloaded Ff and now cannot find it on the PC. Suggestions?
- Bugscope Team Annie: get your homework done yet? huh huh huh?
- Bugscope Team nopes
- Bugscope Team reload your desktop
- Bugscope Team me?
- Teacher How?
- Bugscope Team michele
- Bugscope Team not me
- Bugscope Team I haven't finished the SAS yet
- Bugscope Team I may be taking the 50 Green home or walking...fun times
- Teacher Still no FF. Can we run any of this today on IE or do I need to reschedule for same time next wednesday? That is an option.
- 4:46pm
- Bugscope Team Michele -- when the file download window came up did you click "Run" or "Save" ?
- Bugscope Team it would go into either "my documents" or "desktop" i would think.
- Teacher RUN
- Bugscope Team try saving it
- Bugscope Team did you look to make sure the installer window isn't open?
- Teacher trying again - sorry - I am a computer moron.
- Bugscope Team nope, I think I found it
- Bugscope Team look in
- Bugscope Team hmm, it's pretty well hidden. can you try downloading once more, but hit "Save" and save it to hte desktop instead. then double-click it there?
- Bugscope Team I'm trying that right now on my PC so I can guide you through it
- Bugscope Team when you save, it will ask you where you want to save it, save it to the desktop.
- Bugscope Team cool.
- Teacher OK - I am on FF now - ready??
- Bugscope Team michele (FF) now has control, try clicking on a preset
- Bugscope Team We should be ready to go
- Bugscope Team all right! time to begin
- Teacher OK - give me 5 minutes to try this and explain it to my class ..they can't wait :)
- Bugscope Team Sure thing. I'll start typing out some quick instructions about the new interface while you're gone
- 4:51pm
- Bugscope Team This interface has a new live video feed during the time that you're driving, changing focus, or adjusting contrast/brightness
- Bugscope Team That means you should get almost instant feedback
- Bugscope Team One totally new feature is the "Click to Drive" button. Once you click that you start getting video. Now if you click on the image in the middle it'll start to move
- Bugscope Team the direction you move is along a line from the center of image out to where you click
- Bugscope Team so if you click on the right edge you will begin driving to right
- Bugscope Team you need to click again to stop otherwise it will just keep going. Once you get close to what you want to see, you can hit "done" and choose "Click to Center" which works just the same as the previous interface (centering what you click on)
- Bugscope Team Presets work similar to before. Focus and contrast/brightness should be similar except with almost instant feedback.
- Bugscope Team We're ready whenever you are!
- 4:57pm

- Bugscope Team Looks like you just did a preset

- Bugscope Team Looks like you're doing great so far. Any questions?
- Teacher just playing - will have specific questions soon!
- Bugscope Team cool

- 5:03pm

- Bugscope Team We need Scott online to liven things up.
- Teacher hi! this is jenny and shaina
- Bugscope Team hi jenny and shaina
- Bugscope Team Hi girls
- Bugscope Team girls I suppose :)
- Teacher so, is this image taken from an angle below the junebug?
- Bugscope Team Almost all of our bugs are mounted laying on their backs
- Bugscope Team so this is hte underside, centered near the head
- Teacher why is that?
- Bugscope Team because the underside is almost always more interesting to look at
- Bugscope Team its more interesting to look at than the back of a bug, which is usually pretty plain
- Bugscope Team What you see near the top, center are some of the mouthparts, they almost look like parenthesis
- Bugscope Team many scarabs (beetles like junebugs) have shovel-like heads
- Teacher on either side of the mouth there are 2 lighter colored appendages, -- what are those?
- Teacher coming from the sides of the mouth

- Bugscope Team there are some palps
- Bugscope Team Part of it has to do with the anatomical features and the fact that we cannot see color when using an SEM. As you know, many insects look really colorful, with bright patterns on their skin. We can't see those (typically) here, but we can see some really neat features that are typically hidden from view when looking from the top.
- Bugscope Team Yes, listen to Annie. She's an entomology student here at University of Illinois and she knows her stuff
- Bugscope Team Palps. Dang. Annie beat me.
- Bugscope Team Those were the antennae I believe, they were coming out and down, right?
- Bugscope Team those are mouth "appendanges"--they have little contact chemoreceptors on them that allow the beetle to "taste"
- Teacher what are palps?
- 5:08pm
- Bugscope Team the palps are the smaller "feelers" coming off of the maxilla---in the center of your screen right now
- Bugscope Team Insects have mandibular and maxillary palps
- Bugscope Team they help it maneuver food as well as taste it using "chemoreceptors" on the tips
- Bugscope Team they allow the insec to "taste" its food, the place that it is sitting...some insects even "taste" potential mates

