The Project

Project Title The Virtual Electron Microscope in the Classroom
Insects To Study I am going to let the students (at both levels) make the selections Some I will suggest are Assassin bugs, beetle head, mollusk shell, bird feather, perhaps a fragment of a vole skull.
Project Description I have up to 16 teachers per semester in my course (currently 3, but will invite available General Biology teachers at the College and one or more high school AP classes to participate), and introduce them to as many different forms of active learning programs as possible. This project will initiate an outreach program into local schools and present both teachers and high school students with their first experiences with making electron microscope images, observing first-hand how the images are selected and taken, and help them correlate the images they see in electron micrographs with the actual objects in the laboratory. The College of Staten Island and public schools of New York City service students of all ethnicities. The images taken will be shared between classes in the College, junior, and high schools on Staten Island. My course is open to teachers on sabbatical leave, and has included teachers from schools servicing all regions of New York City.

Miscellaneous

Where did you hear about Bugscope? A serendipitous websearch hit as I looked for images on pollen. The Lucas School project opened up and showed me your site.
