The Project

Project Title
Insects To Study
Project Description I have participated in a Clemson sponsored 3-day workshop titled "Using Live Insects in the Classroom"(from the University of Arizona Center for Insect Science). The curricula is very extensive for grades 1-3 with an emphasis on Health issues. I have used many aspects of the curriculum with grades 4-6 as well. This would certainly enhance the learning! Since we are very rural and have a low SES(very high free and reduced breakfast and lunch percent), we are eager to try and bring as much into the classroom via technology. Due to a combined effort of new state Standards and teacher effectiveness, our school's test scores last year rose more than most for the state. We would like to continue this upward momentum. We will be combining our two elementary schools for the 99-2000 schools year and will have a great computer lab! We currently have at least one Gateway in each classroom and several in the Library. We also have assistance from our local Math and Science HUB. This is part of a grant from NSF for a Statewide Systemic Initiative. There are 13 regional HUBs for help with math and science. This year our teachers are participating in the STEMS(Sharing Teacher Experiences in Math and Science)program. This is where teachers are paired to design modules or lessons that incorporate the new Standards. These lessons are then taught to the faculty during staff development days. I would like to assist the teachers here at Jenkins Hill with Bugscope '99. This would be exciting to see both the teachers and students participate in a program that is science and technology strong! From my position, I would be teaching teachers and students. Maybe this way I can reach more students in future years by stimulating other teachers to not be afraid of science and technology. Thank you for your time and effort, Patricia A. Nicholas