- Bugscope Team fly eye
- Bugscope Team ?
- Bugscope Team yes
- Teacher do you have any suggestions of which of our images are the coolest?
- Bugscope Team This one is pretty need, especially as you zoom out
- Bugscope Team neat, rather
- Bugscope Team what we call fruit flies are actually more precisely called vinegar flies

- Bugscope Team fruit flies are agricultural pests

- Bugscope Team Apple maggots and such
- Bugscope Team Annie, can you explain what the "setae" in between these eye facets are for?
- Teacher do they see out of each individual section/"pocket"
- Teacher ?
- Bugscope Team What I was told is that they allow the insect to sense direction in the wind
- Bugscope Team The round bumps are the individual ommatidia, components of the compound eye
- Teacher and, what are the "pointy things"?
- Bugscope Team bees and flies both have eye hairs...beetles have no eye setae
- Bugscope Team I was also told that if you shave off the eye hairs (don't ask me how),bees are unable to navigate in the wind
- Bugscope Team They "see" with each of the ommatidia but the have to reconstruct all the individual data into one thing that makes sense
- Bugscope Team Looks like some of these have been shaved off.
- Teacher so this guy wouldnt be able to navigate in the wnid very easily correct?
- Bugscope Team yeah, they don't exactly get spa treatment when they're rolling around in our collection boxes
- 5:13pm
- Bugscope Team with a tiny little razor
- Teacher well maybe they should haha
- Teacher what happened to the butterfly and moth missss korbbbbb sent
- Bugscope Team right..the problem is that not all flies are necessarily strong fliers...
- Teacher :)
- Bugscope Team there are no easy answers
- Bugscope Team Seeing with multiple eyes isn't so odd, if you think about it. We see with two (typically) and don't think anything of it because our brain sorts it out. We don't know for certain what insects see, or how they interpret what is coming it, but it is certainly sufficient to find food and a mate, when combined with their other senses.
- Bugscope Team it's likely that these setae became more brittle after it died and dried out. when it was alive it probably had fewer of them knocked off
- Bugscope Team they got kind of squished along the way
Bugscope Team sorry this was in answer to the butterfly and moth bugs
- Bugscope Team ahh, they are dead...dead things fall apart
- Bugscope Team very philosophical
- Teacher by whom!
Bugscope Team by the mail man i guess
- Bugscope Team did they make it onto the stub at all, or too pulverized?
- Bugscope Team I reeived the envelope yesterday morning and took it down to Scott. He handed it off before I could see how they survived. I think they might have been a bit mooshed, though. The USPS didn't seem to take very good care of the envelope...

- Bugscope Team (oops: received, not reeived)
- Bugscope Team Here are some mandibles and a bunch of palps
- Bugscope Team And no, I'm not the mailman, even though I took the mail downstairs... :-)
- Teacher our preset say "with wings" where would we see that in this picture?
- Bugscope Team it was David Hasselhoff's fault!!
- Bugscope Team You'll want to zoom out and drive downwards
- Bugscope Team this is up top at the head

- Bugscope Team this is an ant or wasp?
Bugscope Team it looked like an ant with wings when i put the sample on the stub
Bugscope Team we are not sure, do you know?

- Bugscope Team you might just use click to center to go down a field of view or two

- Bugscope Team same order

- Bugscope Team er, could.

- Bugscope Team but I'm not very knowledgeable about bugs so...yeah
- Bugscope Team these are the tarsal (?) segments of hte leg. you might want to adjust focus
- 5:18pm
- Teacher what is the hair on the legs for?

- Bugscope Team Insects are much hairier than we anticipate
- Bugscope Team they use the hairs to sense their environments
- Bugscope Team focus is looking better!
- Bugscope Team Annie, do the hairs have any role in hygiene?
- Teacher do they have multiple joints in their legs?
- Bugscope Team Yep. Annie could name them all for you. Of interest is the fact that you can see the ball & socket design
- Bugscope Team I imagine some do, you see flies and cockroaches grooming themselves with their legs a lot
- Bugscope Team They do, they aren't really joints like we have
- Bugscope Team Because they have exo-skeletons, their "bones" are all on the outside, so their joints are exposed whereas ours are of course covered up by skin and not visible
- Teacher how do you prepare the specimens?
- Bugscope Team Muscles have attachment point on each segment
- Bugscope Team We actually have a video you can watch to see it first-hand, but not a lot. The dead bugs get mounted on sticky carbon tape and then coated with a super-fine layer of metal
- Bugscope Team poitns

- Bugscope Team points, GEEZ

- 5:24pm
- Bugscope Team The actual bug here is to the lower-left
- Bugscope Team It's a very long one! This is the tail-end
- Bugscope Team although it extends down quite a ways still
- Bugscope Team Michele, how are you liking the new interface? Are you have any problems adapting? Anything, as an experienced bugscope user, you'd suggest or notice? (You don't have to answer now, but keep it in mind while you're exploring.)

- Bugscope Team Looks like you guys are navigating really well! Time for some focus adjustment
- Teacher It seems to be fine to me once we got moving. It is hard to read the Chat though.

- Bugscope Team because of colors, size?
- Bugscope Team In what way?
- Bugscope Team or too busy with controlling?
- Bugscope Team (Space? Color? Size? Location? Order?)
- Teacher Small and contrast difficult. Can't see enough of the Chat box at once to read the dialogue.
- Bugscope Team ah, you're probably on a smaller screen size, like 1024x768 (do you know?)
- Teacher I have no idea....but that could be the problem!
- 5:29pm
- Bugscope Team this might free up some space: hit F11 to go to full-screen
- Teacher OK - We are going to sign off soon - send me a link to any comments you want me to make about Bugscope. Thanks for your time and energy - we have to move onward with the rest of class! Michele
- Bugscope Team if you have a bunch of menus it'll free up tons more space
- Bugscope Team Thanks for logging in Michele!
- Bugscope Team Let us know when you've moved on so we can shut things down here
- Bugscope Team ok thank you for trying out our new interface
- Bugscope Team thank you for the good questions!!
- Bugscope Team Thanks again, Michele!

- Teacher Thanks you!! See you later in the future!
- Teacher It was not too bad! thanks again!
- Bugscope Team bye!!
- Bugscope Team see you again!
- Bugscope Team Ok, teardown time
- Bugscope Team Thanks Annie for loggin' in
- Bugscope Team thank you Annie for your knowledge of bugs ^^
- Bugscope Team No. It's HAMMER-TIME!
- Bugscope Team haha
- Bugscope Team no problem
- Bugscope Team ....can't touch dis...
- Bugscope Team I always enjoy the bugscope
- Bugscope Team oh daniel....
- Bugscope Team yikes
- Bugscope Team Yes?
- Bugscope Team :P
- Bugscope Team What?
- Bugscope Team What was that for?
- Bugscope Team i was giving you a look over the computer
- Bugscope Team not very effective
- Bugscope Team do you want to go over the homework??
- 5:35pm
- Bugscope Team ?
- Bugscope Team stop.... collaborate and listen
- Bugscope Team Sure. I just got done formatting problem #1. I've got a solution for #2 and some SAS crud for the others but am not sure if I know how to interpret it. I guess I was too worn out to follow the discussion section.
- Bugscope Team ...HAMMER-TIME!...
- Bugscope Team somethin' somethin', don't remember hte rest of the words
- Bugscope Team I am not finished either
- Bugscope Team Ok, I'm out. Cya stats geeks
- Bugscope Team the SAS is done, but I am not finished writing interpreting
- Bugscope Team :P
- Bugscope Team I have a friend, Rachel, who knows all the words to "I like big butts". Scary.
- Bugscope Team interpretation that is
- Bugscope Team I know all the words to both of those songs and Ice Ice Baby
- Bugscope Team Hi, Chas. I see a hand.
- Bugscope Team Prove it.
- Bugscope Team Anyway, ok...do you want me to call you later...like at 9 or so
- Bugscope Team Oh, I will
- Bugscope Team I hope to be finished by then
- Bugscope Team All right stop collaborate and listen Ice is back with a brand new edition, something grabs a hold of me tightly
- Bugscope Team more?
- Bugscope Team flow like a harpoon daily and nightly?
- Bugscope Team Did you get negative numbers for problem #1?
- Bugscope Team no
- Bugscope Team I think I ignored the negative sign
- Bugscope Team I got 197-212 or something like that
- Bugscope Team No. Hmm. Which did you have as the n1 and which as n2? I used the 26C ones as n1. Yeah, I get between 185 and 238 more than the control.
- 5:41pm
- Bugscope Team Or perhaps I should say the difference is in that range.
- Bugscope Team i dont have the answer right now
- Bugscope Team hmm I i mean, it is at home
- Bugscope Team on my computer
- Bugscope Team Yeah, you tricked me intro revealing the answer so you didn't have to do the problem yourself! BLARGH!
- Bugscope Team no, i did it . it is just on my other computer
- Bugscope Team :P
- Bugscope Team riiiight.
- Bugscope Team whatever
- Bugscope Team I did it
- Bugscope Team Give me a call later. 398-2303. I should be home by 8pm, and hopefully will have solid answers for the other ones.
- Bugscope Team Ok?
- Bugscope Team ok sounds good
- Bugscope Team i will call you
- Bugscope Team me too
- Bugscope Team bye for now
- Bugscope Team bye bye bye
